I love everything about this. I don't know why the youtube algorithm thought I want to see this but I am so happy it did. Spore is one of those games from my teen years that I never really think about, but whenever it comes up I remember how much I loved it. I always feel like when people think about EA they only think sports games and the Sims. Spore is like the little ugly duckling sister of the Sims and I wish EA had done more with it and made it a series. Seeing now that there are people, who are to this day passionate about this game and want to perserve even the horrible critters I made at 14, fills me with joy. I love it when communities come together like that and fight for what they love when it is threatened by big corporations. Yes, it is just a silly little game, but also it is history and a cultural artefact of its time and, last but not least, so many good memories for many many people. Maybe I'll have to install the game on my computer and just jump into a session for nostalgia's sake. That said, on the technical side of things, I am also amazed that all those creations are just about 1TB of storage. I had no idea that it was this efficient. Nowadays it feels like every game takes loads of storage but, considering how much more expensive storage space was back in the day, it makes sense.

Okay so first of all, this is such a great initiative. This is historical preservation work and I’m so glad it’s being done for one of the biggest games of my childhood! Second: PNGs can hold hidden data?? I’m a digital artist and have been working with pngs for forever but had NO idea this was a thing! That is so incredibly cool. I’m not a programmer but I’d love to see a deep dive into how that secret data storage works!
@KinglyValence3 ай бұрын
Yeah PNGs are really cool! I wondered about that as well and I learned from the Sporepedia crew that the amount of hidden data is relative to the actual image size of the PNG as well. Since the creations are in 128x128, the maximum hidden data is 8KB ( 0.5*width*height). So those 256x256 PNGs that are uploaded to the Sporepedia could theoretically hold 32KB!
@user-oh6uw9mu9u2 ай бұрын
I think a lot of formats can store hidden data. I don't know if spore uses metadata or something else, but I used to mess around with opening random files in a text editor and just adding random text, depending on where in the file I added it a lot of the time they still opened fine. I think as long as the file is still readable to whatever program opens it then extra data doesn't hurt it.
