Doing one of these right now, typical vw over think 90 % of the design than cheap out on one of the most important seals in the engine and the most expensive to replace. No wonder the Germans lost the war.

Just noticed oil leaking on my wife's car and progressively getting much worse, this video helped me quickly diagnose it as the rear seal. Can't say I feel much better about having to replace it but I'm glad I know what to expect if I decide to tackle this myself or take it to a shop. Thanks for all the great information!

I have a 2009 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition (2.0L and DSG from Audi). A month ago I had the cam cage resealed due to an oil leak and am still leaking. Was told it was the main seal leaking and quoted a price by the dealer. Talked to a very good shop in town and they told me that it is, as mentioned, due to the high pressure from the PCV. Although the car is older (as am I) it's in great shape and has 75,0000 miles on it. The shop told me not to waste my money having them repair it; that once the seals start going on these it just keeps happening to different seals. I was going to buy a couple of years old Golf if I replaced but now don't know what to believe or if I should just avoid the brand. I've owned 3 VW's and 2 Audi's and love the cars. I don't know if I should repair, replce with a Gold or buy a Mazda..... Advice? Thanks

Humble Mechanic- Just got a P12a2 code in my 2009 Tiguan w/ 106k. I've got an oil leak around my oil filter (replacing filter on Sunday) but am concerned it is my PCV. Noticed a small amount of oil down by the RMS but am not sure if it may be coming from the oil filter. You mentioned LOW pressure but P12a2 shows HIGH pressure. Considering ditching the car via trade in if it is RMS. Too many problems w/ this engine. Love the car, but it may be time to cut my losses.

Pump that crankcase full of smoke through the dipstick tube.... If smoke pours out of the bell housing, your rear main is leaking.
@pjl10228 жыл бұрын
Started to see a small oil leak (about 5 drops/day) on driveway where the transmission and engine meet. It is not coming from the top so suspect RMS. Has about 100K, no fault codes, no noises, engine runs fine. No indication that the PCV is bad. But would it be worthwhile not to drive it, replace the PCV and hope that this that stops the leaking, or is it too late?

Wow, My CCTA rear main looked just like the one in your hands...two separate pieces. The interior seal bond was no longer glued/bonded to the metal mounting flange. I am so glad I watched this video!!! I have a 2009 Jetta with the CCTA engine and after viewing your videos, and those from DAP, I removed the engine to work on head (after a catastrophic timing chain tensioner failure caused all intake valves to bend and hang up open...unable to close. ) and to check the rear main seal. Great call, great advice. Very much appreciate by this viewer.

I think this is my issue sadly. My formerly beloved 2011 Tiguan hit 100k and the heating system went 1200.00 . Water pump 980.00. Coils failed one after another and one coil fail left me going 65 mph to 30 on a major highway in major traffic, after tows and such set of coils and plugs 800.00 or so. Window switch drivers side close to 400.00. As preventive maintenance replaced timing belt 200.00. If this is around 1200.00 I’ll be closing in on 5k. In a year. Never again VW.

I'm a independent VW tech and on my own 09 Tiguan 6 speed manual I notice that it was wet of oil on the trans bell housing it not big amount it's the first time I notice this type of leak on this engine family I though it was just a fluke that mine was leaking not a big deal for me it's 2WD and manual and this not by chance I look specifically for a manual one I will prob. Replace the release bearing/throwoutbearing and I notice too that my clutch shudders some times I might have oil on the friction disc it all makes sense thanks for posting this video I had no idea they were prone to leak I always wonder what is the point in changing a part design if what was used before work well like the oil seal on the 2.0 l 8v they are reliable and I have them in stock.
@HumbleMechanic10 жыл бұрын
V10PDTDI It is most likely due to need. Not sure why they went from a standard design that never(or rarely failed) Cost and parts availability is my guess, but that is just a guess.
@GarthGoldberg10 жыл бұрын
HumbleMechanic Judging by what you showed on the video, it looks like VW went from the earlier style of seal that was rubber (or rubber-like material) with a coil spring wrapped around the seal lip, to a one-piece teflon type of seal. The teflon seal looks cheaper to make, and is probably supposed to last the life of the car. Of course, they don't.

So if I have a system lean and a rear main seal leak would it even be worthwhile to change the intake manifold and pcv that I suspect to also have vacuum leaks ??
@NickyRoads5 жыл бұрын
I just had my MK5 TSI taken in to have the RMS replaced. I was driving, off of a stop light. As I hit second hear I key of the throttle...as I did my car began to shake violently. I thought it was suspension related until I went to give it a little throttle to get of over. As soon as I did I noticed I had loss of power and the shaking got worse When I scanned it...I was getting system lean and random misfires on all cylinders. I didn't see any oil leaking. And did some testing for vaccum leaks. I did testing on the PCV by covering the hole. With no idle change. The next day I disconnected the crank vent valve and covers the intake hole. No idle change but after about 30 seconds I opened the oil cap, got a puff of air along with some smoke. (No a alot..but enough to be alarming) I turned the card off. Didn't hear anything clanking or nothing, but when I looked under the car I noticed oil leaking right at where the RMS failure would leak. A good amount of oil was on the ground. My question is, would a RMS seal cause all of this alone, or could there be something else involved other than the PCV valve. I really wanna do the PCV myself so I can save some money...but am worried that there could be something else causing issues.

