The fact Deku was supposed to stay quirkless and be more of a batman character, but then either Horikoshi decided it'd be boring or was told by editor or someone to change it, was the biggest misstep ever. Hell, even the original idea of giant girl being the main protagonist and story focusing more on collateral dmg etc. would be way more interesting than what we ultimately got. And don't get me wrong. The story has its great moments at the beginning and idea of Deku gaining All Might's power, but having to slowly training with it, was interesting, but the downside was always that the more control he gains over it, the more it'll just turn into your standard Shounen and Deku being All Might 2.0. But when Deku started to unlock all other powers, to me the story lost any originality it started with. I also liked that Deku was supposed to be more of a brain, than brawl character and even having him gain super-strength, but be still more of a character that uses that strength in clever ways, rather than just bashing enemies, would be interesting, but no, in the end he just turned into your standard, beat them up with overwhelming power protagonist. And lastly. I just think the world-bulding was very poorly done, because you really had hard time believing the society would work like that if almost all people were born with superpowers. Story starts explore it a bit more later, but it's way too late and as you mentioned, side character gets way too little screen-time and build-up, Deku's classmates being the main example, so a lot of stuff ends up simply as a wasted potential.
@King_Minos64 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kinda got bored with MHA after the early seasons. Granted, I already had somewhat of a cynical attitude towards it when Deku, who was built up to be a underdog, just gets thrown the best power first episode. I would’ve much rathered have Deku be a sort of Batman as you brought up and I very much dislike whoever forced through that change. I still enjoyed it nonetheless although partially disappointed, but as Deku became more and more powerful, I similarly lost interest. It just became… generic and the center point of MHA’s success was that it was unique. It lost its way as the dime-a-dozen shounen tropes creeped in.
@ProjektTaku8 ай бұрын
I disagree. When you look at the prototype one-shot, "My Hero", which as you described, originally had Deku having no quirk, I think that was the best change for the series. A Quirkless nobody finally gets his shot at his dream from his idol, and he has to deal with the fall out of the legacy he's inherited. Ironically, there are more series with a "character lacks the power system of their universe but still becomes the greatest", so making Deku have the greatest power in his universe is a nice switch up. Plus its not like its handed to him or he was a chosen one, he earned it through his determination and training, and continues to have to try and control it. Even him getting the previous quirks was nice, a new curveball without having to give him more special properties, like Naruto being the reincarnation of the first Hokage, son of the fourth, related to a super-strong secret clan, although I do think the power progression was a bit rushed.

I will say, this was one of the many things My Hero handled better than Vigilantes oddly enough. Since Deku and Koichi both get insane power ups to their quirks, but it just kind of all happens with Koichi in the final act without much earned buildup. And while it definitely felt out of nowhere with Deku too, admittedly, it fit the character a bit more. Although I get why some people weren't the biggest fan there.
@loliH9 Жыл бұрын
I loved Vigilantes. Not even going of the meta aspect of Deku being sold as an underdog when he isn't actually one, I found Koichi to be a much better protagonist to follow for the themes of heroism, the admiration for All Might, the hero system, how quirks affect society, etc. was done better and could be done better through following Koichi, the Boomer, and Pop Step. Koichi's power progression is much better too since it has all to do with him mastering a quirk he's misusing rather than just gaining more of them. About the only thing I didn't like is that Stain looked like an idiot for having very flimsy ideas and for attacking vigilantes of all people when they should be the last people he targets when vigilantes by definition do it for the love of the trade. Also, I've been calling Knuckleduster "the Boomer" for so long that I had to look up his name.

Another thing I liked about the manga is the way Koichi's Quirk develops, it goes from being seemingly useless to a Very strong one. . . Spoiler but, his quirk becomes so strong to the point where even One for all questions how it is possible for someone who started with a mediocre quirk to be able to take on number 6 who is basically an advanced nomu who retains all his intelligence, and then comes to the conclusion that with the right environment, enough will and experience anyone could become a superhuman.

I can only think of two other series that have solid spin-offs. Ancient Magus Bride and That Time I got reincarnated as a slime. Both have two spinoffs and both are pretty decent in their own right. The Ancient Magus Bride spinoffs are especially neat as while they take place in the universe of the main series, they are their own stories with only passing references to the main series so you can read them without having to read the main series. That Time I got reincarnated as a slime though, its two spinoffs are directly tied to events in the NOVELS of the main series and anyone reading the spinoffs without reading the NOVELS can easily get spoiled, I emphasise NOVELS because the events in one of the spinoffs (ways of the monster nation) takes place closer in time to where the light novels currently are than the manga is, despite the fact that Ways is manga only. Its annoying and I got spoiled cause I havent read the novels lol.

It's interesting since the only reason Deke is chosen is cause he has the heart of a hero and that's what matters over the quirk but in reality he still gets quirk (the strongest one next to the main villain) which somewhat defeats the purpose of why he was chosen in the first place. In all honesty a Batman like Deku in this world wouldn't make it. Sure for low level threats it's fine but to be as bombastic as this series because, Delu would have literally been dusted ages ago. It just doesn't work for this story being told.
Saying Spider-Man never had to pass an exam is insane considering most iterations he's a high school or college student and his struggles are the duality of being a super hero or a normal person that was just a bad refference to start with. And even Deku gets 2 Spider-Man powers as the story goes, with danger sense aka Spidey Sense, and Black Whip which unfortunately makes there other classmate with the tape powers kind of obsolete was his name Sero?
