Fun fact, survivors of Titanic actually described the ship snapping in half but they weren’t believed because of how dark it probably was when this happened. And this was mostly thought to be a myth until we actually rediscovered the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean, split in two.

I remember watching a documentary where the survivors of the sinking were told there was no possible way the ship broke in 2. That the cold and hysteria made them imagine the Titanic could break. They were gaslit until the wreckage was found decades later
@EDCsteals4 күн бұрын
On the flip side I just found out in a very recent documentary that the accounts from passengers stating the ship rose out of the water to a 45 degree angle before breaking could not have been possible, it was closer to 23 degrees at the time it broke. I guess they had some physicists calculate all the factors and it wouldn’t be possible for the ship to raise that high out of the water without snapping. The narrator said most people likely thought the angle was much higher because of where they were located in the water when they break occurred. I just watched it the other day so I’m gonna go in my history and look up the video then I’ll come back and edit in the name of the video Edit: The title of the video is “Titanic Movie Mistakes” by the channel Oceanliner Designs. He talks about it right at the 2 minute mark. Also if you’re into Titanic and other history about infamous shipwrecks this channel does a phenomenal job with visual recreations and finding info that few other documentaries mention. This channel goes above and beyond to give you a deep dive into each event like no other channel does. Being from the Chicago area I’ve watched a handful of documentaries on the SS Eastland(the worst maritime disaster in US history) which killed over 800 people on the Chicago River. I finished that video knowing so much more about the event than I did from all of the other documentaries combined

The Titanic had a double hull on the bottom, but not on the sides. If it had a double hull on the sides, there could’ve been a chance that the outer hull only got damaged. A double hull means just like what it sounds, two hulls, or walls, layered on top of each other. The different compartments that can fill up with water are watertight, and they are called bulkheads. 3-4 could fill up, and the Titanic could stay afloat. Also, I really like ur videos, I learn so much from them. I’m also really interested in the Titanic, so I try to learn everything I can about it, and what could’ve happened, or what could the ship have had, to possibly stop the ship sinking, or decrease the amount of people who died.

While building ships they used these large machines that installed the rivets which held the hull together. However in the case of the Titanic the machine they were using was too large to fit into the lower hull. There was a smaller machine, but it was being used on another ship so it would've taken weeks before they could use it. Management didn't want yet another delay since they were already months behind schedule so they ordered the workers to install the rivets by hand. The problem is that the rivets the machines install are much too hard to be installed by hand tools, which meant they had to create a new batch of softer rivets to do the job. The mixture was poor quality however which made them far too soft and brittle. When the Titanic hit the iceberg all of those rivets burst along the hull like opening a zipper and that's why the Titanic sank. I watched an interesting documentary about it and they were able to retrieve rivets from the wreckage using remote controlled submersibles in order to test them.

It was extremely foggy during that night. Let alone dark. Titanic received a message from a neighboring ship that icebergs were near them. The captain either brushed it off, or didn't receive the information. (I think the latter.) Whenever the person in the Crow's nest spotted the iceberg, he rang the bell three times initiating an obstacle and screamed "Iceberg, dead ahead!" Into the cellphone connecting to the bridge. The ships' rudder was thrown hard to port and the ships' engines were put into full back (reverse) but it was far too late. Lots of people, including myself, believe that if Titanic were to ram the iceberg dead on it would have survived. Titanic's bow was extremely strong.

Not so Fun Fact: Apparently, the ship would’ve stayed afloat if they had hit the iceberg head on because it had a crumple zone in the front much like a car to absorb impacts. This was probably well understood by the crew, but their duty was to save everyone on the ship, and hitting it head on would guarantee the deaths of at least a hundred or so passengers. Additionally, Murdoch quickly made the decision to order that the ship be turned hard to port after the collision, which made the back end of the ship swing away from the iceberg, probably saving hundreds of lives by preventing further damage.

Here’s the weird thing about titanic. During her tests and sea trials she had a fire in the boiler room which made the metal weak enough for a hole to be made. If the fire never happened, she would of survived the iceberg and possibly end up like Olympic or britannic Unfortunately she completed her trials with an unnoticed injury in her hull where she sailed into the night…. Until tragedy stuck. We wouldn’t had a similar accident until the Hindenburg, Apollo 1 and challenger disasters

The most terrifying part I can think of for this is the drowning for the people who weren’t able to fit onto the lifeboats, even if they just made it. The ocean is DEEP and freezing, and it was incredibly dark, so if you couldn’t get onto a boat you’d die slowly to the cold with nothing but an absolute abyss of darkness in every direction around you. The shock alone would make it nearly impossible to move, so for the next few second to minutes, you’d be stuck with the only sensory input being crying or screaming, and seeing nothing but the pitch black void that is the deep ocean.

True, RMS Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. The largest ocean liner in service at the time, Titanic was four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, with an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at 23:40 (ship's time) on 14 April. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 ship's time (05:18 GMT) on 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

When the lookouts saw the iceberg, it had turned out that it was already too late. They failed to turn away in time and hit it. I think this was because of a mistake made by one of the crew members, who, from what I remember, forgot the keys to the locker that contained the ship’s binoculars. Lookouts for ships at that time usually had binoculars to look out for icebergs and other obstacles. I’m pretty sure if the lookouts had happened to have the binoculars with them, they could’ve spotted the iceberg earlier and the Titanic could’ve avoided it.
@pc_buildyb0i9352 ай бұрын
No, for a number of reasons. 1. Neither lookouts nor officers working on the ship's navigation bridge use binoculars when keeping an eye out. I don't know if you've ever used a pair before, but they limit your view to one small tiny area. When on watch, a mariner needs to see EVERYTHING around and in front of them, meaning a full field of view. Binoculars, now as they were then, are used to IDENTIFY something that has already been spotted. In Titanic's case, that would have been redundant. Plus, had the lookouts ever requested a pair or two, the bridge had a few pairs on hand. 2. The coldwater mirage, known as polar inversion, would have rendered binoculars completely useless.
@Annalise_Is_Maybe_Here2 ай бұрын
@@upcupmrbup2 that is true but another thing that was just bad luck is that the front of the Titanic was made to resist more impact and stuff like that so it was basically safer of you can call it that. The ships crew tried turning away from the Iceberg so they did not hit the Iceberg head on. Since the sides where not as strong as the front, it got hit in a weaker spot and this caused the tearing of multiple compartment walls and caused more flooding!

Bro knows everything
@schneir53 ай бұрын
One interesting aspect to the sinking was the cold weather made the horizon appear higher than it was. It's like the opposite of when it's really hot and the road looks shimmery. This made the lookouts unable to see the iceberg until they were too close. And if they had hit it head first, they probably would've stayed afloat. It's like all the factors combined like a real Final Destination.

Here is the whole story So the captain of the Titanic John Smith was warned by another captain that there were icebergs ahead but he told no one then the night of the wreckage at about 11 o’clock the vice captain was driving the ship while smith was asleep and he saw the iceberg but it instead of driving straight into it (which would’ve been the best decision because of the compartments) he tried to dodge it but scraped right along the side of it and then it sank by 3 am
@zayy-m2q10 күн бұрын
There's alot of mistakes in this paragraph. 1. The Titanic went below the water at approximately 2:20 AM, not at 3:00 AM. 2. The captain and the officers were fully aware that the drift ice field was larger in extent and more southerly than in previous years. 3. There "vice captain" isn't the one steering the wheel. The helmsman is the one who operates the wheel, which is usually accompanied with the quartermaster.