HumbleMechanic thanks for the videos! Very informative. I see you're saying the pcv is a main culprit in seal failure. I have a 2011 CC, 86K. I initially took it to one of the chain repair shops, and they concluded pcv was bad, but the entire assembly was a dealer only part. I took it to a VW dealer, and they are saying the pcv is ok (conveniently enough voiding the warranty repair) and the rear main seal would now cost me $1300. Any suggestions on how to proceed, when an independent well know shop is saying pvc is bad, but VW is saying its good, and since it is, they won't cover it? And shouldn't the pvc be replaced when seal is replaced to avoid recurring issue? Thanks for any info!

Check turbo intake pipe clamps that go to valve cover by passenger firewall. Also check inlet and outlet turbo tubes under car on passenger and driver side. @@geeess958 thanks sir. I'll check them out. Appreciate it!
@geeess9584 жыл бұрын
@@eh9deux i forgot to mention that sometimes mystery oil leaks on this car could be in the area of the timing chain cover on the driver side (not to be mistaken for the timing belt on the passenger side). This timing cover has an oil pump attached to it which has a hose that draws vacuum to the brake booster. Sometimes the gasket on this oil pump (and or the timing cover) goes bad and causes a leak which many believe is the rear main seal because of the area. Many of the gaskets in general on this car go bad due to the failing pcv. You fix the pcv but still end of having lean associated codes and gasket failures because of the damage the pcv caused (I've even seen this pcv damage the inside of a valve cover). Also be sure to check the "check valves", especially the one under the intake next to the fuel lines (I once changed an entire intake manifold, gaskets, throttle body fuel lines, etc... the only thing I did not change or check was the check valve... lo and behold the leak/code was still present... took everthing apart again, tested the check valve and sure enough it was bad and the problem...).

+Vanessa Alfano I'd sure call them and ask. But you're out of powertrain warranty most likely.

Out of warranty yes, hopefully not out of luck. Have had more issues (many computer/electric) w this car than any other I've ever owned. Now this! Thanks for your vid and response. Super helpful.

hey HumbleMechanic, do you think rear main seal leak could cause p0507 (idle higher then expectation) my 2009 gti tsi iis show p0507 higher idle when engine is cold,idle rev it self to 1800 after engine warm up, every time i come to a stop, it just rev up to 1800,then drop like choking, replaced new pcv valve and host.

thanks!, i just change the PCV, the plastic was torn, but the high vaccum when i open the oils cap, is still there. this could be the problem? and what could happen if i not change it yet. thanks!!

I was quoted around $1200 for a Rear Main Seal from a local dealership, is the OEM seal they will more than likely use the best replacement or should I look into aftermarket? Is there a time frame on how often these are replaced typically? Thanks
@HumbleMechanic6 жыл бұрын
When properly installed both are good options. The dealer will most likely use the OEM part

Just inherited a mk4 2.0 jetta for $100. Lady said transmission was leaking. Looked in thinning maybe cheap plastic slave was leaking I replaced it. Nope still leaking and coming out the top inspection plug. I think it's the rear main, the transmission shifts fine.

My mk6 GTI had this same seal changed by my mechanic but the car is still leaking from the bottom. I also replaced the PCV valve. Would you assume it was never properly done?

Possible. Those seals are tough to install right without the proper tools

Hi Charles, can this happen on audi tfsi engines as well (CDA engine code). I have a 1.8tfsi that is using a lot of oil, but I can't see any visible oil leaks. I have read up quite a bit and it seems that the oil goes past the rings and this is a manufacturing defect, although here in South Africa they was no recall for high oil consumption like there was in other countries. I am also replacing the PCV tomorrow, could this also improve the really high oil consumption? Thanks

Doubtful at that mileage. You can check the owners manual. They have it online too vw.comb.

MK6 and MK7s.... These cars sh*t the bed big time once they get a lot of miles on them. PCV valve, intake manifold carbon buildup, rear main seal failure, mechatronic unit failure on the MK6 (the dreaded flashing PRNDS) clutch pack failure, fuel pump failure, turbo failure (the MK7) .....and other smaller issues.

ibrar javaidzain@yahoo.com Not if that is the leak. There are other things that can leak on the car. But if your rear main seal is leaking, R+R transmission is the only fix

I have a 2015 GTI that had an odd rattle at idle, they ended up replacing the Cam shaft, sensor and the entire Head. Had it back 1 day and this seal started leaking. Probably from pressurizing the system after it was all taken apart. Good thing i took it in 1000 miles before my power train ran out. Are there any other parts that may go out in a domino affect?
@HumbleMechanic6 жыл бұрын
Not really, this is a stand alone failure other than the PCV valve
@stephenmusslin65316 жыл бұрын
HumbleMechanic thanks. What would be an early sign of the PCV valve going out?
@stephenmusslin65316 жыл бұрын
Great call on the pcv valve. Picked up my GTI and I asked about it. They laughed and said actually we did have to replace the AP separator. It was faulty. Thanks again for the reply.

I'm sad to hear, transmission and clutch removal are no longer DIY for VW 4-cylinder, turbo? I thought a GTI might have been a better car to own than my 2006 MINI Cooper S, but from what I've found, the MINI is actually a fairly DIY car, once you get to know its quirks. (Such as "service position" of the front end).
@HumbleMechanic10 жыл бұрын
Garth Goldberg This could be a DIY, but for many folks I don't think it is. Not compared to something like spark plugs or air filters. I personally think they are not too bad to work on, it IS about learning the quirks just like MINI :)

Humblemechanic, Thanks for the videos. Would valve cover gasket replacement on 2.0 tsi(2012 cc) be too difficult for novice repair? I had dealer quote me Over $700 for this which seems ridiculous for a gasket - there is oil leak evidence on the intake pipe.
