I am so glad that you pointed out the original TMNT comic was inspired by Daredevil. Splinter with Stick, and the Foot Clan instead of The Hand. As for Casey, I totally think Slugger would've been a great alt name for him. And to answer your question? Leo Da Vinci for being a genius outside of the arts, though I much prefer Michelangelo for the Sistine Chapel. Mona Lisa is seriously overrated, though the neckerchief-wearing college kid salamander is better than her namesake in my eyes. :p

Since I am Italian. I am always happy that the two authors chose the names of artists from my country! For the rest, thank goodness they chose Donatello! Absolute respect for Bernini. But he had a name that was too funny, even in Italy it's a name that makes you laugh! Can you imagine hearing one of the Turtles call himself "Berni" in the series?

I'm studying the Renaissance at school, but the only artist I've done is Donatello (the name of my favorite turtle) 💜 My art history teacher has prohibited any mention of the Ninja Turtles during her class and we all obeyed 😅

Because (if I understand correctly), the names were adapted into English in the History books. Generally speaking, no one talks about these artists by their Italian name outside of Italy. Every language has their version of those names. The same happens with the names of the Kings and political figures of old.

There's no official story on how they decided to give them those weapons. Mikey has nunchuks because Kevin was thinking of Bruce Lee, and Donatello is supposed to use a Bo because it's the least lethal weapon (highly debatable). But as far as I know, there is no official version of it.

There's nothing confirmed, but I once heard of a fan speculation for each: a way to cover each turtle's weaknesses, while also playing to their strengths. Leonardo got a pair of katana because he had the unenviable position as leader, thus he got the arguably deadliest weapons to grant him the power and confidence he would need. It helps that he's big on personal honor and is the most dedicated, hence a weapon to resemble samurai the closest, and is certainly one of the most well-known of ninja weapons too. Raphael got sais because they're normally a less-lethal truncheon made for disarming bladed weapons. Still, sais can be used with lethal techniques too -- especially the stabs -- and that plenty of pop culture sais are sharpened like daggers. Thus his aggression can turn a sai lethal as needed, able to punch some nasty holes with the blunted tips or to beat people senseless. Michelangelo got nunchaku because he's arguably the less-focused and most fun-loving member. Even a single nunchaku requires skill and coordination to use, let alone dual-wielding them. In turn, there's a lot of flashy fun that can be had with them once mastered, which suits him well. Donatello got a bo because he's big into technology and, fearing an overreliance on gadgets and gizmos, he got the simplest weapon. However staves can be a highly underrated and highly versatile weapon at both long and close range, and are often the first step into learning pole weapons like spears and naginata. Thus his wits can be put to good use with a seemingly simple stick.

I added the "citation needed" because the information that exists about April Fisher is almost always anecdotical (except for an interview from 1990). The reason the phrasing is always so weird is because at the time of April's creation, they were just dating.
