Thanks for this quick and useful overview of what the N80 is and does! Even for nonspecialists like me the Bentley vid is well worth watching at least through its full, animated description of what the entire evap system does. When they got to the part about how the N80 is _pulsed_ to control how much recovered vapor is routed back to contribute to combustion, I realized why your vid included a "not recommended as a test" label at the point when you mention just hitting the N80 with 12-V dc to listen for clicks.

Hi Charles. Thanks for all the great videos! Any thoughts on the following simultaneous codes? 04759: Connection charger - Throttle valve, pressure drop. 08584: system too rich at idle, bank 1. 04243: bank 1, fuel measuring system 2, malfunction. 08825: intake air system. I ha an exhaust leak first, then rough idle, had exhaust repaired, still got rough idle (but not for a while now) and now have these codes. Thanks for any help if you have the time. Regards John.

Very helpful. I have a P0441 code (Incorrect purge flow) on a B5 A4 and was reading from a lot of sources that it could be the canister. I'm happier knowing about this part as one of these from bosch is about $40 as opposed to a $200+ Canister

My Golf had the same code, changed the N80 sensor and code cleared itself.

Hi! I have a vw lupo 1.0 mpi(auc) with P0401 - 35-00 error EGR System: Insufficient flow. The EGR Valve and pipe are very clean and I still got the issue, do you have any idea what is wrong with it? Thank You!

I had this happen on my rabbit and it unfortunately did damage to the fuel pump, purge valve, gas tank, and the charcoal canister. I never got a check engine light, I found out because every time I went to fuel up it would only pump a half gallon or so before foaming up the filler neck and shutting the fuel nozzle off. Do you have any recommendation on checking the filler neck check valve to make sure it is open? I think this same issue may be happening on my mk5 Jetta now.

I need to test the purge solenoid on a 1.2 VW POLO (2011 model). Electrically it appears to be doing what it should, but when I removed the valve and tested it with a Mightyvac, the results were a little inconclusive. Basically, it will hold vacuum from the inlet manifold side, but it slowly leaks when vacuum is applied to the fuel tank side. Does this mean that the valve is good or bad? thanks.

Hi, I have a question regarding my 2003 golf gti. almost every day I have a stalling and rough idle/general rough running issue. I never get a check engine light and rarely it throws a bank 1 rich code. I have watched the short term fuel trim when it is running rough and stalling and it fluctuates aggressively between rich and lean state. I have replaced the MAF sensor, with a genuine Bosch part and am looking at the next thing either being the evap system or an O2 sensor... any thoughts? thanks in advance!

This video is a gold!! So much useful information is shared in such a short period of time! All is clear, gives nice recommendations and explains potential problems caused by the failed purge valve. I do get several errors from the OBD tool, which I am leaned to connected with this failed part. Will give it DIY try. Thank you so much for the video, @HumbleMechanic!

Hey back again. Just went outside and checked the wiring connection to the purge valve and bang its working correctly. Loose connection. Thank you for that comment you said about wiring in this video made me check it again to be sure.😁👍👍

2 questions... Is there any way to clean this valve... lets say with carburetor cleaner for example ??? If you look inside it has something like a screw... what does this "screw" do ???

Your advice was awesome. After I topped off my gas tank, I couldn't get my car to start. It kept coughing..... Had you not mentioned "don't top off your fuel tank..." at the end of the video, I would have never made the connection.

No, it means when you are filling past when the pump clicks off. Like dont try to make it to an even number.

Great video! I don't have 001089 - EVAP Emission Control Sys: Incorrect Flow but the last two times I filled my tank it had a very rough start! It took a few cranks and runs really rough for a minute or two. After that it's fine and starts without issues until I fill up again. This just happened after using Jectron Fuel injection cleaner but I think the EVAP purge valve might be the culprit? Do you think this might be my issue and do you have any more info on testing this with VACCOM measuring blocks 070 an 071 that you mentioned? Here's my current codes. I usually get the first two codes and then once it throws the 3rd code (17511 - Oxygen (Lambda) I get a check engine light. I just bought a Mityvac vacuum test kit I can use also but figured it would be good to do a VAGCOM check first. 3 Faults Found: 16683 - Boost Pressure Regulation P0299 - 35-00 - Control Range Not Reached 16891 - Idle Control System RPM P0507 - 35-00 - Higher than Expected. 17511 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating; B1 S1 P1103 - 35-10 - Performance too Low - Intermittent Readiness: 0000 0100

very informative, working on a 2007 a4...looked at the famous n80 valve but the culprit ended up being the leak detection pump...when testing between terminals 1 and 2 there was no continuity. thanks!

so weird... a friend contacted me today on Facebook about his car problem.. his gas cap light kept coming on. he replaced his fuel cap with no luck. after searching around, i learned about this part. i told him to try it first, as its pretty cheap.

