Great video and great interview, loved it. The "Bounty", in the 70's there was a weatherman here in the Uk called Glynn Christian (descendent of Fletcher Christian) and he told a different story of the mutiny in which Fletcher Christian was a "hot head" and that Captain Bligh was the reasonable guy. mmm. Here in the East Riding of Yorkshire and man called John Harrison invented the maritime watch, essential for accurate navigation. Once the watch was approved copies were made, and one of those copies the K2, used on the Bounty, is on display at the Greenwich Maritime museum, as are the original Harrison watches.

Hello James, I fell asleep last night listening to your story on this! Not from boredom let me assure you! I am a night owl so my few previous nights of insomnia caught up with me! This morning I am finishing listening! On this July 4th, Thank you for your past Service to Our Country! Today we Reflect on All who fought and served to make Our Freedoms Possible! Both of my and my wife's immigrant ancestors, Fought in the American Revolution War! My Irish ancestor Survived! My wife's English Ancestor unfortunately was a POW, who died in a Northern Prison from Smallpox! We gave Serious thoughts about Flying our flag upside down since our Beloved Country is in such Distress! But Our Patriotism in our Hearts, could just not allow us to to do it! So Old Glory will still Fly High and Proud today at our home! Wishing All a Safe and Happy Independence Day today! Let Freedom RIng!!!🇺🇲 Stanley and Donna NE GA mtns.

As an ex sailor, now solo mum, I’m so warmed by your journey.. fuck, how I found my way onto boats as a massage therapist-a long and entangled journey in intself! Now as I avoid cooking dinner whilst watching this, u have no idea..bro, I made it to Isla de cocos, and due to the generosity of our boss boat owner; we got to dive w those amazing animals under the surface. It’s where I had my first experience of a big ass blue fin tuna the size of a car whoosh past me, whilst diving a rock of hundreds of circling sharks. A moment in time sketched into my memory. That fish, blew us all away. So humbling. AND During the night, we sounded out those illegal mother fuckn fishing boats. And due to our high tech, we blasted them with our high lights and sonar and chased those fuckers out of the area-I’m so lucky I happened to be on night watch at that time, so I got to see our captain acting above n beyond to preserve that area. So magical, so hardcore. Next stop we did was Galapagos. Due to full moon, n the spawning, the viz was shit. And hence so greatful for our moments to drop down into the depths around cocos and feel sharks-like, hundreds of them! You’re giving me flashbacks of my previous life foot loose n fancy free.. Fuck, I’m so greatful. Wishing to get back on the ocean in our ocean town so my boys can receive the precious learnings that the wild ocean has to offer… Happened to stumble across your channel during lockdown, so binge watched the whole love story. But I found u via the link “Things i learnt from sinking my boat” Please keep sharing your fails. “Fail harder” my dance teacher told me, coz we don’t learn nuttin unless we put our nuts on the line. U may reel in the views w all your bikini clad, hotties; but I’m here to learn from you and all your glorious transparent fuck ups. Sending love from NZ

Excellent to know the Captain James and the sailing skilled adventurer! Thank you and well done. As a side note Irma Christian wrote the Pitcairn Cook Book. Just watched SEASPIRACY and was blown away (sailors pun) a real eye opener on so many levels. From an environmental standpoint the seas health has more of an impact than most people think. Seems many of the organizations that claim to be environmentalists are just feel good marketing shouldering a major conflict of interest. It appears that humans will end up fishing themselves into a global environmental disaster that will only be realized when it’s too late. A must sea (see)

James - what a great story and an awesome journey. On a positive note, Petit has a technology from Sweden that will replace the ablative coatings that you discussed. I actually worked on fouling release coatings years ago. It's a very difficult problem but there are some evolving solutions. TBT has been illegal for more than 2 decades now - you are right about the marinas and their dead floors from the ablative coatings. The heavy commercial sector has been testing these environmental solutions. Selektope is the technology. There is a ton of research in this area. I have worked on innovative technology projects over my career. On another note - we sponsor Ocearch - this group is one of the most advanced Shark research groups. Lots of work being done in this area as well.

I am hopeful of what comes out. Better than their Trinidad I have put on a Hatteras, close as you can get to all copper. Wood hull so still using copper soaked in, asphalt, pine tar. Still using copper as polishing ( now Azko Nobel's) so it isn't wearing off like ablative. The end could be a bioskin, we are just not there yet.

James, you and I have similar life story arcs!. I too was a Submariner out of charleston, SC as a Fire Control Tech and stood SONAR, Torpedo Room, and Helmsman/Planesman/Lookout Watches. My Boat, USS James Monroe SSBN-622B was the very first one in Kings Bay. After Active Duty, I went to a marina and left a 3x5 card with my name advertising that I was a PADI-trained Advanced Open-water SCUBA Diver looking to crew a sailboat. I got to sail a 32' Herrschoff Ketch from Beaufort, SC to Beaufort, NC. Got seasick, but after two days I enjoyed my time on the boat. Afterward, I went to school in NY for Electrical Engineering Technology and my first job after was a field service tech working on computer power systems (generators, frequency converters & UPS systems) for large data centers in Canada, USA & Mexico. A year later I worked as a manufacturing engineer designing and building diesel generators. My next career move was into the semiconductor industry as a field service engineer working on PVD & CVD Systems. That led me Silicon Valley into global product support in Europe, N. America, and throughout Asai, then manufacturing engineering over a 35-year career. I am currently working as a technical writer in Pennsylvania. I have been following you, Gone with the Wynns, Sailing Zatara, and a number of other sailing vlogs. I want to get into living full-time on a catamaran. You are living the life!

