The rumor began in the winter of 1967 when, after a particularly icy night, reports were flying among Britain’s national press that Paul had been killed in a car crash on January 7, 1967. The tale was reported in the February issue of The Beatles Monthly Book (#43) under the heading of “False Rumour,” and with a denial from the Beatles’ press office. In fact, it claimed that neither Paul nor his black Mini Cooper had even left the house that day.

That is true. I have met 2 people in my life who had met both Pauls. Each time Paul (William Campbell) did not recall or recognize them. It has been reported some dictators have used doubles. They do it in Hollywood. It isn't that difficult on occasions and short term, and the only way they were able to pull it off for a while with the MOST famous band ever, was to reduce them to the studio only. I have a memory that in the Autumn of 1966 one morning, while I was preparing to go to school, the BBC Home Service announced in the news that "reports are coming in that Beatle Paul McCartney has been involved in a serious car accident." As a dedicated Beatle fan (then and now) the impact on me was devastating, even though my first love was George. By the time I arrived at school, anxious that all my fellow classmates would be in tears as well, a friend said it was OK, it had been stated in a later bulletin that it had been a mistaken identity. However although it wasn't seen in the national newspapers (because they could afford to reprint the papers), it stopped the Liverpool papers (who could only run one edition) from publishing that day. It is thought that this is what the lyric "Wednesday morning papers didn't come" (Lady Madonna - March 1968) refers to. I have long thought that "Paul" looks "different." The eye colour is not the same. His stance is different. His whole body shape is bigger, whereas I remember Paul as always being slight. Having said that, I hold no grudges against the stand in, the effect on the world at the time of his alleged death (the height of Beatlemania) would have been catastrophic. That they thought they would get away with it has since been thwarted by two main events: the proliferation of colour televsion (extremely rare and not broadcast daily in the UK until early 1970s) and the internet, where experiences of everyone can be shared on channels such as this.

thanks for that. I just wanted to say something about this. You know how kids can see thru a ruse that adults get fooled by? When the Sgt. Peppers album came out, I was about 5. I loved the Beatles! and when my sisters showed me the new album I wanted to know who the new person was. I wanted Paul back not this guy. No one could convince me it was old Paul. It never "felt" right. We lived in the country with no access to tv and hardly newspaper and never heard about the rumors. Having Ringo's statement about Paul's death removed told me a lot.

My friends and I had had forebodings about the Beatles being punished somehow for John's remark about them being more popular than Jesus. By that afternoon, the story had been retracted as a mistake. I agree that his facial appearance, hair, eye color, singing style and posture changed between 1966 and 67. If you see videos of Paul's bare feet, even they changed extremely from 1966 (small, straight pudgy toes) to 1967 (long toes, boney, bent toward midline of foot).

yeah, paul's dead. it's so nice that the everyone - family, friends, the other beatles - agreed to go along with it and accept this stranger into their lives while still grieving. jolly good of them all to keep completely silent for 50 years, despite the fact that any one of them could sell the story for a small fortune. better, instead, to leave ambiguous clues on the cover of an album (that actually would have sold many more copies if it were released posthumously) and put backwards messages into a song. and thank _god_ they found an exact lookalike of paul, who also had the same voice and mannerisms. it was great of him to abandon all family and friends of his own, and convince them all to keep schtum (along with the doctor/s who declared the original paul dead, and police who attended the scene of the accident). people are so selfless!