Hello Charles! Am having a P-0444 (EVAP valve open) engine light. On my 2003 VW Rialta RV Euro-van. Replaced the N-80 purge valve and still get the light (even after clearing it). would you suggest checking the vent solenoid next (does it have one)? Also having problems fueling the van now. Nozzle clicks off at the pump. Feel that replacing the canister is too much for me to do myself. And want to check all my options before I take it in to a mechanic. Thank you!

Hi Charles from Australia. If you had a faulty purge valve that is stuck open and you have over filled your tank, could this create a situation where liquid fuel could be sucked into the manifold and then create an oil dilution situation as to excess fuel being drawn into the combustion chamber? Very informative! I have a 1998 Passat V6. Would this likely be the cause of me having the codes P1137, P0422, P1129, P1127, P1141, P1139, P0411, and P0442? I replaced the MAF sensor hoping it was the cause of all my problems but that wasn't so. It has a rough idle until it runs for a bit and tries to stall when little pressure is placed to the gas pedal. Also doesn't like to shift until 3400 rpm in Auto mode. Tip is fine. Getting the fuel pressure checked soon as well. Any advice is appreciated!

+David McCoy yeah man I do have 1999 audi A6 do same thing to me when I start the car it feel like tiger and shakes for a bit, when it drives it going to use more gas maybe because it shift gear to late usually when I go 100p/h it around 2000rpm but now it goes to 3200-3400 rpm and sound bad trying to replace many things but nothing now going to change a VAPOR CANISTER PURGE PCV VENT VALVE will se how it goes

I have the same problem with my Holden Captiva...every time I refuel it wont start straight away...I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump but still hasnt helped the problem...do you recommend fixing the purge valve??..any help will be greatly appreciated

How did you removed the filter? I'm always getting a pending incorrect flow code. How many cycles do it need before CEL turns on?

Nice 1, Charles! Just had a rough idling/stalling 1.4 Mpi AUD engine. Scan brought up p1426 evap purge valve open circuit. Found electric connector unplugged there. Strange world! A lot better now, just monitoring a p0141 O2 bank1 sensor 2 heater circuit malfunction.

Have an 08 R32 with 77k. Car hesitates at high Rpms & idles rough when letting go of the brake pedal until it fuller goes forward it goes away. Replaced the spark plugs and coils. It idles a lot better but the problem still persists. Check engine light came on and one of the VW Techs said it could be the N80 Valve. Could that little thing cause this whole ruckus?

@HumbleMechanic Great video and explanation. I'm trying to test my valve but I have a 2016 Jetta with the 1.4 so it seems like the whole assymbly must be removed and not just the valve. I thought I could try to pressure test it by disconnecting the input side but I can seem to get it off whatever it connects to (canister?). Does it slide? Pinch? who knows...

Appreciate this is was posted 6 years ago but very applicable now. I have 2011 Fabia TSI that has a fault when at running temperature in "coughs" intermittently at from about 1200 rpm in 4th and 5th gear, and has produced no fault codes. I have a general engine analyser that is showing 630psi on the fuel rail and goes up to in excess of 1500psi when driving. I can't get hold of what the fuel rail pressure should be. I currently working through the fuel system cleaning and checking sensors. I've just disconnected this sensor and there's no fault code shown. Any ideas, and what the fuel rail pressure should be? Hi,iv got a golf gti mk5,I’ve changed my N80 valve my charcoal canister but if I use my OEM petrol cap and drive a few miles and open the petrol cap I’ll get lots of blocked gases and a sound like the petrol tank has just expanded so iv got to drive with a universal smaller petrol cap to let the gases out,do you have any advice? Iv been told iv got to drop the talk to unblock the pipes that run along side the petrol talk as there blocked 🤷‍♂️

Could a secondary injection fault code be because of this? It also says incorrect air flow on the code. I dont have a fancy scanner to tell where exactly the problem is.

Hi Charles, not sure if this is an appropriate comment but I am kinda stuck. I am getting a P2400 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit/Open" on my 2013 GTI. I noticed you said something about not topping your tank off, and before this fault showed up, I had to fill up with a leaky gas can... would spilling fuel into the little hole in the chamber behind the gas cap door cause this part to fail?

Well that explains why my car is hard to start after getting fuel, mine was stuck open! Replaced it and no more CEL and it starts right up after fueling.

