🌱 Join us to rewild the planet: planetwild.com/7/join
The Eurasian Lynx was considered extinct for almost 150 years. Luckily, environmentalists have succeeded in reintroducing back it into the wild.
In our seventh mission, we helped made sure the Lynx population is thriving.
That’s not all! A six-months old baby lynx was trapped and orphaned - not able to survive on its own without her mother. After months of nursing and care, we released her back into the wild.

I came to comment the same thing! I was so happy the team got the cameras that allowed them to recognize some behaviors to indicate how well a lynx is faring in the wild. I don't know if it the camera placement for the out of the box shot was intentional, and it helped to direct her into the forest! She knew there was a person on her left, immediately after release, she when she scoped quickly to the right, saw something occupying the space so that straight ahead was her best shot. Literally, lol. Took her less time to sprint out of sight than I could stand up!

I'm in Canada and lived for some years in an area with Canada lynx. I often saw their tracks in winter but never managed to see a lynx. Too bad there were no trail cams in those days, because I usually saw the tracks in the same place. Best wishes for reintroducing your much larger and very beautiful Eurasian lynx back to their former range!

Sadly many dont see it like myself and glue themself on the Road instead of working and investing properly. Why make more probleme's instead of fixing them? As a German I love the video so much. I wonder what subspecies of lynx are reintroduced to Germany and where did they come from? Also I hope it’s possible to create wildlife corridors that can interconnect the released lynxes so they don’t suffer degradation in the long run. Finally I wish your website would state clearly what it costs to be a member, how to join without having to submit your email first. I have seen other projects which do that upfront like Mossy Earth. I think this would benefit you as well.

One of my favourite movies from Finland is Boy and the Lynx where boy trying to save a lynx from hunters. I live in countryside around farms and big forests, I really hope to see a Lynx once in my lifetime. Lynx is one of cutest wild cats, I like Pumas, Phanters, Lions, Tigers and defienitily Leopards and Lumileopards. Wild cats and ancestors of today's cats are really interesting. Lynxes are cool wild cat beasts and defienitily on Winter they are interesting because thay can walking on the snow without diving under the snow. Great story @planetwild ! I always wonder why there aren't smaller GPS trackers instead of the chunky ones?
@planet-wild
@planet-wild 9 ай бұрын
Well, it's always a trade off. These trackers need to have at least 18 month of battery life while sending their GPS position as often as possible, and at the same time they need to be robust and not too heavy. It basically comes down to the state of battery technology. Powering a tracker for this long isn't currently possible with smaller batteries 😕

My guess is the tuffs are to help with camouflage and might actually act like whiskers too. I did read that it's thought on the American Lynx at least it helps with hearing too, though I'm not 100% sure how tuffs of fur would do that.

My girlfriend said their ears might act like some type of sub-whisker that helps them sense low frequency or low vibration sounds. Maybe a range that their whiskers don't pick up but because they're on their ears, they do.

I think the ear tuffts are for vibrational signalling. Either to enhance audio signals, or, to ensure the Lynx doesnt enter a space where it can get stuck, much like whiskers

What abeautiful, majestic creature! thank you for your work! I think maybe the fur on their ears help them to sense the direction of the wind. ?

They really are! 😍 This sounds like a plausible idea, indeed!

Brushed ears get signal of wind direction eventually combined with the smell sence to make more accurate guesses.

Wonderful and touching project. I really liked the lynx artwork which seemed made for the video specifically?!?! I may be missing something obvious, but I can't find any Wild Planet merch., much less the lynx art featured here... I can only imagine a hoodie with the lynx in a hoodie would do some big numbers and fund more wild projects. Take my money!

The puffs on the ears are probably for sound wave detection and variation in the atmosphere. Sound travels in longitudinal waves.

It’s interesting that this rewinding success story is very similar to the Iberian lynx that were nearly wiped out in Spain and now, several of them are in Portugal as well.

I’d say the brushed ears are for pinpointing the direction of sounds, similar to antennae

Traits like the ear tufts typically evolve in a population for one of three reasons, though most often a combination of them. 1: It is advantageous. 2: The ladies find it attractive. 3: It happened randomly and it wasn't a hindrance, so it stuck around.

Maybe those brushed ears are to percibe the wind

An interesting guess! Why do you think it would need to feel the wind with such a precision?
@ManuelCam
@ManuelCam 9 ай бұрын
@@planet-wild maybe it can help them to predict the weather and know if it's gonna rain, and having a lot of precision on that could help them to know how the weather it's gonna change before they prey notice it, and that could allow the linx to predict the behaviour of their preys

Our linx in South Africa is a bit more pinkish red, has the same colour spots only under the chest and the belly and is a bit more slender. I believe it is our most beautiful cat.

We have the technology to create better tracking devices for released animals.... at least smaller/less bulky collars. Hopefully, the devices will improve soon .
