iPhone 5C is widely regarded as Apple's worst iPhone and an overall failure. However, the lessons Apple learned from the iPhone 5C can still be found in their marketing and product strategy today.

I had the 5c and absolutely loved it. One side effect of the plastic shell is that it survived side impacts better and was easier to replace the screen. On metal iPhones you commonly had to reshape the sides when replacing a display, the 5C pretty much kept its shape but squished. Much easier to get a replacement display to fit correctly.

I had the 3G, 4S, 5 and 5C. I thought it would be nice to have some colour on an iPhone for a change. The only issue was that because it was essentially a 5, it felt like I just bought the same phone as i had. Plus the plastic scratched very easily and the blue was lighter than I would have liked. At the time Samsung, Sony and others were coming out with way better specced phones and so the iPhone really seemed stagnant. So after a year I sold the 5c and got an Xperia Z2. Fantastic phone and it was way ahead of iPhone in every way. The XR was definitely the C done right but it was too bulky and underspecced compared to my S7 Edge at the time, so I never went for it. Now however is the right time to get back to iPhone because they've finally caught up and surpassed android in some ways. Their hardware is finally on par too

A few years ago I decided to get an iPhone. Plastic is the correct material for cell phones. Phones get dropped. Glass shatters, metal gets dented, plastic survives. I really wanted a 5C, but they were just too antiquated at the point. Ended up with an SE (2016) since it was the same size and still receiving updates at the time. The SE was super ugly, though. I got the pink one and the white bezels around the screen drove me nuts to the point that I swapped a black screen onto it (just like the pink 5C had). It looked pretty sharp after that, but not nearly as good as the vibrant 5C options.

5c was not really a failure. 5c pricing strategy made 5s more successful. Prices are relative. If you put one phone with inferior features (5c) at only $100 less than its superior counterpart, people would find the superior phone (5s) a better deal (meaning it’s cheaper) in relative terms.

I had the 5C and it was the worst iPhone I ever owned. I actually switched to Samsung for 3 years after owning one. The plastic backing used to pop off the device, leaving the internals exposed. I had that one replaced. The second I had, I dropped it from about a foot off the ground, and half the touch screen became unresponsive. Got that one replaced too. Third I had worked for about 6 months. Then one day as I was sending a text message, the screen slowly faded to black and then never worked again. Worst iPhone ever.

I LOVED my 5C. I debated over getting a 5S and a 5C. I went with the C because it was cheaper. I got the white one because I didn't like the pastels of the colors. But I loved it. I still have it. However the battery is completely dead. It was dying for a while before I finally got a 7. The plastic shell was great. Looking back, I can't believe we used phones that small. I was on Virgin though so my options were limited to what they had. I'm pretty sure they still sold old stock 5s but I still went with the C because of the color. Also I couldn't wait to get a SE because I was coming from a 4S which had 3G that didn't work at all on the Virgin/Sprint network so I was always constantly on 1x or WiFi. So getting my 5C was a breath of fresh air. It was also durable as hell. Dropped it few times and it still doesn't have a scratch. Conversely I dropped my 7 many times and never broke it. But I dropped my 15 Pro once and the screen is shattered. Go figure.

I don’t know much about the AVP, but it seems more for companies, and I believe it’s supposed to be (I don’t research), but I think it’s overall better to save your 4K, buy other things to have a better experience. 5C failed at a few hurdles, but one was most definitely the 'C stands for Cheap' feeling that I got from all aspects of it. Nobody wants the cheapest option manufacturers make, unless that's all you can afford. Rocking one of those basically immediately outed you as 'too poor to own a real iPhone'. Of course, it did have its uses as a backup or teen phone, but for most regular iPhone buyers, it just wasn't appealing.

It's worth keeping in mind from my understanding (and their sales chart shows it) that the 5C was an iphone 5 with a different housing and slightly bigger battery, better front facing camera and most importantly fixed the wonky power switch that the 5 had. That paired with the black iphone 5s black aluminum coating being incredibly prone to scratching and marring (this was replaced by space gray in the 5S and subsequent models) even by your own chart of OS updates if you factor it being an iphone 5 released a year later it still meets the support standard. I think spending so much time in the keynote talking about the 5C even though it was a tiny upgrade to the 5 was really the problem of it all. Apple couldn't just admit they did that in a plastic shell so they tried to make it it's own product. I think thats why we haven't really seen it since as well because the iphone SE recycled the 5S design (which was also the 5s design)

The 5C was a fine phone. So many people were complaining about needing a lower price, full featured iPhone. People. Also said that plastic was great, even better than metal and glass. So, Apple made one. Yeah, it didn’t do well. They did sell over 3 million. I’m not sure how many more. But it was CALLED a failure. That’s likely a major reason why people didn’t buy it

5C was and still is one of my favorites. It was a throwback to phones that you didn’t have to worry about throwing around and keeping wrapped in bubble wrap. iPhone 4 is #1, 5 is #2, 5C #3

A cheap and medium-bad iPhone can beat an excellent and expensive iPhone because there are consumers who will compromise on the price because they want the most important iPhone at the lowest price.

iPhone 5c was my first iPhone. Fast forwarding to now, I believe i’ve spent >$30000 on devices and gadgets from Apple. And I only upgraded my phone/tablet/watch/laptop/desktop every 2-4 years. I can hardly call that a failure for Apple.

It served its purpose. It put iOS in more hands. Apple didn’t sell the phones at those prices. Your carrier did through subsidies. They don’t subsidize so much anymore. Now you’re paying the real price.

The iPhone 5C in hindsight was at the very least a tested product compared to the dumpster fire that was the 6 and 6S. In general the years 2013-2015 had some of the poorest engineered smartphones ever, I wouldn't go back except for the price range and that unproven technology (foldable displays) wasn't being sold at ruinous expenses.

By the end of the school year, there were a decent amount of them people had. But I got a 5S because I knew better and wanted the better phone. And got one for free from 9to5Mac in a contest, lol.