This was helpful, my 2014 Jetta is having this issue, but will it also cause the car not to start for about 30 at a time randomly? Or could that be another issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated

recently bought a used 2013 tiguan - seemed fine but a few days later engine light started going off - took it into my local VW dealership and they said it needed carbon cleaning and spark plugs - $975 later it went off again - drove it with light on and when we were able to get back in they say it needs a purge valve another $900. Starting to feel like they are taking advantage of me. Shouldnt they have been able to diagnose the valve when they diagnosed the need to carbon clean. Any suggestions?

Thank You! I've been chasing a fuel rich/intermittent boost issue that was compounded by a bad temp sensor on my wife's MK1 TT for months now. It's one of those multiple problems manifesting with odd issues. I watched your video, took my N80 valve off in about 2 min gave it a sharp tap on the table and voila, gobs of powdery crap. I'm not sure if swapping it out will solve all the issues I'm having, but I'm confident the blockage is at least a compounding variable. Thanks again!

I'm just about a minute and a half into this video and you made me feel crazy old! LOL! you mentioned the "Way Old 1551" ! When I was a tech at VW, that was our scan tool. Ha Ha Ha! Mr HumbleMechanic I am getting a clicking noise from the passenger side when I start my car, I was told that it could be a anti shudder valve, could this N80 valve be what they are talking about or are they two separate things.

Forgive my lack of knowledge but would this cause the pump to keep shutting off or would the be from a clogged evap hose or something? I have a 99 passat with the 20v 1.8t

Hey, thanks for this, just wondering if you can give some advice on a 2010 Polo (1.2L) that has a 4.36v on the positive side of the 2 prong connector, there is no short to ground (engine off .2v on either wire). The Check engine light is on with a P1426 code.

I have mis fires on cylinders 1 & 4 in my 09 passat 2.0t. It also ready a random misfire and shoots a cel. This is typically only on start up. Recently replaced intake, injectors, plugs and coils. Typically runs fine but will shutter some and hesitate to start ramdomly. Would this possibly be the cause based on that info?

Hello my friend! Look i have a GLI 06 2.0 turbo, and it has a P0106 always on, i changed my map sensor and still the same code, look like the lines are ok, the conector has its voltages. 5v-Signal-Ground. WhAt coould be cousing this code?? Should be the n75 valve? Or the turbo itself?? I hope you can help me a little, also n80 seems fail too cause i have a system too lean,

So I know this is a pretty old video at this point, but... Does an Audi A6 C7 (2011 - Present) suffer from the same issue with the N80 valve? I had an Audi A4 B7 (2005.5 - 2008) before this car, and ended up having to replace the N80 twice during it's run. My current car is giving some similar codes, and while the shop has diagnosed it as possibly an issue with the PCV (something else I had to replace multiple times on the old A4) I wanted to check all my bases before throwing out the $1000+ required for that repair!

Question, my Jetta had the fuel rail bolt recall. I wasn’t notified so didn’t know and turns out my car has been leaking fuel for a while. A few weeks ago it started dumping fuel while driving down the expressway. Had it towed to the dealer, they “fixed it” but now I have an active CEL with EVAP flow. Would the fuel leak cause this to go bad?

I have a 2000 audi tt Quattro 180hp. i had the code p1136 fuel trim bank 1 too lean. i replaced a destroyed brether hose but now I'm throwing the code p1127 fuel trim system too rich. n80 valve was listed as a possible cause. I replaced the thermostat thinking it could have been stuck open plus I had overheating problems but it didn't fix the system rich. any tips?

Got a p1426 error on the board computer, so went out and replaced it. The errror remained so how do I know if it's an electrical issue? (it's a 2004 Polo 9N)

We had an issue with an polo vivo 2010 model not starting on hot days standing outside...my boss recommend to block off valve with an ball bearing in the inside? No fault codes and vehicle start every time....is it possibly hurting something ells? Just curious otherwise it works

I have pretty much no mechanical skills and have been lead to this video because I was doing doing research on why my '97 VW Eurovan keeps shutting off while I'm trying to refuel. If I pull it out slightly or do it really, really slowly, I can get it to fill eventually. On the Facebook Eurovan page, some suggested it's a faulty purge valve, so I've made my way here. One year later: my problem was resolved with the new EPV, but my van is getting that can't-fuel issue - though I've not thrown a code yet. I've got another one on the way, but what could be causing my refueling issue if it's not the EPV? Thanks for any tips!

