It’s insane they listened to Friday night lights and didn’t think release that as an album. Everyone in that room was bugging tf out

It wasn't that FNL wasn't good, but the reason why it was better as a mixtape was because of the many sample clearances they weren't gonna be able to get.

I truly believe that J Cole’s career needed The Sideline Story. He needed that freedom that came with the commercial success (220k first week sales is INSANE). As mentioned in the video, we woulda never got the Born Sinner we got without it. He NEEDED to learn the anatomy of a hit song. We would never have seen 2014 FHD, as he said, if he didn’t take those years to study and develop the so-called “superpowers” that allowed him to smack every song out the god damn park. Developing different facets of your skillset within your field is critical, and it’s one of the many lessons I’ve learned from exploring J Cole that I hope to embody in my future, and in my career/life. Y’all feelin’ me?

I'm SO tired of people discounting Cole's mixtapes EPs and the literal dozens of other songs he's released over the years FOR FREE when talking about incredible "discography". Drake too for that matter. They're either ignorant or blatantly ignoring it because it doesn't support their views. Cole could re-release those songs as 3 separate albums and it would blow up the internet. & Drake already did one.

Fr tho! Those “underground” tracks are the real classics!🔥

The difference between Cole and Drake is that: Cole’s recent stuff is highly exceptional just as much as his older stuff. Of course his older stuff like FNL & TWU are classics, but I feel like over the years like from 2018 when he started his feature run up until now, Cole’s pen game has sharpened so much that projects like “The Off Season” & “Might Delete Later” are some of his best projects to date which is scary because they’re considered preludes or appetizers to his main course which is “The Fall Off”, in which he’s been teasing for years & some of the songs that he teased on his MDL vlogs that was left off the “MDL” album, possibly being saved for “The Fall Off” sounds like we’re in for a rude awakening from Cole. Even Daylyt & Trae Tha Truth both have confirmed in interviews that “The Fall Off” is some of the best rapping from Cole that we’re ever gonna hear. So I feel like Cole has increased lyrically and in his discography, aside from his mixtapes. Drake on the other hand I feel like started off on fire with his first 3 mixtapes “Room For Improvement”, “Comeback Season”, & “So Far Gone” lyrically because it was authentically him. Yes, he’s had massive hits after those mixtapes, yes his first 4 studio albums “Thank Me Later”, “Take Care” (which The Weeknd gave him), “Nothing Was The Same”, & “IYRTITL” are all classics, yes he became a superstar in the mainstream world, but I feel like he started portraying an image in trying to be a fake tough wannabe hardcore rapper, even in some of the songs off his albums in which I named that are classics to me, straying away from his original sound that got him signed to Wayne in the first place, which is what made Dot crash out on him because instead of continuing to create a wave for himself, he started hopping on other artist’s wave to remain relevant like for example: him stealing XXXTENTACION’s flow on “Look At Me” & using it on “KMT” off “More Life”. And he started using mafia bars in his lyrics which felt inauthentic coming from him because that isn’t who he truly is and isn’t who he portrayed himself to be when he first came into the game. And not to mention, he was already sort of famous as a child actor before he got signed , so a lot of that tough talk in his lyrics wasn’t being bought into from certain people. And I feel like his last few projects he put out with the exception of “Her Loss” w/21 Savage & “Scary Hours 3” have all been somewhat decent to mid. I honestly don’t think he could ever go back to the artist he was when he first came out. The artist that was authentic and not trying to be something he wasn’t🤷🏾.

That was a great year for music… my senior year of hs/freshman yr of college. Good times! We were spoiled.. I loved More About Nothing and my roommate loved Friday Night Lights and we would be blasting both in our room all year. I got introduced to weed by way of Wiz, whom the guy I was dating was in love with lol. I also got introduced to Section 80 that year from a homie that was from Cali and bought Kendrick (music) on campus. Of course Nicki and Drake were already deep into their runs… man d times!!

Idk if it was a sample clearance issue or anything but i truly believe "You Got It ft. Wale" could've done real well on the radio in 09-10. Cole has other songs in hindsight that mightve done well give some of the hits we've heard after Cole's start, but i dont blame the label there. You Got It was the little party club song that was staring them right in the face.
