I'll never forget aeeing this movie for the first time...i didn't know the twist...my friends just said you HAVE to see this movie, it's GREAT!!! The creepy sense of foreboding was throighout the entire movie, but the relationship between Willis and Osment is perfection...then comes the twist and the entire audience gasps at the same time in disbelief!!!! As soon as it's over, you cant believe how you were deceived and you immediately have to see it again!!! I went to a matinee and immediately got in mine for a ticket at the next available showing....watching it so intently to see a slip up that you missed, and there is none, just the greatest cinematic sleight of hand since The Crying Game.

When I first saw the movie I thought that Toni Colette's character was also aware of Bruce Willis's character, because there's a scene where Osment arrives home from school and the two are in the living room and I presumed that there had been some interaction between them. So I left thinking "But the mother saw him too in that scene, maybe she sees the dead too!" It was only in a rewatch that I realized that in that scene the two were just sitting there, Colette and ghost Willis, and she's not aware of him.
@revive_memes2753 ай бұрын
Yes, that scene was so well done! Cole’s mom of course never acknowledges Malcolm but to me I assumed it to just be a dr house call or something. What about the anniversary dinner scene? Another one where you think what’s happening is not really happening. Excellent!!

I was one of the fortunate ones, I saw this movie as soon as it came out and I had no idea there was a twist at all. I saw a preview of the movie and was so impressed with it, I planned to see the film as soon as it came out. I'm so glad I had no idea of the twist, as I would likely have figured it out beforehand. I hate knowing that there is a twist, because I end up trying to figure out what the twist is and not just immersing myself in the movie and enjoying it for what it is. I was blown away by the performance of Osment and said at the time, I hoped he would be nominated for an award. And then Toni Collette, I mean, she is phenomenal in whatever she does.

Bruce Willis, whom I miss, was such a unique mix of action hero, movie star and fine actor. He really was an extraordinary talent. And I will always remember the moment in The Sixth Sense when I figured out the twist and went OMG! My boyfriend then looked at me and then figured out what I had reacted to. Great script, great editing, great acting all around, and it's one of those movies you have to see twice. We rented it when it came out so we could look for those hints.

I'm happy that my two favorite films of that year, The Green Mile and The Sixth Sense were nominated for Best Picture. They're both well regarded classics and I enjoy watching reactions to these films here on youtube. Toni Collette deservedly got nominated in a fine lineup, that scene in the car is an acting masterclass. Haley Joel Osment would've been a great best supporting actor winner but it should've been Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile. I have no problem with the Michael Caine win but they definitely could've made better choices like awarding The Sixth Sense something.

“The Cider House Rules” benefitted significantly from the Weinstein effect, characterized by aggressive and strategic Oscar campaigning led by Harvey Weinstein and Miramax. This, combined with the film’s traditional Oscary appeal, greatly enhanced its visibility and success during the awards season. Therefore, Cody is probably right in suggesting that the odds were stacked against “The Sixth Sense” beating the Miramax-backed film for Best Picture.

Honestly, considering the films that they embraced from 99, I wouldn’t have been mad at The Sixth Sense dominating the Oscars. I still find American Beauty entertaining and pretty to look at. But it’s themes and characterization is so shallow and “problematic”, it’s so cringe at times. The Sixth Sense winning Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor (though fraud) would have aged better than the actual winners. Overall, it was a rather poor group of winners and nominees considering what a standout year 1999 was.
@1957DLT3 ай бұрын
I honestly never understood the hype for American Beauty. It was a far less interesting movie, to me, than the others in its category. And you are correct in that it hasn't aged well. But Oscars gets cranky when an outlier gets massive audience talk and box office (see Barbie from last year) and they will always go with 'the serious contender'.
@coliestellar9173 ай бұрын
I remember when that year's nominations rolled out. Toni Collette's nomination was a happy surprise, and it-- as well as the movie's other five nominations--was widely talked about and celebrated since it seemingly came out of nowhere that entire awards season. Although she seemed like a dark horse choice at the time, if anyone had seen the movie, you knew it was a well-earned nomination.

I saw this movie when it was new on VHS, it was super hot, and I was way too young (5th or 6th grade and very sensitive!) The opening scene gave me nightmares for weeks. It took me many re-viewings as an adult to (mostly) get over the intense, knee-jerk residual terror from the parts that scared me so much as a kid, but it's such a good movie, I can't help going back to it again and again (although on the off-chance Donnie Wahlberg comes to my house, he is NOT allowed to use my bathroom)! Well-written, thoughtfully directed, and excellently cast. I love a truly effective PG-13 horror film. I didn't know the twist going into my first viewing, but I was pretty young and didn't have much experience with scary/suspenseful movies. As much as it stands up to repeated viewings, I wish I could wipe my memory of this film and watch it for the first time again as a 30-something in 2024, with no prior knowledge. Would the opening still give me chills? Would I figure out the twist? Either way, I'm pretty sure I'd still love this one!
