Smooth Stucco installs avoid hairline cracking.
Folks, we are located in Oakland, CA.

In this video, we explain smooth finish stucco and hairline spider cracking? I don’t advise smooth stucco finishes anymore.
Why? Two smooth coats of a fine stucco finish on any exterior stucco basecoat will usually crack?
Why? They are applied with Portland cement finish stucco.
This video does indeed show the smoothest stucco finish? However, there are issues with this finish; see this to understand why we only apply smooth sand finishes. • Smooth stucco
Unlike our Portland cement, which expands, swells like a bullfrog, then the dam breaks, and blam, spider cracking over 99 percent of the wall, if you look super close.
If you apply fiberglass mesh netting to the entire home, the stucco finish may take still hairline or get spider-checking with the first rain or damp weather.
If you really wish for a smooth stucco finish on your home.
I advise hydrating the basecoat for at least two weeks while moist curing it.
That means using your garden hose and saturating the walls down so that they no longer hold water so that the water runs off the walls.
Do this about 5 times within the two-week curing time.
Why? The rainwater or hose water will make the stucco swell or expand, and then when dryer conditions return, they will hairline or crack.
This assures the best one can do before the final application of the smooth stucco finish.
As the first rains, the dual finish will expand, and then when the curing begins, this finish is sealed because of the steel trowel. Thus, hairline or shatter or spider cracking will occur.
This has nothing to do with the proper applications or hydration of the base coats.
• Repair bad stucco patc... Repair bad stucco patches.
• Stucco finish over mol... Transform a wood house into stucco.

kibbles and bits, if I have dried stucco on my clothes on the drive home, I will have to inhale the lye and silica that's on my clothes, as every move will send that stuff into the air I have to breathe. It's bad enough I have to ride with my brother Lou, who thinks he is the real-life Pig-pen from the Charlie Brown Peanuts cartoon. Lye and dried silica are no joke.

Good evening Lewis Hunt, here a tip my brother, Invest is a quality radio, where you can insert your phone into and play what you like, sing along and learn to relax. If you just play the radio, all one here's in our area is how small our wieners are and how much it cost to be a big man with a big..... the point is the radio is cool but the commercials suck. We insert our phone and listen to what we like, which makes the day go by relieving unnecessary stress. Plus having a harmonious crew makes a huge difference. Tell em fellas we are all gonna have a harmonious day today aren't we? We all know what we have to do so, be happy and do things without me having to tell you what to do. I sometimes had to make this speech when I had a lot of guys, worked like a charm usually.😉 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Base, Screed, FHA, or weep screed, however you prefer to call it, is not for expansion! It is simply place below the bottom plate so water will weep out the bottom between the paper and cement. Secondly it acts as the ground or termination point for your stucco edge. Other than that, you're entertaining to watch and I respect your knowledge. I was a lather for a long time ;)

This was so helpful to watch. I'll be working on the siding of my house. It has rock pebbly stucco on the top part, then wood on bottom, then the concrete stone tiles on foundation part. All of it will be changed to cover the pebbly stucco, removing the wood boards to make one fluent stucco siding. Then the foundation part I'll be putting on real stones to give it that country cottage look. I want to make a smooth stucco siding in white. I was told to brush off the pebbles as much as is loose and then I can scratch coat over top of it. Then where the wood was I'll put on paper, lath, scratch coat and build it up to match thickness of upper old stucco siding. Then I'll do a smooth fluent joining of all stucco together. Finally, I'll finish it with a smooth stucco siding. What is the paper I should use underneath the lath? I was looking at using the quickrete mason mix type S mortar for the scratch coat and going over the old stucco. I thought I'd paint it in the end a white tone. I'm trying to keep the cost very minimal. If I used a smooth concrete mix would that still be fine if I seal it with a good paint product after?

With the K- rend in the UK we leave the gear proud on the wall and scrape back the finish when it tightens up in the afternoon. We scrape it back to the white plastic angle beads with a I bar scraper so they are exposed. That way you get a brilliantly textured flat wall with no ghost lines or colour variation.

Hello Kraig Johnstone, my fellow plasterer from the UK, there are many ways to skin a cat.😉 I have tried them all and then some. Cheers to all our plastering pals in the UK. All know the UK is where lime plastering has been used for many centuries, here in the USA, it barely 150 years.
@kraigjohnstone3217
@kraigjohnstone3217 3 жыл бұрын
@@StuccoPlastering Yes you’re correct but traditional lime plaster is dying out now sadly here in the UK, there are many solid wall homes with lime plaster walls but most plasterers here in the Uk use gypsum for speed and so we are in a state where only 1 in 10 plasterers would know what to do with lime putty. I have understanding and use hydraulic lime with cement when rendering to add flexibility and cracks will heal themselves, for example but if I turned up at a solid stone cottage that the customer wanted internally plastering I would explain that they need lime plaster and to call a specialist. It’s sad however that many plasterers wouldn’t do that and use gypsum which doesn’t breath like lime does and the customer ends up with lots of damp issues ! I personally am very interested in an old English tradition in the south of England called pargeting.. it’s fantastic what can be achieved with lime putty and for anyone who’s not familiar with pargeting I recommend you check out a guy called Ian Warren as his work is amazing as there isn’t many people left that can do it he is the best in England and you’d need a big bank account to commission him I reckon! Cheers for the reply Kirk and yes cheers to all the plasterers over the pond in the USA 🇺🇸

