I used to unwillingly spend 2-3 hours in the shower everyday, this damaged my body and senses so bad! I could never believe that someone would genuinely want to do this. I couldn’t even fathom spending $1K for ANYTHING. Much less having such an excessive amount of any skincare and makeup or whatever else. When it comes to makeup and its accessories, I buy absolutely nothing, except for the occasional chapstick. Skincare, I buy a bottle of shampoo and bodywash. Plus, an extra one as a backup once the first one runs out, depending on the price and size. I also have a bottle of body lotion. It has lasted me for months now, and when that runs out, I will naturally buy a new one. But not until then. And that’s it, that’s all I have and need to have. Nothing more. Hayleo Hayley had this same clip in one of her overconsumption videos, and she also brings up how makeup and the like is known to expire in just a few months time. She was just as flabbergasted and upfront honest as you are. And side note, I shower for 10-20mins tops. No way anyone is taking 3hr showers or baths. Rage bait or not, every bit of this is beyond ridiculous and insane. People seriously need a reality check and a slice of humble pie

I will admit, when I was a kid I dreamed of stuff like this. I grew out of it as I started realizing the expense, how long it actually takes to get through a bottle of body wash, how harsh fragrance can be on the skin, etc.

I'm consuming your videos at a rate this tiktok creator consumes body scrub. 😂😂 This reminds me of the days when Temptalia was big. Christine was also sort of alerting people whenever new stuff was released because she got it in PR. But at least whenever she posted, you already got a first impression or in depth rating of the product along with it. I'm not on tiktok and I've simplified my routines to a point where I don't feel the need to consume such content in search of recommendations anymore, but I do have to admit that I sometimes gloat at the excess when it pops up here on YT.

I appreciate your content and I like that you’re bringing attention to the situation. I wonder if you’ve also considered having a professional or somebody who has certifications to talk about how this type of overconsumption is causing other people to feel so inadequate and anxious because they can’t get up and do this. People just don’t wanna take a shower at all if it can not be a $1000 shower. It can lead to cripiling anxiety and depression.

i appreciate your distinction between collecting and overconsuming. i have a lot of internalized guilt and shame about wanting things, even though i am able to buy them myself. i think your model of things staying available/useful in 20 years will help me a lot!! my current “collection” is gel nail polishes and such. i love to do my nails and im pretty good at it so i shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting more things i will use and be able to use for a long time. thank you :)

I have gone through overconsumption phases, but it’s child play compared to that. This year, however, I’ve been on my no buy era and I think that I’m better off. It’s stressful to buy so much cause I grew up in a don’t waste anything home. So when I would realize that I couldn’t go through it all I’d get super anxious. At that point I’d give the items to my sisters who didn’t/couldn’t buy those little luxuries. I’m still going through something’s to this day, but I’m almost done and not in any hurry to over consume again.

I was thinking there's no way you can go through that much, not in a year, maybe not even in five years, especially since you're not supposed to use shower scrubs every day, since they're obviously exfoliating, and you're only supposed to exfoliate twice a week max

Shawna, I recently discovered your channel. Thank you so much for sharing with us! I am in my late 50’s and I wish this content was available when I was a young adult. In the 80’s, the motto was more, more, more! I would get so overwhelmed with stuff. I was diagnosed with adhd a few years ago, and I am now on meds for it. It makes so much sense now as to why I felt so overwhelmed with stuff, life decisions, etc. Again, thanks for sharing! Also, would you consider doing a video about content creators and Amazon Prime Days/Nordstrom Yearly Sale/Wayfair Days, etc. Basically, the big sale days of retailers.

Ive read people explain before that this content can often appeal to those who grew up with extreme poverty. Where you never had variety or excess. Growing up only having generic "all-in-one" body/hair wash from the salvation army as your ONLY option can make seeing dozens of soaps and scents appealing. However I can see the opposite being true too (this is just me assuming) that coming from poverty seeing such excess and waste infuriating and offensive Disclaimer: I am only reiterating what I've read about overconstmption, I am fortunate to not have experienced that level of poverty so I am not speaking from experience.

I’m all for making your shower more inviting and aesthetic especially if you have a harder time motivating yourself to shower, for me it’s neurodivergence- but 100% the over-consumption and unethical advertising isn’t good. And to the point of another comment I saw, you shouldn’t be exfoliating every day every shower it should be something you don’t go through that fast. I like seasonal scents of body care products but when the season’s over I save the rest for next year (as long as it keeps) and you don’t need every scent

Now my mom is a BIG COUPON lover and she’s all over discount tiktok etc and she’s saved us a crap ton of money at times. When we’ve had small stocks of shampoo, toothpaste etc it was because we got opportunities to buy what we normally use while the offers were there and we wouldn’t have to worry about those things for awhile. So I can understand the comfort that can come from having certain things stocked up especially if they tend to be more pricey and you find them as part a great sale. I come from what was a 6 sometimes 7 person household so we went through certain things QUICK and often had to buy things to last for months at a time. But THIS is having things for the sake of having them. In no conceivable world would my mom, 2 sisters and nieces be able to use up the amount of products she has in her bathroom unless we showered every day twice a day. This goes beyond being able to provide for family and is just straight up hoarding for the aesthetics.

