This is one of the cases where putting gameplay over everything can be bad. It may be fun and very replayable, but if there is nothing else it can feel empty and forgettable. It's pretty similar to what happened with Four Swords Adventures. It was going to have a greater story, but Miyamoto said to focus on gameplay. Unused text reveals that it was possibly going to be a prequel to A Link to the Past with a more faithful interpretation of the Imprisoning War than Ocarina of Time. The final game seems to be fun, but nothing else.

This is why I don't understand why people praise Miyamoto so much to the point where they're like "listening to Miyamoto is actually good a thing" or whatever. Yeah, he's had a lot of good ideas. However, when it comes to Zelda, he's the reason why Master Quest aka "Ura Zelda" isn't the epically cool expansion to OoT we thought and wanted it to be, and why both OoT and Four Swords Adventures aren't the A Link to the Past prequels they should've been. I know OoT takes place before ALttP, technically making it a prequel. However, it has nothing to do with the Sealing War from ALttP's backstory and the ending that does exist in OoT does not even lead to the Sealing War. The game was a total retcon in the end. And FSA unfortunately met the same fate. Both or the case with FSA being the fault of Miyamoto. I believe at one point, Miyamoto did want OoT to be connected to ALttP as prequel of sorts. However, his idea involved OoT, when it was still called Zelda 64 at the time, being a sequel to Zelda 2. For that to work, of course, especially given Miyamoto's hatred towards Zelda 2, Zelda 64 would take place after Link failed to prevent Ganon's Return in Zelda 2. Possibly that Zelda 64 Link would also be the same Link from Zelda 1 and 2, with a similar recovery plot point like BotW and TotK much later. However, this story would change drastically overtime until it followed more simply and closely to that of the story we know from OoT's final release version. Considering how development usually prioritized gameplay over story, I believe that whatever was thought of for the story this returning Ganon plot didn't survive long enough to be well thought. And neither did any other takes on a failed Link story that likely came later. But based on most builds of Zelda 64, it's apparent that they were all definitely developed with ties to at least ALttP in mind. But at the end of the day, OoT became it's own story with an ending that does not lead to ALttP. Instead, the only connection to ALttP we did get was the implication that ALttP's timeline happens due to a game over. But how is that Miyamoto's fault in the end? Two words. Young Link! While I love the little guy, I feel like this is what killed Zelda 64 and gave us OoT at least a console gen too early. I feel like Zelda 64, while it may not have been as great as OoT, still would've been quite memorable as the game actually looks prettier on the N64 than OoT. While OoT would've better on Gamecube in my opinion. OoT's attempt at an artistically realistic artstyle was a little too ambitious for the N64 era. The Gamecube would've been perfect for the artstyle they were going for with OoT. And Wii would've been better for Wind Waker. Ever since the N64 era, Nintendo has had a nasty habit of releasing ambitious Zelda games ahead their time. And even sometimes cancelling/scrapping ideas because Miyamoto wanted something simpler or more ambitious too early. Probably the only time it was good to listen to Miyamoto when it came to Zelda was A Link Between Worlds. However, Miyamoto's idea was for a remake, not sequel. Though the idea of sequel probably wouldn't have been thought of if not for the remake idea. So I still have to give the man credit for the one time it was a good thing that the Zelda team listened to him. Though, like I said, while the man does have a lot of great ideas, and listening to him has been good before, that doesn't mean it's always a good idea to listen to him. And the scrapped Twilight Princess sequel is proof of that. However, I'm not saying that the Crossbow idea is bad. Just that it would've been cooler if the crossbow was just simply the main focal item for an entire adventure. The Zapper could still be used for a smaller game that is much like the Crossbow Training we got. But for the main game we use traditional controls with motion control aiming when using the Wiimote and nunchuk. I imagine the game would actually be a new generation of Link in the same Hyrule, with some new areas, a whole new story, new threat, new enemies and bosses, and new dungeons. And the game would feature a slightly younger Link, being a new Young Link at age of 14 or 12 at the youngest. He'd be big/tall enough to hold a crossbow. Finally, the game would be called "The Legend of Zelda: Crossbow of Light". We've had a game centered around Link's cap and one around his sword, but not his bow. But just imagine if we did though, and before the sword one. So yeah, the fact we could've gotten a truly epic Zelda game instead of the small budget spinoff we got really does make me feel like the anger that fans had towards Miyamoto in 2008 truly was justified. Us fans had every right to upset at him back then. We could've had another amazing 3D Zelda game after Twilight Princess before Skyward Sword. But Miyamoto denied us of that joy. Shame on him!