Paul just had his jaw set back into the correct place. If you observe his face more closely, you can tell that up til 1966, his jaw was off center and his bite was too far to the left, which explains his uneven face.. I know this is accurate I had the same exact problem with my jaw before I popped it back into place. There was already been two forensics tests done and these can be read just google. The first was done by a professor at University of Miami who is a specialist in audio using electronic signatures. He took a song from pre 66 and one post 67 and proved that electronically they do not even remotely match. Proof number 1. Wired magazine hired a forensic firm who works for law enforcement to put the "hoax" to bed once of for all. When they got back the results they were shocked. Audio signatures shows not 2 but 3 different signatures as they said in early 67 some one was else was also used. They also did physical forensics and found that the facial bone structure do not match, the distance from the top of the nose to the end does not match, the distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin do not match, the teeth do not match, the jaws do not match, how the upper jaw ends up causing teeth to be pushed together, (when not large enough), does not match. The distance between the eyes do not match, ears and earlobes do not match, physical bone structure does not match, weights do not match, heights do not match, hair parts do not match, eye color does not match and shoe sizes also do not match. They said they also discovered that going over photos over the Beatles years that most were doctored and they used parts of Paul face to morph into the new guy so -people would forget how Paul actually looked. They stand by their work and said this would hold up in any court of law. Proof number 2. The Beatles up to 67 used one photographer and he was Italian. In an interview still on youtube he claims. that in early 67 he came home and found that his home had been broken into and it was clear someone was looking for the negatives and images he had taken pre 67 and they left all other images and everything was scattered about. He said two days later he gets a call from someone who said they represented Paul McCartney and they wanted to buy all his negatives and images. He refused and they are still all in safe keeping. He said that what they were trying to do was scrub all images and negatives from pre 66. He said that at he time he thought it was so strange that Paul just did not call him and ask as they were very good friends and he would have just given what he wanted. This is when he said that he knew something was amiss. Proof number 3. Now Tavistock, (change thru social engineering), wanted to use the Beatles to promote their agenda and move away from basically a boy band to something entirely different. Now evidently McCartney did not want to go along with the new agenda of promoting drugs, free sex and completely changing their music, facial looks and clothing styles. After 67 the Beatles changed completely not only music but promoting drug use and eastern mysticism. Again a great example of change thru social engineering. John in his solo work was becoming more and more vocal about the new guy and was actually telling the world. "On How do you sleep at night?" he came right out and said "Those freaks were right when they said you were dead". He was not holding back. What pushed the UK government over the edge? In a video he and George were sitting at a table and he says right out to George, "Where is Billy? Then George makes the comment about the fab 4 and John responds, "You mean fab 3'. Recently in an interview in one of the London newspapers Ringo made the startling claim that he was the only remaining Beatle left. Strange for him to make this comment if not true. In his song "back off boogaloo", this is a straight jab at the new Paul and this is what the remaining 3 Beatles called him. Now the new guy is from Scotland. Where did he and Linda go when Time magazine tracked then down? Scotland. Where did they go and live permanently? Scotland. In the RAM album what does it say when looked in reverse? BILL. What does RAM really stand for? Radical Alteration Modification. Don't you think it odd that a lad from Liverpool would end up in Scotland owning a sheep farm? Right after the forensic report went public by Wired magazine, where did McCartney go? On the David Letterman show. What did they talk about? The death "hoax". He give the ridiculous statement about Abbey Road cover that he has flip flops on and it was so hot that he kicked them off and walked across the pavement. Really? Hot pavement? Folks this is in your face. Now there are you tube vids out there where people have slowed this conversation down and there are subconscious clues that he unintentionally gives away like his facial expressions, his movement of his fingers, hands and arms and of course his body language. Wow. I’m impressed with your information. You’re an excellent writer. The only thing that I’d change is about the Tavistock institute. Tavistock had more to do with early Beatles work. But it is true that they wanted to usher in the hippie movement. Tavistock wanted to confuse/dumb down kids like they’re successfully doing today. Paul was OK with a little pushing of drugs. I.E. “Good Day Sunshine” was about marijuana that he first tried in ‘65. William Campbell, who was 3 years younger than Paul, did LSD back in 65. Paul died being the only Beatle who had not tried acid. When Paul died, the Beatles made a deal with Tavistock (Theodor Adorno) that if they went on, the creative leash would be loosened for the band to have more of a creative input of their own.

Not quite. You have the history a bit wrong. Paul had his moped accident in Dec. ‘65 where he chipped his tooth. He died November ‘66 in which all 4 Beatles were sporting mustaches. This was not to cover a damaged lip, but to throw off all the fans from noticing the changed Pauls.