I was even late to my tennis because I was intrigued with your interview. I have watched some of your vids especially with Plucky, what a character. I'm impressed you actually care about the environment, nice to see that kind of consciousness. Seaspiracy is a must see, I thought it was hoky at first but what he unveils and shows is reality, you might not like the conclusion personally. Nice to see you care about sentient beings, where do you draw the line as far as consuming them? Is there any difference in eating lobster, tuna, dolphin, whale? I really like your vids and the info you readily share. Glad you are able to make this gig work for you.

Great stories James! The level of effort taken in Kenya over conservation isn't something I really appreicated until I lived there. Examples - they *burnt* $20million of seized ilegal ivory. If you are found in a national park with a firearm the rangers can shoot you on sight. Every Black Rhino is followed by a group of rangers who are actually heavily armed soldiers with grenades and assault rifles etc to protect them. Incidentally Bligh (Captain of the Bounty) made it 3618 miles to Timor (not Britain). They were in an overloaded boat, with just a few inches of freeboard, and survived 47 days on 40g of bread a day, with no charts. Bligh continued in RN service, at the battle of Copenhagen he was able to see Nelson's "I see no ships" moment when he disobeyed orders and could have called it out but didn't allowed Nelson's signal and ruse to continue leading to the victory. It's not actually clear that he was that much of a tyrant - he arranged 3 watches so his crew could get more sleep and Fletcher Christian (the leader of the mutiny) was an old family friend of his. All in all rather wierd.

With your floors, I believe that the plywood is good but the hardwood flooring that is glued onto the plywood is bad. Anyways, rip some strips of the wood you want and glue it on. You can also glue and pin nail the boards onto the plywood. Anyways, that's how they build cedar strip kayaks and canoes in the Pacific Northwest as you probably already know. Do that and your good to go. You can even do that job yourself supper easily.

Great story. Great life. Imagine all the envious scoundrels who don't get it and can't let go of their scheduled life of meaningless hustles, conformity, and materialism? He's had more success at living life than 99.9% of the frustrated people out there (trying to hang on to their baggage while sailing upwind) while still anchored. Some people drag anchor in life and then complain about their average speed. James just told the story of how to live life like The Kerouac figures who were always on the move. This life story shows a very good start to a richer life ahead. I'm sure the sails will have to be adjusted during the next 32 years. The wind, if cleverly captured provides free fuel to move a boat: an obvious statement, but also loaded with metaphorical parallels to how James lived his life (sailing down wind without capsizing). A life like James has lived...is really quite easy if you let the wind blow your boat. James was smart not to get captured too long in a marriage. It takes wisdom and patience and some mistakes to balance a life (boat). Never thought James would sell his Oyster...never. The next boat will be interesting.

@@thelastpirate You're on a good path. Some how, podcasting manages to be far more entertaining then the polished produced reality TV shows? It's more real than the fictional characters on TV. Most people who spend any time in the military typically have 10 times the amount of adventures as a person of the same age who never spent any time in the military.

@@FreeAmerica-sc9hu I suspect that's why people join up to hand their freedom to a bureacracy: they are serving their own wanderlust-adventurism. It's really not public service...it's always been self service. Controlled self service. Most can't imagine how that's true, but it is. The confusion comes from refusing to admit conformity is selfishness: the need to conform and have others tell you what your worth and where your gonna go and for how long. Eric Fromm calls this running to Unfreedom. Fear of freedom.

@@jimbeam7160 you are so in right field on this subject. You couldn't be so much further from the truth.

@@FreeAmerica-sc9hu Nope. I'm in left field. All Government service is selfish. It has nothing to do with altruism or being selfless. You needed an uniform. You needed to get lost in a sea of uniforms. You needed discipline and rank to submit to "dominance and submission" as a way of losing any authentic virtue. You don't understand yourself. You've internalized the idea that your own selfishness (service) is actually proof of your own sublimated altruism.....when in fact, you resolving your own existential crisis while seeking an identity in which the Gov acts as a father figure to a child. You're arguing with Eric Fromm's thesis (Unfreedom and the need to avoid responsibility for yourself). Study The Authoritarian Personality and see how stunted your world is, was, and will be. Note, the uniforms are always at war, preparing for war, or somehow rationalizing the fear that supports the proactive aggressive response. Defense spending is really just offensive weapons purchases. America has no real authentic enemies other than the cult of wackos who infiltrated the Gov.