Hey Kirk, I am building a house in Santa Barbara with, of course a Santa B type finish. My stucco guy is an experienced local guy ...he is saying he leaves 2 weeks after Scratch and 3 weeks after Brown before he does the Finish. My question is....is there a time limit for how long you can leave the plaster before the finish goes on? As there is lots of dust etc on site being kicked up and for various other reasons I am thinking that the finish could go on ...maybe 60 days after brown coat ...so that much of the cracking is also done. But, not sure that is OK. What do you think?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, the longer, the better. Any dust or dirt that accumulates will be washed off when they hydrate the walls before the color coat application. Will your finish still hairline? If I was a betting man, I'd wager it will, as no matter how long you wait, for the stucco level to cure or drop the ph level to say under 8 when it rains, the Santa Barbera finish coat or coats will now hydrate and become stronger. This will expand the portland, then when dryer conditions appear, the portland will shrink, thus chatter or hairline, as this is what portland cement finishes naturally do.🍾 Personally, I believe a few imperfections, such as discoloration, adds character or charm to homes.😉

Hello Julio, the first and second coat needs to be hydrated at least three times before the finish coat, This means keep wetting those coats until the water stops absorbing and sheds down the wall, this expands and strengthen the portland cement. Thus when the finish coat is to be applied that won't hairline. It's all about technique. Cheers.😉

I meshed the joints and coated them with durabond just as I would finishing drywall. I used plastic corner bead at fornot and back corner of the mud room exterior. I hand troweled stucco base coat over the Densglass. ( NO wire or mesh) I have not done a finish coat yet but it looks great so far. I live in North Dakota ant the temps vary greatly. The base coat is holding firm over the Densglass even after 4 months of rain / snow and ice. I plan on growling a color coat next spring. What will be the outcome by skipping the standard steel chicken wire and steel corners? Does it really increase the depth of the color that much?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Good evening Mekrabb, sure, my friend.😉 Colored finish stucco was discovered or invented by a company named La Habra way back in 1926; they had about 30 earth tone finishes. When you used their 2-pound color boxes and added them to a 94 sack of finish plaster, these colors were often solid in appearance or as solid as one could expect with a cementitious finish. I had added up to 15 pounds of color pigmentations when folks wanted customer colors such as red, blue, or whatever colors. In fact, for well over ten years, LaHabra offers lifestyle colors in which up to ten-pound bags of color pigmentations are added to one 94 pound bag of finished cement plaster. These almost always have discolored, as too much pigmentation is needed. Good evening Candy darling, no doubt they wet the color coat down before 7 days. Color coats have portland cement in them. I tell folks to hydrate the base coat but not the color coat for at least 7 days anyway. As for hydrating a colored finish too soon will bleach it like pouring Clorox on blue jeans. @StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Joe, not really, as it's the force of the trowel that moves the water necessary to apply the stucco that is moved around, which causes discoloration, sort of like pouring Clorox on Bluejeans. With all earth-tone stock colors, theirs little notice with discoloring with all other textures and finishes, such as sand or textures. However, with smooth finishes, there's always a chance for discoloring ghosting or bleeding of colors. The darker the base coat as in 200 gray base coat, and a choice of Lifestyle colors instead of a two-pound bag of color, color bag pigmentations can weigh up to a 10-pounds bag or more. The chances are more likely to get some discoloration. I suggest a coat of La Habras, "acrylic Image" just in the cracks, or you can caulk tham. Caulking like the acrylic Image will flex. Where another coat of stucco may continue to hairline.

Howdy Captain Zoom, not really, in fact, to seal a Santa Barbara smooth mission finish would create cracking as now the lime can't move when vibrations occur, vibrations occur constantly.💃

Kirk does this mean you can not use any penetrating sealers on stucco ? I tried doing it like a cement floor finish but my wall cracked I'm wondering if it was the sealer that caused it ??

Hi Kirk, just got new stucco installed and have tons of hairline cracks. Wondering what I should do before painting? Will priming protect cracks long term?

Evening Patric, excellent question, first of all, relax or don't panic. This is natural, the stucco is going through the curing stage. If it were me, I would encourage the stucco to continue cracking. How to do this is to hydrate it for up to three weeks this just means taking your water hose and saturate the walls until they no longer absorb water, thus the water just drips off. Then after this process, buy some Mor-Flexx, caulking, this calling has sand it, and caulk them. Now you're ready to paint. It won't re-crack after this.🍻

@@StuccoPlastering I don’t want to give the contractor a hard time, but is that something he should take care of. There a ton of hairlines, no credit card size ones though 👍

Good evening Patric, of course, it's something the contractor needs to take care of. If you don't call and inform him, he won't learn. You owe it to yourself and him to help him out by allowing him to come back and see the cracks, then caulk the cracks. I did a job on a block fence that I knew would crack. I told the owner in two weeks after he hydrated it that I would return and caulk the cracks. I applied 3 to 4 inches in some areas to create a radius I knew would crack where three credit cards could fill. This is our job to understand what cement can and can't do. When my stucco wall was completed, I went back and used about 3 full tubes of Mor-Flexx caulking in the cracks. The owner painted the wall, and cracks were not visible plus, as the wall moves, this quality caulking moves with it.😏

@@StuccoPlastering thank you for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it. I informed him, but he doesn’t seem too concerned. Just prime and paint he says. Ill send him a couple of your videos to help him out 😆. Thanks again for the advice and taking the time to teach

How different is this workflow from doing a liquid acrylic fortified water proofing base coat over concrete blocks. They call for 1 gal of liquid to 50lb of cement. Seems to me thats not enough liquid to even congeal. Your product looks like its 3x as wet if not 4x.
