It's better for the process to be so decentralized. You wouldn't want a civilian leader preoccupied with of loads of other things to micromanage the military.

the military screws stuff up well enough on its own. the civilians get blamed in the next election anyway. just as they do for high interest rates. leaving Afghanistan is a great example.

@@gregknipe8772 Leaving Afghanistan was a civilian leadership decision. At the high strategic level, the civilians make the call, but at the tactical level they do not and should not.

Great interview. Tiegs builds a solid military case for how these military assessments are made. It's what the military is trained to do. Still, a civilian leader will feel the personal cost of approving the action. Regardless of the leader's choice, the decision will face glaring public scrutiny. Loud and adamant opposition will flood the airwaves with reasons to be angry at the leader, no matter how false, senseless, or irrational. I'm glad I'm not a leader. My soul would hurt to make such decisions.

Civillian leadership is never concerned with the " personal cost " of anything , only the political cost or political capital lost or gained. Aka they are only concerned with their political advancement / career path nothing else.

The man that created Delta Force... Charlie Beckwith...he laid out in his book the concept of Delta. Beckwith created a Special Forces unit that has no layers of management or bureaucracy between Delta and the President of the USA. Beckwith claimed he did this on purpose...a "clean and direct chain of command." Beckwith wrote that type of chain of command was needed to respond fast to international terrorist incidents overseas. The usual military chain of command has a lot of layers of management between the unit and the President. When communications go through many layers of management, communications often becomes distorted and unclear. Beckwith also claimed the money supply for Delta was designed the same way...$$$ comes directly out of Department of the Army direct to Delta. That is unique, say compared to the Marines or the 82nd Airborne or even the Green Berets. Beckwith was obsessed with "straight lines" whether it be the chain of command, money to fund his outfit. When Beckwith created Delta, that type of chain of command was highly controversial as many in DC feared a unit organized like that could potentially be dangerous to a democracy. It was immediate post Vietnam when Beckwith got the green light to create Delta along the lines he wanted. Jimmy Carter himself...a Democrat...wanted a unit with Delta or SAS capabilities. Today, this sort of chain is seen as normal. So far, Delta Force has not abused its very unique chain of command. At least not publicly.

I feel like there’s a tie-in between the hesitancy mentioned here and the whole Iraq WMD thing. And of course there’s the other side of the equation: If he wasn’t there, what kind of hay could the anti-American factions in Pakistan make out of the incident? They *definitely* do have WMDs there, so there’s the potential to open a really big can of worms.

This guy is full of cr@p, No military unit tells the President or the Pentagon what needs to done. They follow orders. That's how the military works. The military is run by civilians that take all kinds of pieces from different sources from military and civilian and they decide the next action taking consideration geo politics that is way above the military including DELTA. They don't call DELTA or any community to get their political opinions or consequences of any military action politically globally. This is above their paygrade. The military is on the need to know basis. They tell you want you need to know to do a mission that that's it. It's by design by a reason, so the military doesn't make policy but the civilians elected by the people.

Ummmmm ……In 2014, a year after I wrote my essay, a top-secret U.S. strike cell made up of special operations forces was created to go after Islamic State (also known as ISIS) targets in Syria. Over the course of five years, it struck many enemy positions. But a recent New York Times investigation revealed that it also killed an untold number of civilians-deaths that were never officially counted and have only recently been acknowledged by the Defense Department after intense media pressure. Military officials who worked with the task force told the Times that the group would often claim its actions were taken in self-defense to circumvent the rules meant to minimize civilian casualties. The unit was called Talon Anvil, and it worked in three shifts around the clock between 2014 and 2019, pinpointing targets for the United States’ formidable air power to hit: convoys, car bombs, command centers and squads of enemy fighters. But people who worked with the strike cell say in the rush to destroy enemies, it circumvented rules imposed to protect noncombatants, and alarmed its partners in the military and the C.I.A. by killing people who had no role in the conflict: farmers trying to harvest, children in the street, families fleeing fighting, and villagers sheltering in buildings. ……Yeahhhh and he wonder why the President would be pragmatic