...and I'm over here trying to figure out how to declutter my shower that I share with my husband and 2 small kiddos (okay, just to clarify and not be creepy, we share at different times). When I'm trying to relax in my shower routine, all the bottles, free floating toys, and random items make me feel stressed...like the stuff is subconsciously telling me to stop screwing around and clean the place. This influencer's shower set up would be so bad for my mental health.
@katrinathomas52366 ай бұрын
I'll admit that, being sensory seeking, having a huge variety of colorful, scented lotions and scrubs that feel nice is a tempting thought. However, at this creator's level, I think all the benefits would be outweighed by guilt- over the money I spent, the level of plastic waste, the disorganized mess that the containers would devolve into, etc.
@HereticHousewife6 ай бұрын
I agree. When my husband and I moved from an apartment into a house that had a huge bathroom, complete with a soaking tub and walk-in shower, I bought a lot of bath products because I had an opportunity to experiment with and enjoy them. But the novelty wore off over time, and by the time we moved to a different house, I was completely over it. Now, I'm good with a little shower rack with a handful of products to choose from instead of an entire shelf of a linen cabinet devoted to bath/shower items. It was just too much and stopped being enjoyable.

During lockdown I would watch these videos and I got really into body care products, perfumes, bath and body works, etc. I don’t think I viewed this content as aspirational but it definitely contributed to my overconsumption of these products. Fortunately I wasn’t old enough to get a job or have disposable income so I wasn’t able to buy too much, but I’m still trying to get through the stuff I bought during that time that I don’t use regularly. I feel like this kind of overconsumption was most common among middle/high school girls while I was in school because I would see my peers with unreasonable bath and body works collections, and this was consistent across different levels of wealth. The overconsumption of bath and body works (or similar things like eos, baby lips,) collections was really normalized for me growing up even outside of social media and I’d love to hear your take on bath and body works overconsumption specifically!

i think this content often occupies the space between hoarding and organisation - two things people often gravitate to in a state of anxiety. obviously the content is exaggerated, but it still reflects real behaviours and consumption. these behaviours are likely exacerbated by advertising (propaganda). probably also somewhat born from quarantine stocking behaviours. it’s like the love child of doomsday preppers and the lipstick effect

I confused as to how she would feel a need to "restock" certain scrubs so often. I don't see how she can use any of them up before they go bad...maybe she just has a few favorites that she uses while letting the rest of it go bad? No matter how you slice it, it makes no sense. And I do think that's her entire point, to shock people into engaging with her content so it gets promoted further.

Sam’s Club does sell some of their bulk detergent pods in a big box full of a bunch of small bags. We had taken a break from Sam’s Club for a couple of years and when we came back, I was surprised that they had started doing this. Costco actually changed their packaging for their store brand detergent pods from a heavy duty plastic container/jar to just a plastic bag. It advertises that it’s “less waste.”

Not all chemicals are the same💯 people react differently to certain chemicals. My facial skin looks the best when all I use is water and toner and every once in a while a very very gentle exfoliator. natural oils are important and these “influencers” never talk about the importance of learning how to work with the oils your body produces. Hi there, let me start by saying that I do enjoy your videos. Before the tictock craze of as they call it a " shower routine "I'm 60 and I come from the era where we girls it's 5 of us girls, our mom taught us to use 2 wash cloths 1 for the body, 1for your lady parts. We were taught to use then ivory soap for your lady parts with your white wash cloth and you use Dove soap everywhere else. And we were taught to moisturize our bodies. But now that I'm my own person I still use 2 wash cloths, the only difference is that I do use a PH. Lady parts wash,and a bar soap followed by a bodywash with a fragrance and a African net to remove the dead skin from my body. And yes I do use a body scrub 2 times a week. However I do have ( 40 +) bottles of bodywash ( 20 +) scrubs, (40+) secnted lotions as well as (80) bottles of perfume. I buy what I need to care for my self, however I do use all of my products in conjunction with my perfume on a daily basis. I'm not the kind of person that wants to smell the same way every day. I don't waste my money on over the top expensive 300.00 + perfume however I do have a reasonably priced perfume. Along with sale price only during SAS only.
