Carmella Taitt is a 20-year-old college student and natural hairstylist from Brooklyn, New York. She has clients both at George Mason University in Virginia and back home in Brooklyn. Even though her hair braiding business is technically a side hustle, Carmella sees it as more of a “spiritual practice” and likes to offer student discounts to give back to her community.

She offer student discounts ? Like whyyyy? Her price is already low to begin with .. And she said 40% off .. I can’t! . We gotta help her y’all! She’s really doing hair for FREE .. none of her time is being compensated

Doing hair is a GREAT side hustle but sis raise your prices and stop offering discounts. What you make a month you can make in a week. $300 should easily be 2 heads! I love that black business owners love helping out a friend and considering what others can afford BUT i have learned that the ppl who claim they cannot afford your services will then turn around and blow money on other things they do not need. She can still make money while offering a competitive price. PUT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS FIRST SIS. #keephustling

@@luckycharms960 it's a bigger lesson to teach your community that we all need to value ourselves and pay each other what we're worth, but I do see your point. There's a way to respectfully explain that this is your time (the most valuable resource) so you cannot afford to accept less.

Yes, echoing what everyone is saying, you really should be charging more. Something that takes 10hrs of your time (ESPECIALLY something as labour intensive standing up and braiding) should cost AT LEAST 200 on its own! Do not value yourself for less than 20 an hour. You are an amazing hustler and I only wish you more prosperity as you grow your business! Keep at it lady

That’s cool she does that especially on college campus I bet there’s a major need for it. Although that $200-300 seems really low to me. I always thought it was a good $100-200 for braids for natural Hair. I’m picturing her rates may be lower just because...it’s a college setting and not everyone can drop $200-300 on hair, but she needs to make sure she’s charging for her time as well especially if it’s 5-10 hours per client. I wonder if people tip too like you should for a hair service?!?!? Regardless, I thought this was a cool idea, but she should treat it more like a “business” in the sense of her pricing structure should could easily keep the same # of clients per month but just adjust pricing to get ) $100-200 more per month.

I feel okay speaking to this, I’m 21 and have a few different side hustles while in college and church out around $500 per month. I do literal market research surveys, and with that I just am confused because I’d expect this girl to make more than me. Extra: I wonder if she can buy those products she uses in bulk to save money?

She can definitely charge more, HOWEVER, I’m so happy she is trying to work with students and low income people. It’s hard when you can’t afford to get your hair done when like she stated, it’s of high importance for the black community. I think that she should continue as she’s doing and her friends and family should give her a tip if they can afford more that month. Maybe they got a nice Christmas card from grandma and can afford to pay 200 that month but next month they only have $130. Also after college she should definitely increase her rates. Hair can be so expensive and I’m always so happy to hear when stylist are working with low income clients but those same clients should be open to paying more when they make more.

@@genwilson7741Hi, I'm Carmella! This is exactly my motivation for helping people with lower income! As someone who knows what it is like to have a lower income and still want to keep up my appearance, I'm able to empathise with other black women who are in that same position. Being blessed with the talent of doing hair allows me the opportunity to truly give back to my community, while also considering everyone's different circumstances. Once I graduate and my clientele increases, I plan to adjust my rates accordingly. Thank you so much for perfectly understanding where I am coming from! Have a blessed day!

This was me in college. I didn't do extensions, but I did loc maintenance for men and women. It helped me keep money in my pocket. I wasn't rich, but it helped being in college and not having a lot of financial backing sometimes things can get hard. I recommend always having a side hustle. I only stopped after I started dating my husband senior year of college because he didn't want "No man laying up under his woman getting their hair washed" lmbo! He said he'd pay my phone bill, buy my books etc...so I wouldn't have to do that anymore and he did. Been happily married 10 years now, but that hair hustle helped me out back when I needed it.

I hope she reads these comments, because it sounds like she could be charging a LOT more. It's understandable to charge less when you're just starting out, or doing your family/friend's hair, but if every job costs you at least 16USD, and you're only taking home ~200-300USD each month, there's A LOT of room to charge more for your services.

It’s not that much for students. And if she wants to do it that way she can. There’s a lot of students that even paying 60% is out of their budget and I think making these things accessible to people of color is more important.

@Michael I mean if this was strictly for her income but again she has the choice to do whatever she wants to do. And I think creating a loving and beautiful community for black people to finally enjoy their hair and feel like it can create different windows of opportunity for shining different aspects of their personality… All of that is a lot more important to her and I think right now it’s really important to a lot of people. So maybe instead of focusing on the money part of it… Maybe support what she’s doing for the community of people that She is both a part of and helping

@@raynamaldonado1058 at the end of the day you are right she can charge what she wants to charge but it is somewhat obvious that her side hustle is not really profitable unless she is only doing 2 heads per month. At minimium it will take her 6 hours to do one head of braids (that is a fast braider) $300/month / (6hours/headx2heads/month)= is only $25/ hour. plus she said she has no car and it costs her $16 \/ head on average not to mention the additional time needed to prep the braiding hair and cleaning up.

Dont understand why people are obsessed with labelling their hardwork as "hustle" the definition for which seems to be as follows hustler= "a person who employs fraudulent or unscrupulous methods to obtain money; swindler". Glorifying unethical behaviour may be i am misaing something.
