Thank you so much!!!!! I went through several videos that claimed to be diagnostic, but really weren't. You just clearly answered everything I was trying to figure out... Plus the added bonus of connecting my sudden oil leak. Wish I'd known that sooner. Time to get to checking my PCV!

Great guidance, thanks :-) My SEAT had a hunting idle, 'too lean' codes, and a wheezy air sound after engine off. The PCV looked a bit different, but I was able to carefully prise it apart, and voila a ripped diaphragm!

Great video Humble as always. A week or so ago my 2013 gti started idle revving. It would go up to over 2k rpm at stops a couple times before returning to normal. (750 rpm or so) Seeing this video and others forum posts on this problem made me think the pvc was the likely problem. Turns out my local auto store carries just the diaphragm hockey puck sized part of the pvc. So with a little work i snapped out the old and just like you mention, the diaphragm was torn. Put in the replacement and its back to normal. thanks again for your vids.

Huge, huge help. My 2010 CC had been giving me the Cylinder 3 Misfire code several months ago. I assumed it was the notorious carbon buildup and not being ready to drop the cash for repair decided to experiment with a can of Seafoam. Problem solved, no codes for 3 months! A week ago my car died while backing out of the drive one morning. No code; effortless restart. ??? A few days ago I was hit with the P2187 code and a very erratic idle. Your mention of the whistling noise struck a note with me; I'd heard that sound off and on for about a month, always at idle after highway driving. It seems you have perfectly described my issue. Parts are ordered. Thanks for saving me a lot of money at the shop.

Thanks for posting, it helped me. My 2009 Passat engine (1.8 TSI BZB) was shaking badly in the morning after a very cold night outside and had misfire error codes. In the end, the PVC was ok, but the crankshaft seal to the gearbox was leaking. I think the PVC froze and built up pressure. I replaced the PCV and the sealing ring as well as the clutch (reinforced version) at the same time (yes, the gearbox had to come out of course, grrr). Now the engine is running better than before. Best regards from southern Germany

WOW!! I need to thank you so much for this video, it saved my ass. I had NO clue why my 09 Jetta Wolfsburg was screaming at me (squealing so loud), I assumed a pulley or something belt related, never heard such a consistent squealing before. We than got a bunch of misfire error codes and P0507 which lead us to you. The car has been misfiring for over a year and no dealership or shop has been able to figure out why, I kept following the symptoms and replacing coil packs. Finally a shop told me "MAYBE" it's a dirty fuel injector which is a bigger fix on the wolfsburg because you have to take apart the engine more than most other cars. Instead of going down that route we started running fuel injector cleaner at every fill up for months, it seemed to help but the car still had misfires while starting up. We were driving around and the car seemed to be driving fine than out of thin air started the loudest squeal ever, of course we were downtown and everyone was looking at us like we were idiots. Long story short the only way I was sure of the problem was by watching your video and I found the diaphragm under the pcv valve cap/cover was torn just like you said they do. The PCV valve was also very built up with hydrocarbons and oil but I cleaned it out nicely. Now I'm looking for a replacement for the cap and diaphragm. I followed forums and people are recommending the "Dorman 917-064 PCV Diaphragm Repair Kit for Volkswagen" which you can get on amazon for less than $20. Hopefully that will come soon, car is out of service until than.

Thanks for the video. Definitely looks like a DIY replacement. I did however want to make sure I don't change mine unnecessarily. Would you always hear a whistling noise? Or for just some type failures? I suspect mine may be bad, but I don't hear a noise. I do have a leaking seal. Can a bad PCV cause a car to stall? My 2008 Passat LUX (2.0 TSI) with 173,000 miles will run for a bout 15 to 20 minutes and then stall. Once stalled, it will only run for a few minutes at a time. Originally, it would not even crank until it sat for 45+ minutes. I have replaced the fuel filter (definitely needed it), and now it will crank almost immediately, but not run for long. The feedback I've seen would indicate to next look at the Control Module for the in tank pump. Next would be the in tank pump and / or the high pressure pump. I did see someone mention that the PCV valve caused their passat to stall - not sure if that was unique or common.

Hey Charles. Thanks for your videos. I have a question concerning the operation of the pcv system on the 2.0 Tfsi (BWA). If I disconnect the hose that goes to the intake manifold, should it still be vacuum in the crankcase (suction from the rear port that goes to the turbo inlet)?? If I do so on my car, I get a slight overpressure in the crankcase (I can feel it when I open the oil cap). So, I'm not sure if the crankcase vents properly when on boost... The car runs perfect, and I just complain about the oil consumption after 200.000km. Stock Pcv membrane broke at about 80.000km some years ago and I feel that oil consumption has increased since then with the new pcv. Running on 5w30 by the way. Maybe it's time to switch for a 5w40. On the other side of the can I have an Elite Engineering one way check valve (the good one) to keep any turbo pressure from bleeding back through the can and PCV.. It's just added insurance as I don't need the turbo popping the PCV apart and spilling it's guts into the valve train.

