How The Stanley Parable Was Made and Broke Up The Dev Team

This The Stanley Parable documentary details the development of the indie video game The Stanley Parable and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how Davey Wreden started working on the original Half-Life 2 mod version of The Stanley Parable when he was a 19 year old film student. Davey created the mod all on his own and when he released it, it instantly became an immense success.
Despite all the success, Davey felt very lost after the game’s release, but thanks to the positive feedback from fans, he felt energized again and decided to remake the Half-Life 2 mod into a fully fledged game. He brought in developers from all over the world to help create the remake, including an independent developer named William Pugh. The duo were equal partners on the project, sharing the title of designer and writer. They set up their own studio called Galactic Cafe.
The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Davey and William made and how, after the game’s release, the two developers struggled and parted ways. Lastly, the documentary also takes a look at how Davey and William found their way back to each other to create The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe edition.

This all makes sense now. If you ever played The Beginner's Guide, you'll noticed many parallels of events in the game are the same things that was happening between Davey and William

Apparently, his friendship with Blake Robinson, one of the composers, also heavily influenced The Beginner’s Guide. The way he talks about The Stanley Parable’s development in interviews, it definitely sounds like everything that happened during that time influenced his next game.

@@birdlisa58 What Tony Martinez said in this thread basically. During my research, I didn't find any indication wether or not a sequel of some sorts is in the cards. I do think that the Ultra Deluxe edition is going to be the last and definitive edition of The Stanley Parable. It's finally coming to consoles so they can close the books after that as far as I'm concerned. I do really hope they'll continue to work with each other after that, because we need more games like The Stanley Parable. They're a brilliant duo.

Both Beginners Guide and Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist are great follow ups to The Stanley Parable. The first one has the subversive store and the later the humor. I'm happy that these two didn't part on bad terms and exited for Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe.

A funny detail left out of the video: When William first sent over his level as an audition, davey replied back with something like "this is great! This is almost exactly what I'm looking for" and William took that as he got the job, although davey was planning on waiting and looking at more developers. But since davey didn't have the courage to clarify what he meant they ended up working together anyway 😂 So William pretty much just gave himself the job lol (as mentioned by davey on the tone control podcast)

releasing the demo to lets players was a genius idea, and is what me made buy the game the moment it came out. i loved the game and recommended it to a lot of friends. not even knowing what to expect from the remake, only that development took years longer than anticipated, i assumed it was lots of bonus content in there. bought it, like almost 10 years ago, right on release and its been a blast, even better than i expected it to be. great work, hope to see a new project soon!

First of all, very interesting, nice job and thanks! I didn't know anything about the original version or the creators. To me this really highlights how there seems to be things fundamentally wrong with how things work to produce what everyone consumes as normal. I suppose someone can just learn to deal with the attention of thousands of other people suddenly, but how many times will some people just not? And how William was left feeling because of that whole crediting situation. Real mental illness fuel, I imagine. It's funny because TSP is a game that causes you to see what happens when things go terribly wrong with the way a game is expected to normally run, but the game development itself sort of went the same way for real life for the developers.

There's quite a few modifications to the Source engine itself, but the fun fact of the remake is that it's pretty much a Portal 2 mod. If you open the dev console and set "host_timescale" so high that the game "loses connection" to its own server, the Portal 2 logo still remains on the error it gives. They definitely needed it to be Portal 2 though. The amount of world portals they used in The Stanley Parable is crazy, and P2's version of Source is the only one that has world portals.
