Nausicaa is my favourite Ghibli movie. It's got the wonder and beauty of every Ghibli movie, but it has an ugly brutality to it which is appropriate for the setting. Nausicaa, as a character, is how you do a messianic character right. She's kindhearted, but you do glimpse some darkness in her. She sacrifices and suffers and even dies to save her people. It also has a weird soundtrack.

What a fascinating story and a shame the rest was lost to history. Despite how what the author could have meant given the times, the girl who loved bugs was still a fully-fledged character with strengths and flaws, and despite how others viewed her always had a good mindset of her own values. As such, I want to believe maybe the story was defying the social norms and she ended up managing to find her own happiness. In addition, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, is an amazing film that was just ahead of its time.

I watched this movie when I six years old on an old vhs tape lent to my father. It was unlike anything i had seen. A strong princess who DID things for her community instead of the disney and storybook princesses shoved down my throat at an early age who sat idle and usually got kidnapped. She flew gunships and killed people in a rage. She got along with all animals, not just the pretty ones. She fought and got wounded and was a real person almost in a fantasy world. She was the first princess I could see myself in when I was a child.
@PyroGothNerd2 ай бұрын
Sat idle and got kidnapped!? Snow White had to escape an assassination attempt, and became the boss of the seven dwarves Cinderella was fighting to stay positive while stuck in an abusive situation... something MANY people can relate to! Sleeping Beauty...well, she wasn't the real main character, the three good fairies were, and Prince Phillip was unable to do much without their help. Jasmine just wanted to be treated like a human, and refused to marry someone who wouldn't do so. Belle was able to recognize the red flags surrounding Gaston while the rest of the village thought he was great Ariel was hyperfixating on humans and only accepted Ursula's deal because of how her father treated her And that's just the 90's and prior! Also, of those examples, Jasmine was technically the only one kidnapped! (Belle agreed to stay with The Beast, her father was the kidnapped one) You don't have to put down other women to raise one up.

@candide10652 ай бұрын
@@PyroGothNerd Even if you kinda tried to say the right thing there (I guess), all of what you wrote are made up bs interpretations. All of these movies are based on fairy tails which were written hundreds of years ago when there were no strahng whamen, boss ladies and feminists who could destroy a story with obtrusive gaslighting (which is why stories then were much better than stories today). The reason why Disneys fairytail movies were so successful is because they didn't pander to any woke people by making women strong as if that has ever been the point about women OR movies.
@irondragonmaiden2 ай бұрын
@@PyroGothNerd All of those female characters bar Belle and Ariel were passive pinballs in their own stories. Like all of the early ones only got happy endings due to Deus Ex Machinas, not due to any action they themselves made (example, why should Cinderella get a fairy godmother instead of an actual scullery maid? Heck, even the case of how the fairies are the actual protagonists in Sleeping Beauty, note how it's elderly and so no longer hot and "fuckable" women who get to be active protagonists while the beautiful and young ones of marriageable age are stuck with the pinball damsel in distress trope). Even Jasmine had her ONE moment of rebellion when she ran away and then was a passive pinball for the rest of the movie (she gets a lot more active in her agency in the TV show and sequels, admittedly, I give her some slack since she's not the protagonist). Belle makes a choice.... and is a captive for most of the story. Ariel's choice to get legs WAS hers, but ultimately the rest is her going with the flow. Compare that with the many choices a male protagonist like Aladdin has? Or Hercules? Or any of the animal male protagonists who make multiple choices (not all of them necessarily good, but they are active parts of the plot).

I love bug girl... I'll be your friend, Buggie. I have a deep fondness for spiders and that gets me some weird looks at times. A few months ago a guy from an extermination service was soliciting around the neighborhood and knocked on our door, one of the things he said was (verbatim exchange here) "I see you have a lot of spiderwebs up around the eaves, we could take care of any of the spiders...." and I told him, "Oh actually I'm very fond of spiders so I don't mind." Him (blink blink): "So yeah we could take care of the spiderwebs." I think I broke his brain a little. My partner was in the other room listening and told me later how funny he thought it was that I just completely threw off the guy's spiel. Another occurrence was more sad, I had a male Zebra Jumper jumping spider who lived in my car and I'd see him crawl out to look at me in the morning and afternoon when I got in my car, for several months. One day, I went to the gas station, and in my state at the time we still could not pump our own gas (we can now, finally). The gas attendant went to remove my fuel tank cap and then all of a sudden started stomping all over the place and I didn't know what the heck was going on. Then when she gave me my card back, she was like "sorry about that I had to take care of a spider. I don't like how they jump." And I just looked at her for a moment, registering what she said, and kind of reflexively blurted out, "Oh no!! That was my friend..." And she gave me a weird look and the rest of the interaction was extremely awkward. Maybe it's dumb but I cried about that little spider. Poor little guy. I still think about you, buddy.

Funny how Sophie from Howl´s Moving Castle end looking more like the Caterpillar Princess rather than Nausicaä of the Wind Valley, because the latter is still conveniently atractive with very thin eyebrows when the girl of the fable is stated to have thick eyebrows. I guess not even Miyazaki view her as atractive enough for movies, uh.

If the bug girl have lived today she would have dr degree on biology and make youtube videos about catepillars, butterlies, bugs, etc on her free time.