Hey man, Thanks for the info. I have an 07 Audi A4 2.0 T and I'm getting some what looks to be black smoke, as well as some hesitation. My check engine light is on and I can't pass inspection without it off obviously. The car has 68k miles on it and I don't beat on it. I think because of the codes it was throwing back on the OBDII that my PCV valve might need replacement. My question is 1.) do you think that could be the case? 2.) Do you recommend any replacement videos for a DIY job on that engine? I'm fairly handy and have done a lot of work on my cars in the past but this is just something I can't afford to take to a dealership right now. Thanks dude. Anthony

My 2015 Jetta started to go thru oil. Took it to my vw mechanic told me it was this unit that got "pissed" and crapped out. Had to replace the whole unit. Doesn't burn oil anymore. Love my car. Just very touchy.

I wish he would do a video on TSI/FSI GTI oil consumption issues. Its one of the most common issues with VW/Audi. Does everything but....
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
Shane Mitchell Thanks for the suggestion. That is really more of an Audi issue than a VW issue. We have seen about 3 FSI engines and 0 TSI engines with oil consumption that falls outside of what VW says is normal. That is small fish compared to the number of PCV valves, and water pumps we see

Shane Mitchell A buddy of mine works for Audi, and he is doing about 1 set of rings every other week. I can offer my thoughts on the situation and what I "think" is happening. But that would not really be a fact based video. If you want my opinion on it, I can chat about it on a Viewer Q&A show. Is that something you would be interested in?

HumbleMechanic Thanks Charlie. Very interesting videos none the less. Main rear seal scares me a little. I bought a 2012 GTI MK6 DSG new and has some oil consumption which seems to be erratic. The car has travelled 23000Klms. Sometimes it uses none then all of a sudden its uses a lot. It always used oil from day 1. I have done some research and believe that many people are experiencing similar issues especially Audi, which uses the same TSI turbo engine. By the look of it the rings seem to be a problem and running in is crucial. Great little car to drive but I'm worried about long term reliability. I hope my worry is just an irrational fear.

Shane Mitchell There are a few issues with that powertrain. I am not sure why Audi is seeing such a high failure rate, and VW is not. For an intermittent oil consumption issue, I would REALLY be looking at the PCV or the diverter valve. Those seem to be the common intermittent issue parts.

HumbleMechanic Thanks Charlie for the info. I will look into it. Keep up with the highly informative videos. I like to learn about the things I own and potential issues, the VW/Audi dealers here in Australia are crooks and do the least amount of work under warranty they can unless they are charging you.

Just wondering if there has been any later revisions to the OEM PCV for the MK6 (I know the mk7 GTI seems to have an updated one...). I replaced mine back in 2016/2017, but do experience extreme smoking in autocross if I have to brake hard then turn hard left then accelerate out of a corner. So based on what I've read I probably need to add a catchcan in line too (want to keep it class legal...)

Another solid simple knowledge vid In the books Charles 💯 now in your *humble"opinion😅 what would be the difference in pulling that plate blocking off the back vent and running a catch can in front running off the front versus those new Africa aftermarket plates and the function difference? Or would there be ? 🤔

I have had a reccuring p0171 on my passat b6 2.0 TFSI. Changed the PCV and break booster hose. Also changed sparkplugs and ignition coils, not because of this problem but because it was planned. Still having problems with p0171, now worse than ever before. The engine is reving up by itself when in idle.. Any good ideas would be appreciated!

I actually have a engine code for p0068-map/maf throttle position correlation and I change the map and maf sensor but still have it so I’m guessing the PCV valve is causing it as well because the OBD scanner says it could be a vacuum leak from the intake manifold

Hey Charles, if you read this... Been watching your videos for a while now, I recently got a job at an Audi dealership here in the UK and it's my first real 'tech' job in the industry. I wanted to say your videos are a great help and also to ask a question about these PCVs. You say they are frequently the culprit of an oil leak (rear main seal), I was hoping you'd explain how the fault with the PCV then causes or worsens these oil leaks? In my experience with these PCVs so far, the oil filler cap is sucked tight to the valve cover because of the excess vacuum. Is it the strong vacuum that pulls seals away from their seating or something else? Thanks in advance.

They're designed like a one way valve, so they should allow gases/pressure/oil vapour OUT of the crankcase to be drawn back through into the intake, but when you're on boost it needs to prevent boost pressure flowing back into the crankcase. If the valve is faulty it won't do this, and so on boost the turbo will pressurise the crankcase. This can push oil out of the engine basically anywhere that it can possibly escape! I guess on that specific engine the most common place it pushes out oil is the rear main seal. With enough pressure, it could perhaps even push the seal out of place?

Hi there. I have a b8 a4 turbo tfsi engine. I bought it almost a month ago. I had it for the first week and it used 2 ltrs of oil in 360 k's or 220 miles so pretty bad. Just been in touch with the dealership today who has been really helpful told me they have done the pcv and main seal and software update. How successful is this stage one fix? I'm not to confident with the amount of oil it was using. Is this likely to fix it? Thanks.

Would a failing pcv cause smoke coming from the exhaust? Especially on start up. I just trying to diagnose my Jetta Gli right now. Old turbo blew up so I replaced jt with a is38. Trying to figure out if it’s the pcv or just a lot of oil that leaked into my charge pipes and intercooler when the turbo broke.
