How thick can stucco finishes be applied?
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.

Stucco finishing secrets, it’s only secret as even professional plasterers don’t know it can be done.
I’m talking about applying a finish coat that is more than an eighth inch thick and knowing how to stop that thickness from cracking or spider cracking like an egg.
For those who have no clue what “Spider Cracking is?” finish coats are supposed to only be a one-eighth inch thick, or they crack the big time.
If one applies it as thick as I did in this video, we open the applied finish with a sponge float, allowing the finish coat to breathe so that it does not spider crack when it does set.
Things that make you go, hmmm.
This video below at the end shows what I’m talking about spider cracking or checking.
• Stucco and Concrete bo...
This video explains stucco finishing and the secret dos and don’ts of stucco finishes.
Why do I call this knowledge a secret?
Few people understand finishing with stucco coats, including licensed stucco contractors, unless they have many years of using them and guaranteeing them for life. Few do.
Save yourself ten years of hands-on training and listen to what is important in stucco applications.
We’re showing something I don’t encourage folks to apply a color finish thicker than one-eighth of an inch to almost a quarter to a half-inch.
To add accelerators to stucco color coats, really takes some time in the trade.
But at the risk of sounding cocky, we are masters of accelerators whether in base coat or finishes.
Color coat finishes are engineered to be laid on only one-eighth inch thick.
Applying a color finish on this thick will cause the hairline to shatter and crack.
Thus we had no choice but to add accelerators.
• Stucco and Concrete bo... stucco, concrete, or plastering bonding agents.
• Resurface uneven concr... Resurface uneven concrete with cement plaster.
• Resurface a concrete d... How to re-finish a driveway.
• Repair uneven concrete Fix concrete walkways or sinking sidewalks.

@@StuccoPlastering I went to work for an engineering company in 2005. I was a mason and plasterer for 40 years. I still do a little work but have too many houses to take care of. I never thought that at 70 + I would be this busy. I am renovating my parents house and re skimming the ceilings in the kitchen,dining room and hall. I had a roll of heavy dryvit mesh so I embedded it in durabond 90 and will skim it and smooth trowel it out. I use a lot of bonding agent. I really love plaster weld but no one in our area handles it anymore. Like your weld crete I liked it because you could see where the bonding agent is on. Thank you for all of your videos . Hey master plaster, I see a lot of your instruction films, thanks for making them. I have a question, why don't you throw little blobs on the finished layer, and then ush them more or less flat with the trowel? Greatings from a dutch constructor
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Morning Tom, excellent question, my friend, In this video, I was doing what the past Plastering contractor had done. The finish coat had not dried, nor was I prepared to wait a day for this to happen. So had I thrown blobs or even a dash finish, that pressure would have created craters in the still wet or soft finish coat. Which would have meant I did not fully understand what the materials I chose to use were capable of doing and what was considered a cardinal sin. As it was, I was using a finish coat against what it's specifically engineered for. Like all trades, even our life itself depends on our ability to bend without breaking or improvising without abusing integrity. Merry Christmas, brother, to you and yours and Happy hoildays. kirk brilliant work ,i do prefer the flat finish ,looks easy to do ,but i know its probably the hardest ,its all the rage in scotland just now covering old and new houses with flat finish render, its called k ,rend they apply it and then scratch it off ,do you know anything about this material , it looks superb during daylight , but at night when artificial light on you can see ever lump and bump .your bang right kirk about time in , a,t,b you, yours

Hi Stevie, yea, I have heard of K Rend many times; however, it's not sold here in the USA, but K Rend is one of the UK's biggest sellers. We have stucco material with the same ingredients that you or I can't tell the difference. The same principle applies, here old world charm is liked, so if a homeowner askes to achieve a perfectly flat, true, and level wall in all directions within an eighth or a quarter-inch void. I can easily do that. However, my cost will be much higher. I'm an expert with a 10 or 15-foot rod. We did a lot of back substrates that were to receive thin bricks to our brown coat. It took two guys often to achieve this desired effect and on two levels of the scaffold. But I felt, no problemo. Kirk Giordano Plastering

HI Kirk. LOve the vids thanks for doing them. I have exterior walls just like this finish and I want to get it all to a smooth finish. Whats the best way to do this? Best. Brian
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Brian, Pressure washing is your only option, as sandblasting and grinding release much silica into the surrounding areas to be inhaled. It's similar in nature to inhaling asbestos. After you remove what's failing, there are many ways to skim coat first then add a finish coat. As it takes years to learn this, I recommend you call a plastering company in your area. Or type in how to smooth out a texture. 😉 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Hey Guarduck dude, been there myself a few times. The worst was 10 years ago I was supposed to reroof a tall house with fifty-year shingles. I went with my entire crew to a weekend home, and the next morning the waterfall was frozen solid in the morning, I thought that I've never seen it freeze. It was 27 degrees outside. By the time we got started, it had warmed to 38 degrees. I carried many bundles up the two story ladder just too freaking warm up. Hit a finger with a hammer, and it would fall off. I hate cold weather. Wish I could live in tropical weather say 80 to 90 degrees year-round. Man, that would be living. "Pancake blob job". its semantics. but I would call it a heavy orange peel or heavy knock down. Nothing wrong with that texture. Also about transitioning. Lets say you got a california hot patch. You think you got everything right. Texture it and on the seems of the paper it slightly bumps up. You can tell the california hot patch is there if you look real close. Its not great. But are you really standing there staring at it? Your brain knows where to look because you put it there. Everyone else is (not)playing wheres waldo. Give it 6 months and your brain didnt just True and level it. It raised it up 10minutes after you finished. If you actually tried hard and its not perfect its probably good enough and your brain is playing games with you on either side of that sliding scale. Ive been in that situation and someone else says "I think it looks good I cant tell where you patched it" and I think to myself thats because youre wrong and start pointing it out. But 6 months later I intentionally go back to look and its fine and theres no way it cured and self leveled itself.

@@coachdee5162 Yeah the mindset of someone who hires someone to do something they do not do and then questions what is being done. I mean when I hire someone I just let them do it the way that they do it. I determine if I am choosing the right person before hiring them then let them work. I don't like when someone looks at the job when it is half done and starts complaining about something that is not even an issue. It is like we are not done. No it won't look like that when we are finished.They do not know the process and if we listened to them they will be unhappy with the final result and complain. I had a friend who made eyeglasses and people would try and tell him how to do it. He said if he listened to them they would be seeing in both directions at the same time. You get the best job when you let someone who knows what to do does it the way the know. There are the ones that question the steps because they are cheap. One lady didn't want to buy anymore materials. She wanted to paint the brown coat. No final stucco. When I told her you can color coat and not have to paint it she did the math. These kind of people are the reason I am ready to get out of this business. If I learned anything throughout the years it is that cheap people are trouble. They make the job more difficult to do. They complain more than anyone else. They take their time when it is time to pay. They try and get a discount and the end result is not always what was agreed upon. They try to sneak extra things on for the same price and don't like you when you have them sign a change order. Better to not take the job then to get surprised. They are scared of a four letter word. LIEN.

@@StuccoPlastering great reply. I'm doing a small job of stucco replacement under a couple of sliding glass door thresholds. The stucco color coat was originally, by the builder, applied directly to the foundation without a scratch coat and as you can imagine the entire foundation needs to be reworked. Plus, there were 3 coats of paint applied to the "stucco" and later repaired with another stucco job. I'm having to remove all of the former work to get back to the concrete of the foundation and work it up from there. I think I can handle this job myself based upon your info. I wouldn't think of trying to stucco an entire wall on my home though. Thanks Kirk.
