The web crawling part is really interesting! Had no idea it was that complex. I guess it's important to keep on pushing content on socials then.

Yeah! Honestly I was very surprised to hear that they did that too, but it makes sense why they would.

Would be interesting to revisit the Popularity Index Analysis report you shared last year to see what’s shifted since then! I see a lot of people in the comments section of that video and on the document link that are saying that data doesn’t seem to be an accurate reflection anymore. Might be the type of data that needs to be revisited and updated every year? 🤔 Either way, as a data nerd, I thoroughly appreciate this sort of informations, so thanks!!

Andrew, how accurate is the listeners segmentation? After a week of aggressive ads I'm finally starting to see 40+ listeners from the "artist profile and catalog" section. However I believe that number to be a lot higher, not only due to 130+ conversions but the streams are up massive amounts without playlists or other sources. The daily saves are also pretty much the exact same number as the listeners from profile and catalog.

Sorry if you already said that later in the video, but where did you get that information from? Does Spotify openly admits that that’s how it works or is this from a third party source?

From various developer sources and looking through their software acquisitions over the years. I don’t think they’ve listed it out this way publicly.

This is very interesting thank you! Is it safe to say that Apple Music, Pandora, Deezer, Audiomack, etc. are using similar approaches?
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth Жыл бұрын
I would say yes. However with Spotify its more present with Discover Weekly, Radar, Your Daily Mix etc. Apple Music for example tends to use the home page 'More like Artist X' and they recommend similar artists to what you've been binging recently.

Wait… at the end of video 6:10 there you made an important statement about the algorithm: So Spotify searches ‘the web’ to see if an artist is playing live or if they are getting noticed in music blogs where ‘tastemakers’ are… so this begs the question HOW important is this aspect or weighted value in the algorithm? I would assume if you aren’t playing out or getting press then you are automatically at a disadvantage? It would be interesting to get your thoughts on this.
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure how they weigh all these variables together. I have to imagine that it is true that if you aren’t getting press you’re at a disadvantage in some way, which makes sense. Can’t imagine it’s a deal breaker without it though because some artists are just bedroom artists, but they can still be very successful.

Spotify always puts me on Tom Waits tributes, probably as I am male and don’t sing in falsetto I get plays but not listeners from them Apparently Facebook ads have the same problem plays but not converting into good quality listeners They will listen to me in a playlist but won’t search for me if I’m not right in front of them I hear instagram and tik tok are the best way to pick up repeat listeners not just a 3 second Facebook click through that’s inflated as a full play to justify the effectiveness of the ad buys?

I'm doing meta ads and sometimes one person streams my song 100 times in a day, I'm afraid of repercussions. Only happened twice so far, mexico and brazil, but still worrying.
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth Жыл бұрын
I've seen this happen with a couple artists. One of them had a die-hard fan in Nashville that would stream their song on repeat 24 hours a day for several days at a time, every time they dropped a new song. The person was trying to help, but all it did was make the data harder to interpret. Every so often having spikes in streams is fine, but 100 times a day happening often is probably not the best. However you also can't control what people do. This type thing is fairly rare but I have seen it several times.
@BOF303
@BOF303 Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewSouthworth yeah sucks a bit. Don't think they are streaming for helping, just happens to like the song a lot and stream it on repeat for some hours. (I do this too when I discover a song I really like) , but no big deal, just happened one day and another day, then they usually stop. U probably get bored of the song quick after 100 plays :P