Thank you for the video. My car would have a hard time starting after I filled it up and had no codes. Today I replaced the purge valve. Right after, I took the car for a test drive and notice my car was idling too low when in drive at a stop light. Can you think why this is happening? Thank you

i pulled a vacuum on this n80 valve from the TB connection and i pulled 30" and it decayed to 5" in a minute so i wonder if that might be my p0171. i did a vacuum test at the TB by taking that n80 hose off and i had 19" of vacuum so i'm wondering if this little bit of decay will cause that p0171 code to set? the maf was .01 at idle 700 rpms if that is normal? and .02 at 1500 and .3 at 2000 rpms so that checked out with a known good 2016 chrylser that it's maf had the same readings at the same rpms. thanks

Charles HELP!!! I cant put gas in my MK7 R tank. I watched that EVAP video and the MK7 appears to be set up differently than shown. I don't know if we have an ORVR system on the R. I have tore everything apart and tested everything the erwin lists. There was gas in my EVAP can. I cleaned it out and everything tests correctly but I still cant put gas in. Is there a roll over valve in the vent or filler tube that could be defective? I have also pushed and held the filler flapper open with the 980mm hose and it didnt work. I also unplugged the tank vent line at the EVAP and it still wont take any gas. I dont think its the suction jet pump because I can tell its pulling from the driverside to the passenger side as it should. Plus that pump is not serviceable on the NA R. What do you think it is?

u should go VW that known problem issue they replace u for free normaly* use a pretexte suction jump is bad they would change whole part anyway*

Can this part also cause a car to run rough? My daughter has a 2010 beetle with a 2.5 and every time she fills up, she has to give a little bit of gas on the pedal otherwise the car will not start. Just today she was making a turn and all of the sudden the car just lost power and she rode to a stop but it was running rough. The check engine light is on as well as the fuel cap light. Had the car checked at AutoZone and they pulled out a code P0441. Any ideas?

Mk4.5 jetta 1.8t with 220k miles with APR stage2 . Replaced fuel filter & its started to stutter at high rpm and threw a system lean in bank 1 o2 sensor n went away . Could this part be responsible ? Was thinking fuel pump but not sure . Only ran 94 or Cam2 for fuel since 04 when new

i have 5 codes that shoot off two for the eval, air injection relay pump- secondary, mass air flow sensor, and i dont. i have looked over your video and idk if i should also change my mass air simce i have had problem with a code popping up continuously even after i cleaned it

Could this also cause a back up of fuel vapour, in effect filling the charcoal canister with fuel and in turn give you a fuel leak from an over flow pipe off the charcoal canister?

@@Ponskippa No worries for the late reply. I had a right mess about about with this problem. In the end, I put it down to the new E10 fuel affecting the internals of the fuel filter. Changed that (after changing the charcoal cannister too) and switched to E5 (as recommended for my Audi). Been good since.

@@AutoFlexUK I’ve been using mostly “no ethanol” fuel in my VW GTI and mine failed. I found online that the 2015 GTIs had a recall over a part called a suction pump inside of the gas tank that fails and leads to problems with evap and purge valve. Along with misfires. My car was returned to me yesterday and i still am having problems. Taking it back today. What a headache.

@@Ponskippa I had a load of problems at once. Noisy tappets, noisy rear chain, misfire at 5000rpm. Cat fault, o2 sensor faults. Ended up taking the head off, getting it skimmed etc, renewed all the tappets and rear chain unit, new haed gasket obviously, new cat and new o2 sensors. Then it developed a problem with fueling, when they introduced E10, kept coming up with "cat threshold" code and started leaking fuel from the overflow on the charcoal cannister. So I figured that the charcoal cannister being full of fuel, that the N80 valve was pulling through fuel, not just vapour. Changed the charcoal cannister, which was drenched with fuel, but it kept happening, leaking out and fault code kept coming back. Did a bit of digging on E10 and found out the effects it has on plastics, rubbers and aluminium. So I worked out that the one thing that I hadn't thought of, because I only changed it a few months before, was the fuel filter. It's the one with 4 pipes on it, for the evap system. So it must of warped the inside of the filter and was pulling fuel in too much. Anyway, I changed the filter, and the cat again, went over to E5 Super Unleaded and it cured the problem. Then about 2 months later, a load of vac pipes under the manifold started splitting and leaking air, so had to short all that out too. Lol.

Great video, I just had my canister fail and was replaced by the dealership under warranty (2012 GTi Edition 35 with 90,000kms/56,250mls) can fuel octane level affect the longevity of the canister?

