Recently I took my 2020 Limited in for it's 35K oil change and the tech noticed that my front left and right rear shocks were leaking fluid! Much to my surprise since my 4Runner has never seen any off road use! My local Toyota dealership honored my extended 10 yr 100,000 mile Bumper to Bumper warranty and replaced all 4 X-REAS shocks. If I didn't have the extended warranty my total cost to repair would have been $3,700 bucks!

the best part about xreas is when you delete it and install a proper suspension like Bilstein, OME etc.

I like the Xreas on my 4Runner - it really gives it a sporty feel on road for being a heavy SUV. But I definitely hold back on driving over bumps or going faster than I should if driving in a dirt parking lot for various events. Some times it feels like I need to drive it very daintily to make sure I don't cause that leaking. My last vehicle was the Tacoma, which I eventually added the TRD Pro Bilstein suspension kit. With that official suspension (and a rear sway bar), you had the best of both worlds in terms of Speed and Comfort, on road and off road. Low to no roll, and you didn't have to worry about breaking your suspension cause it was overbuilt.

Thanks very much. For off road driving, which technology is more effective against body roll, KDSS or X-Reas? I mean for off road driving comfort. For capability, KDSS seems better due to more wheel travel. For comfort though I have a verdict that X Reas might be better.

KDSS great for on road stability and fast off roading X for great overall driving experience and increased articulation when crawling.
@glow4417
@glow4417 4 ай бұрын
Actually that is not correct. KDSS is for increased articulation off-road, with a more firm ride on road -- greatly reducing body roll (also reducing some vibrations on-road). X-reas is for vibrations and uneven surfaces on and off-road - and does nothing to increase wheel articulation. Actually Xreas would be better for higher speed off-roading than KDSS, but KDSS would be better for slow articulation in AWD mode. KDSS is actually not good for faster off-roading, unless a switch is installed to allow the system to work over 12 mph. KDSS system does not unlock the sway bars unless under 12mph and in 4WD.

The explanation is not correct: at 1'47" it says that when the opposite wheels move IN phase, it utilizes the central control absorber the most to help reducing body roll. But when the vehicle is cornering, the opposite wheels move actually OUT of phase!

in 2007 Toyota introduced the FJ Cruiser TRD edition (Toyota RACING Division) version of the FJ as a Halo Car. Not only did Toyota sell it to the general public, they sent a film crew with the ACTUAL publicly-available version of the TRD to the off-road high speed professional competition events that year. (That documentary of the competitions run by the TRD FJ is still available.) And that Toyota-sponsored FJ Cruiser, using only Bilstein shocks, same as the ones shod on the public version, WON some of those races! That is what this is all about isn't it?, keeping a Cruiser/4Runner firmly planted in high speed multiple-potholed varying terrain conditions? Now the FJ and 4Runner, up to 2024, are identical under the body. So why did Toyota, studying the leaky shocks that have been plaguing GM's magnetic ride platform since it's inception in the Vette and other high end GM products in 2004, choose to copy this leaky system, AND add MORE cylinders to leak from (the center canisters) in what is supposed to be the most reliable first and foremost offroad-capable Toyota? I'll be returning to race-proven Bilsteins when the leaky red X-Ray shocks turn black on the outside from the shock absorber fluid that is supposed to stay INSIDE the shock. Shame on you Toyota for a taking simple off-road racing suspension solution and making it too complex and expensive to repair when it fails.

I searched ‘xreas review’ in youtube and 9 out of top 10 video result sorted by view count is about removing or replacing it. Can I get a comment on it officially from Toyota? Why don’t people like it and why has Toyota stuck with it for so long?

I doubt toyota will respond. Only thing I can think of is that the trim levels that use it are expected to be used for offroad as must as maybe a sr5 4x4 or trd trim level.

How do you fill it with hydraulic oil?
@klaus5686
@klaus5686 Жыл бұрын
You don't. It is a pre-pressurized system that has a seal that will break once the lines are screwed in to a certain point of the shock absorbers. As soon as the lines are disconnected, they lose pressure and they have to be thrown away and new ones put in. If your shock are blown out or you take this system apart, it is very expensive to fix. I own a shop and have only replaced one of these with the stock setup. All the other customers elected to replace all 4 pieces with Fox shocks.

We have 350,000 mi on our ‘08 Limited with no leaks. The last time I asked the mechanic to check, and he said it’s fine, I replied that’s impossible’ lol. So he took me out in the shop and showed me with the 4R on the lift. He said, I would’ve guessed this vehicle had 75-80,000 on it, by the looks of your undercarriage, until I saw your odometer.

What they won’t tell you is that X-REAS lasts about 75,000 miles before starting to leak. And that’s for a totally on-road vehicle. Pray it happens under warranty. Mine happened just after it expired and Toyota wouldn’t help. It costs about $4000 to fix. It is very easy to replace with regular shocks and, after doing that, I personally can’t tell the difference in how it rides. A huge (and rare) disappointment from Toyota.

Terrible system. Leakage and premature failure is very common and it is very expensive to repair. At 60k miles our 2016 4Runner is on its 3rd set of front shocks. City driving only, never off-roaded. The stealership wants over 2k to install 2 front shocks.
