My first iPhone was the 5s and I always thought of it as part of the 5 generation because it kept the same design but had upgrades for the new year version. I think apple started it as a marketing strategy but dropped it after it turned out to be unsuccessful. People want the latest generation and the s version was mostly skipped over. Also after the iPhone 6 apple realized their two year cycle of revamping the phone was unreasonable because the r&d for whatever reason wasn’t keeping up so to give the appearance of innovation they dropped the s and started calling them the next model number.

My final take on this is that apple used to be able to have a big release every 2 years. However they could do the big release one year after the first gen because there was so much that they could improve. I think saying generation is also flawed. Something like this isn't binary, its fluid. I will just use "generation" below to simplify things iPhone - Gen 1 iPhone 3G - Gen 2 iPhone 3Gs - Gen 2.5 iPhone 4 - Gen 3 iPhone 4s - Gen 3.5 iPhone 5 - Gen 4 iPhone 5s - Gen 4.5 iPhone 6 - Gen 5 iPhone 6s & SE 1st Gen - Gen 5.5 2016 - Apple switches from a 2 year major update cycle to a 3 year major update cycle iPhone 7 - Gen 5.5+ iPhone X - Gen 6 iPhone Xs - Gen 6.5 Apple rebrands "R/C" lineup of phones to become the base model. Future models will be referenced as the Pro as such. Apple now abandons special naming styles (s, r, c), and every new release has a new number for simplicity. iPhone 11 Pro & SE 2nd Gen - Gen 6.5+ iPhone 12 Pro - Gen 7 iPhone 13 Pro - Gen 7.5 Apple switches back to a major update every 2 years for the new Dynamic Island iPhone 14 Pro & SE 3rd Gen - Gen 8 iPhone 15 Pro - Gen 8.5 It's really complicated and makes absolutely no sense, is the conclusion I have. However I have gotten a reverse result, we should be on iPhone 8s right now because Apple went from a big update every 2 years to every 3 years and it looks like they might be going back to a big update every 2 years again.
@nickbradley Жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the comments! I totally agree with just about everything you're saying. Those generations would make sense if 'design change' was the rule. Which I think an argument can be made for. But if you look at most of their products, for example the iPod Touch line, the name never changed. The only difference is on the back of the box and all their support articles they would add ("X" Generation) after iPod Touch. So if Apple did that with all their iPhones, by the time they start coming out with different variants, it would get confusing again. The iPhone 5S would likely be called "iPhone (7th Generation)" and the iPhone 5C something like "iPhone Color (1st generation)". The iPhone Xs would be "iPhone (12th Generation)" and the XR would be "iPhone Color (2nd Generation)". Haha who knows, it's fun to speculate.

This also applies to the SE phones, since they're a part of the existing generation/iOS when they're released. So the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all part of the 15th generation.

The iPhone 9 was skipped to celebrate apples 10 year anniversary with the iPhone X
@nickbradley Жыл бұрын
Good point. The iPhone X name does at least have some meaning to it. The iPhone 4 is the only one properly named after its generation, and the iPhone X is the only one properly named after its anniversary. 😅

Solution: in 2025 they should release the iPhone 17 with the iPhone 18 in the same generation and skip the iPhone 19 and go straight to 20
@nickbradley2 ай бұрын
@@itsjasonhere that is would work for me! Although there are some rumors the “17 Plus” will become the “17 Slim” or more likely “17 Air.” I think that gives them a good opportunity to lock in their naming strategy as iPhone, iPhone Air, iPhone Pro, and iPhone Max or Ultra - and the just drop the numbers like they’ve done for all their other products. Are we really gonna be talking about the iPhone 29 a decade from now?
@itsjasonhere2 ай бұрын
@@nickbradley I believe the rumors of the iPhone 17 slim is actually the iPhone 17 itself and the 18 will be more superior version of it. And honestly Only time will tell if the iPhone 29 will be skipped or not

i saw the video title and just wanted to say at that time apple would celebrate its 10th birthday, so they decided to skip 9 and go straight to x/10
@nickbradley3 ай бұрын
@@EiskalteLanze That’s correct. I heard somewhere that they originally wanted the X out a year earlier to reference the 10th generation, but can’t confirm that. However, since they came out with a XS a year later, ever since the 11 the name has been 1 year off (11 is the 12th anniversary) and 2 generations off (11 is the 13th generation). 😅

Overall, I think this is a pretty solid video that clearly defines your point in an effective manner, though I don't agree with some of the claims here. To preface, I think all of it is arbitrary to begin with, better phones are better no matter what they're called, but I think the checklist for an 's' phone is pretty arbitrary and shouldn't apply to the 12 and the 14 like you said they should. All the items listed in this checklist are just, having incremental improvements to the previous model while not changing the form factor. You could claim that they should be new generations, and maybe they should, but I think it compares well to the release cycle of something like the PlayStation consoles. What's the difference between a new generation of ps consoles and a mid-cycle refresh? both show incremental improvements over the previous model and have support for more features. The only difference is that the mid-cycle refresh is compatible with the previous model's games. EXCEPT that for modern generations of these consoles, the new generation is also "backwards compatible" with the previous generation! You could argue that, for the first decade or so of the iPhone's life, they did 2 year release cycles with mid-cycle refreshes in between generations. Also, aligning the iPhone naming scheme with the rest of apple's lineup is a supremely bad idea. People already get confused with differentiating those products based on just their release year, and it's more difficult to find accessories and parts for older generations because of this. I'd like to note that it's not impossible, just more difficult, which confuses non-tech people and is harmful for the market.
@nickbradleyАй бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment! I do agree this is kind of arbitrary. But as I point out, a lot of people see "iPhone 16" and they think "16th iPhone," '16th gen," or "16 years" and none of those are true. The video game console comment is one of the tougher ones for me to address, and I do plan on making a video about this eventually. But essentially smartphone and video game consoles generations are different. This is why (technically speaking) the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all part of the same (15th) generation. The 13 isn't building upon (or as advanced) as the 12 Pro Max, and yet, the 13 is part of a newer generation. And that's a very solid point about accessories, and not being able to tell the different models apart. I do think at some point, something has to give. Perhaps iPhones get cannibalized by AR products or something else, but I have a hard time imagining names likes "iPhone 29" and "iPhone 36" unless they're the release year like Samsung does. Maybe after the iPhone 17 models (19th gen), they can jump right to iPhone XX (20) and everything will be right with the world again. 😅

i HATE the way iPads are named, they can stick with the iPhones naming scheme, but no, I have to confuse people (and also myself) with how the new iPad 10th Gen, isn't better than the iPad Pro (gen something) iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3 and so on would be MUCH better than whatever companies are doing with unlabeled tech products. Ex. iPad 10 Pro iPad 10 Air iPad 10 iPad 10 Mini

@nickbradley5 ай бұрын
It is its own thing, but they're considered part of the existing generation when they're released. Which makes sense, since they have a lot of the same components as the current flagship when they're released, just in an older body style. So for example, the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all considered part of the 15th generation.

According to your definition of an "s" phone all the pro models should be considered "s" phones making them a different generation
@nickbradley4 ай бұрын
Hmm. Interesting. I do think I need to explore a little more how Apple defines a generation. However, I am basing this off things Apple has said in the past, and what all the different wiki’s say. I will also say the Pro’s are different from the S’s in the sense that, the non-pros don’t build off the pros. Meaning, the iPhone 6 has all the features of a 5S and builds off it. The 7 has the features of a 6S and builds off it. But a 12 doesn’t build off the 11 pro, it builds off the 11.