No, octane level is only related to safe compression of your fuel. You can use the lowest allowed for your engine. All the same. -> www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/octane.shtml

Will replacing this part in my 08 gti fix the fuel cap light that comes on randomly and seldomly? I have yet to get a CEL along with the fuel cap light though. My fuel cap is new from the dealer which helped reduce the frequency of the fuel cap light coming on. Any advice will be appreciated!

hi, i got a p0441 code on my 3.6 FSI 2008 Touareg. Should i just go ahead and change this first, and see if the problem persists? (im getting rough idle on cold start for about 1 minute only, no problems related to refueling) Also , roughly where is it located? Thx in advance

Great channel. Thanks for posting these, I just subscribed. I have an error code P2402. The read out says "Code P2402 indicates that with the engine running above a specified RPM the PCM detected a high voltage on the eveporative emission system leak detection pump control circuit" Would the N80 trigger this fault? I have a 2012 Jetta S with the dreaded 2.0 l4 engine. Thanks again for posting these

have you ever seen one of these cause a crank start issue? I have a 2002 Cabrio that has fuel pressure but the injectors aren't getting a signal from the ECM. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and the crank sensor. I have good spark, and fuel pressure, but it won't fire unless I introduce fuel directly to the intake. I'm getting a P0445, and a P2441 as well as P0418 and codes for injector circuits 1-4 "low".

Audi A4 2.8l, When I unplug the electrical wire from Purge valve (N80) car stays running and drive .As soon as I plug it, the car will shut off . Could the purge valve be the problem or Ignition control module since the wire that connect to the N80 is from the ICM?

Im getting 4 codes p0444 3 times and a p043f. Changed that sensor and rear pump valve of evap. Still no fix. Any idea's🙏🙏🙏

Hey Charles, im a new work in progress mechanic, im trying to fix my 01 beetle GLS 2.0 hatchback, I have had it to 3 mechanics and they didnt fix any of the issues but did take my money, I have a 1473 code with a few others but they are not worrisome, the car hisses when its off until you take the number 2 line off on the battery top fuse box, if you leave it hooked up it will drain the battery completely, it seems to be coming from under the front of the manifold, I do have an EVAC code and my ECP light is on....any suggestions would be awesome.

Can you help me. I have a turbo 2002 vw beetle. The other day I was driving and somehow one of my hoses came off. This caused the ecm light and the triangle with a circle light. Once this was fixed the car was fine. This morning it was cold so the car doesn't like the cold but when I started it up it did fine. When I put it in reverse it started to sputter so I put it in park and tried to give it gas and when I did this nothing happened so I put it back in reverse and it wouldn't go when I gave it gas. So when I turned the car off to go get my husband I came out to show him I started the car it started right up with no issues. Do you know what this would be? Would the mass air flow sensor cause this or the n80 cause this? Please help!

I have two errors on my 2007 Passat. PO455 and PO171. These both pint, per your video to the N80 failure. I am curious if needing to replace the N80 would this in general require a Cannister replacement? And though DIY, if typically it opens a can of worms, is it still better to take it to a shop? It will throw these codes on acceleration and it is very difficult to start after putting gas into the tank.

Charles, A 2006 Jetta 2.5 I had to replace the purge valve, it was bad (blowing through it); something wired happen on my way to work approaching a down ramp, the car started to accelerate on its own, I had to trough it in neutral and turn off the engine ( that was crazy) I do remember having trouble filling the tank due to air (gasses) in the tank while filling from empty, I still have that problem; after a while (the day) going home it was fine. I do have a PO442 code Small Leak; I'm wondering if it can be a saturated charcoal canister or what can cause that to happen? Thanx Forest Gerstner

hi humble mechanic I have a 04 vw beetle I have a code p2279 also some misfire codes I replaced pcv breather on valve cover also when I unplug the purge valve I think it should be fully close and I install vacuum gauge on purge canister side and I'm reading vacuum you think purge it's not sealing

I keep getting a random gas cap light in my 07 passat. I replaced the cap but i keep that light from time to time. It only happens maybe once a month and only stays on for 1 key cycle. Could this valve be the cause?

Hey I have a Volkswagen CC 2010 TSI 2.0T engine and I get this code, P2187 System Too Lean at Idle (Bank 1) DTC, my car doesn't seem too different just some dips on the rpm when I stop completely on a red light. I mainly feel the dip when I got near and below 1/2 tank of gas. Can it be this valve?

Would it start clicking when it has/ has started to fail? I’m hearing a clicking noise at idle from the front top of engine on pas. side and I think I’ve tracked it down to this valve but have no MIL indication. (2011 Jetta 2.5L)
