I'm beggining composer (not even 18 years old) and I really want to write some of these beautiful pieces. I have an idea for maybe something like dark Romantic/Impressionistic string quartet, and I'm also thinking about something classical a elegant. Anyway, thank you so much for doing this kind of things, it helpes me a lot :).

Excellent introduction to the String Quartet. I recently began sketching out some ideas for a String Quartet of my own. It (the String Quartet) is an incredibly interesting and engaging (not to mention Challenging) musical form.

The string quartet medium is fascinating for any composer.

Why do I only get a notification of this video a week after I had to hand in my Paper on the evolution of the string quartet 😭. Very Nice video regardless

D major was Haydn’s favorite key in which to compose

Good question, especially in a world of equal temperament. I must say I always love playing in Db major but that’s something to do with how it feels at the keyboard.

The Baroque trio sonata presumably also gave rise to the second-most popular chamber form, the piano trio. Plenty of composers wrote them - Beethoven's Triple Concerto is pretty much a concerto for one - but they never gained the same awareness. Maybe it's because Beethoven never wrote one during his legendary Third Period - is that the reason? Maybe.

Interesting link and an interesting thought re Beethoven.

I think analyzing haydn quartets on the piano is something you could expand into your inside the mind of bach, mozart, and beethoven series, not in spite of there being only a few places where you can play the material on the piano, but because of it. Also, I have seen on another channel a composer, conductor, lecturer who plays quartet sections on the piano during his lectures, and while i cannot tell if he is creating a reduction before-hand or sight reading, either one is an important skill.

Great video as always Gareth. Just to ask, what does the slur over those repeated staccato notes mean for the player in the 4th measure of the second line for Violin 1? I’ve seen these kinds of slurs numerous times in string quartets including those of Beethoven and I can’t make sense of them.
@MusicMattersGB10 ай бұрын
Thanks. It’s a semi staccato marking.

That was very informative, and quite timely: I'm in the middle of composing my first string quartet. It was interesting to hear how sparsely Haydn's piece begins, which makes the legato section on the second page stand out a lot more.

C/alto clefs are one useless thing in music notation. Gain: minimal offset for commodity concerning the range. Loss: pain in the bum for reading qt or orchestra scores.
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
You soon get used to reading the C clefs.

@@MusicMattersGB But - one nonoptimal way is to mentally move the notes up or down to fit the treble or bass clef. In fact I do that too much for the bass clef itself. - basically, the C clefs are useless. - and to compound it, you have the transposing instruments.