Even if it had been pitched as a dream or nightmare sequence, at least it would have resided firmly in the universe.

I think Link's Crossbow Training was fine. Thing to keep in mind is, if they had spent time making a bigger game that would delay time from making Skyward Sword. I love Majora's Mask but I doubt a Majora's Mask style game could have been made in the same time frame as Crossbow Training was.

This Alternate "'Twilight Princess 2"' Probably could have released in late 2008 or early 2009.

I'd have preferred a full sequel, though Midna The little Imp was a big selling point for me, she really was a great character.

We need a sequel where the Hero of Twilight exploree the Twilight Realm

That would kinda make its ending cheap. It was a powerful ending because if Midnas sacrifice.

@midnightnavigator I'm sure there is a way to make it all fit together without cheapening anything

@wildbard4112 There's a slight hook in Rusl's intro dialog about twilight being the time of day that their worlds overlap. It could mirror Majora's Mask that trying to find a way is the catalyst of his quest, and let that drag him to new lands. From there, it can pick another plot. I'm also kinda hoping that Link is joined on his adventures by the Bulbin Gang. Either as his allies in battle, or just scouting ahead in different regions. Lol, or have them be a Red Dead Redemption-style posse where they set up a camp or camps and the Bulbins chill at camp when you drop by.

My thoughts are similar to yours, it's a fantastic and fun game to play through if you want some quick fun, but I really do wish we could have gotten a proper sequel to Twilight Princess.

2:17 we probably have seen those stories already given the team's penchant for reviving old, discarded ideas in new games many years later such as the horseback combat from OOT showing up in TP. Or the dual timeline mechanic of OOT which was an idea from the early development of the very first Zelda game. In fact with how out of step SS was with the rest of the franchise on its first release I'd wager that that particular game was influenced by the development of Crossbow Training.

Now I wish we got a TP sequel cuz TP is my 2nd fave Zelda!

I wonder how much a TP sequel would've actually been what people envision now. We saw how people horribly misconstrued what Retro's Sheik game actually was. I'd love to learn definitively what their original designs for this were.

The next Zelda game should have Link wielding actual firearms, like Shadow the Hedgehog.

I didn't even know this game existed, but if they made a full Twilight Princess sequel, I would have gotten that in a heart beat! Who cares if making a "grand story" would take longer, the fans would want it! I'm sure they realized this later, as now we got Tears of the Kingdom as a full sequel instead of just more side stories as DLC. (Although more Zelda content in any form is welcomed in my opinion ^^)

I would’ve liked to see Termina depicted by the TP graphics in a new game or some new dimension Link travels to. I had never heard of this shooting game till now.

Despite the fact most people my age played Ocarina of Time as their first Zelda game, TP is my actual first. While it is not my favorite, though not by much, I love the game. I remember at the time people kept asking for a sequel for it. Interesting that Tears of the Kingdom had the opposite treatment.

These type of arcade styled games are supposed to be short, and really the issue at hand isn't the length - it's the scoring system. It's not the only concern, (the game absolutely required more boss encounters despite Miyamoto's dumb persistence about it, for example) but the scoring system having more thought and depth would breathe life into the replayability of the game without changing its identity entirely. That said, I bought it on release and would much rather have had a TP sequel.

I feel like the Crossbow Training could have been part of the main game (Twilight Princess) if the developers would have had more time to implement it. I feel like this would have been great as a way to make the Hyrule Field more lively. If I remember correctly, LCT plus the Zapper was 20 Euros / 20 Dollars, so I don't think you can complain too much. And yet, I agree that a true extension of Twilight Princess would have been better.