As a musician who appreciates Paul's singing, songwriting, and sense of humor, let me just say that the profusion of Beatles tribute bands-which are invariably rather disappointing, no matter how good and authentic the song renditions are when performed (and they're not always very good/authentic)-goes to show how hard it is to find someone who (1) looks the part; (2) sounds the part; (3) consistently carries on the part for decades. It MIGHT be possible to find someone who looked 'sort of like' Paul, but to find-in that same individual-someone who also could vocally SOUND and SING like Paul (and his-what?-3+ octave range)-would be well nigh impossible, unless perhaps Paul had an identical twin. (Even if human cloning existed in the 1960s, consider how rapidly someone would have had to come up with a twenty-something Paul clone/substitute in a mere matter of weeks/months, never mind time for clone to have sufficient singing/bass-playing lessons. 'Rapid cloning' may exist as a fictional plot device in STAR WARS Episode II, but it has yet to be demonstrated in real life.) Add to that impossible looks-alike/sings-alike combination the condition of "writes songs alike" and the high improbability goes just impossibly off-the-scale. A McCartney clone could not accumulate enough similar life experience to just 'step in' for Paul and be convincingly similar as a writer, and even a dedicated composer/songwriter-and I'm one of those myself-would have to work excruciatingly hard to ghost-write consistently believable McCartney-esque melodies, harmonic progressions, lyrics, bass-lines, and arrangements for even ONE song, much less for many albums thereof. The only way around the 'authentic McCartney' style problem with respect to Paul's songs would be to assert that all of Paul's songs were ghost-written by an anonymous third party from the beginning of the Beatles as teenagers in Liverpool and who does anyone suppose would have shelled out the money for that kind of many years-long charade for the sake of some unknown wannabe kid?

Greg, Paul slept with a lot of groupies. He always had to go to the doctor when he came home from tours to get "decrabbed" so he would not give them to Jane Asher. That is also why she eventually broke off with him. She got tired of him constantly cheating. He had no idea whom he had slept with whom he he hadn't, there had been so many. Brian Epstein would pay these girls off when they claimed one of the Beatles got them PG. It was easier to do that and less money in the long run than risk a big scandal costing them loss in sales/popularity. I imagine he could have a good many illegitimate 50 year old plus children running around all over the world. but if their mothers were groupies they usually slept with a lot of other men so they may not even know, as their mothers had no idea who fathered their baby. The people that argue Paul died have been duped. It wasn't Paul who died in 1966. It was John. Think about it. During the "Revolver" sessions, John's voice completely changed (compare "And you bird can sing" with "I'm only sleeping," for example). After 1966, John, or should I say "Faun", started always wearing glasses, facial hair, or long hair so that the facial features were not as noticeable. Faun's body was thin and wiry, John's was much fuller and more masculine. So why all the "Paul is dead" clues? Think about it. If Paul really died and the Beatles were trying to cover it up, would they really put all those clues out? The real reason they did it was far more clever. By getting people to focus on whether Paul had died, it took all the scrutiny off the person who really died and was replaced. And it worked. All these years folks have been focusing on whether Paul died, looking right past the real person who died --14 years before his replacement was conveniently killed off.

Billy Shears is the pseudonym Ringo adopted for his performance of "With A Little Help From My Friends" that track, and the one preceding, the Sgt. Pepper title cut, were linked together, one blending into the next, Ringo starts his song just after the sung intro of the character name. This linked pairing of the two songs was carried over to the 1973 2-LP compilation, "Beatles 1967-1970" where it opened Record 2/Side 1, then carried further to the CD reissue of the compilation Beatles 1967-1970 where it opened Disc 2. As for McCartney being dead, that'd make him a fairly active ghost. Of course his death was never anything more than a publicity stunt, but perpetuated by other than The Beatles, come to think of it.

My take on this, after delving into it in recent weeks, is just a publicity stunt. It involved the Beatles themselves, deliberately leaving clues in songs and in album artwork. With Paul being the one most admired by female fans, it made the most sense to have him the subject of the rumor. It gave the band publicity, kept people talking about the band, and very well may have resulted in increased record sales. I am, however, open to any new arguments, or developments, that might be presented to me. I've been wrong before, and it's only through having an open mind about these sorts of things that I've been able to check myself and correct my thinking.

Well, I don’t know if you believe me- but this is what I know. Before Paul died on November 9th 1966, there were a couple of vague rumors in the press about a possible car crash the year before. Much of that rumor started because Paul had a horrible moped accident Christmas’65. He busted his lip and broke his front tooth. After Paul died, many people who knew of it started to talk about the crash. But it wasn’t in an automobile. The handler wanted to confuse the public, so they had the Beatles publish publicly that he died on the M1 in a (I forgot if it was an Aston Martin) in January 1967.

The real rumor here is that Simon Whitely (the narrator in this "throw up" of review on Paul McCartney's death)) died sometime during this video and was replaced by Andre Agassi (look closely...a good lookalike) When SImon shifts to the right his bald head is just one inch from the top of the screen, then, when he is on the left his bald pate is 2 inches below the top...can't be the same guy!! What you didn't mention about the Sgt. Pepper cover is that you can place a mirror horizontally over the word HEARTS so that it reads: "HE^DIE" wilth the arrow "^" pointing at Paul. The license plate of the car that is visible on the Abbey Road cover reads "28 IF", indicating that Paul would have been 28 years old, "if..." The Beatles line up on Abbey Road from right to left has been said to represent a funeral: John, the priest, in white, Ringo, the pallbearer, in black, Paul, the corpse, barefooted, and George, the spectator, in plain clothes.

Don't forget the infamous Abbey Rd VW Beetle with its numberplate PMC 281F, which many took to be a message that Paul McCartney would be 28 if he was alive - 'though seeing as the album was released in September of 1969, this seems a bit strange. A case of hallucinogens trying to hammer large round pegs into small square holes, perhaps.

If any image showing a hand over Paul's head is considered a "clue", then surely the first to surface is in an ad in TV Guide on November 24, 1966 (Thanksgiving) for ABC's (US) cartoon line-up, showcasing ABC's various cartoon characters, including a "group shot" of the cartoon-show Beatles where John "prankishly" has a hand raised behind Paul's head in "peace sign" style (PALM FORWARD!). ABC ran these ads for several successive years on Thanksgiving, always using the same John's-hand-over-Paul's-head depiction of the cartoon Beatles. Yltsenoh, sega rof daed neeb sah Gits!

WRONG, the rumours started in 1966 when the Beatles recorded the promo videos for Rain and Paperback Writer, Paul had fallen off a moped chipping his tooth and swelling his lip just before shooting began, upon viewing the promo a few people saw the tooth/swelling and started claiming it wasn't Paul, since then the rumour mill gathered momentum and idiots started cashing in/linking anything they could - even fabricating details to fit the narrative (the armband says OPP not OPD etc.), even using pics of Paul disguised to go about un-noticed as supposed original pics of his replacement, Paul grew a moustache to cover the scar on his upper lip so of course this was more 'proof' of him hiding his true identity, watch the PBW and Rain promo vids to see for yourself (this why 1966 is the supposed year) EVERY 'cast-iron' claim is easily refuted/debunked, EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE their heavy schedule would never have allowed for the kind of healing period necessary for such heavy plastic surgery, during that period they were photographed/interviewed/followed/documented almost 24 hours a day - never mind the unlikelyhood of finding as talented, prolific and distinctive a doppelganger who could instantly mimic every nuanced mannerism of McCartney, it truly baffles me how people still keep clinging to this notion, I've read umpteen books on the Beatles and am always irritated by my own need to waste my time setting this story straight but these pathetic videos keep appearing in my suggestions

Paul is died.....I have studied all I could get my hands on. He was a lefty for one.....his singing style changed. His face changed. The truth needs to come out.
