If I recall, the only reason thrawn joined the empire was to utilize them as a tool to combat the growing threat in the unknown regions. One of my favourite bits from their interactions was Vader, again questioning Thrawn of his true loyalty, sort of rolling his eyes at Thrawn when he says Vader would stop him from betraying the Empire, so it's not a smart decision. Vader basically says "I'm sure you've thought of some way to kill me, right?" and Thrawn replies, "Three ways, actually."

Thrawn probably believes it’s wise to think of ways to kill Vader. But even he knows it would be stupid to actually try; which is probably why we will never see Thrawn vs Vader ever happen. No matter how ingenious or foolproof Thrawn’s plans are, we all know exactly who would win that fight.

I have this book on my shelf. Thrawn never intenionally 'trolls' vader. The video makes out that Thrawn took the piss out of him with the skywalker translation thing. In the book, when they originally met, Thrawn is initially confused about Anakins last name, something that Anakin takes note of at the time. Later, when he explains how 'skywalker' is what the chiss call the force sensitive kids as guides, Vader actually appreciates it somewhat, thinking of it as a 'small mystery, now put to rest.' At the end of the book vader and Thrawn have come to a sort of mutual appreciation and form of trust. Vader basically comes to terms with the fact he knows the truth and says they and thrawn will never mention or discuss him again. Thrawn agrees but says that he will continue to respect his legacy. Then after some awkward silence Vader offers to promote the TIE defender program (he flies one earlier in the book and thinks the only thing better is his TIE advanced X1) and suggests some design improvements, which are actually implemented in the elite version seen in 'Rebels' which is a pretty dope tie-in.

Thrawn's best achievments weren't even outlined one bit in SW: Rebels. Read the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zhan. It would have made a far better, fun, and exciting sequel trilogy, hands down. He had the New Reublic, plus Luke, Leia and Han against a wall with only a small number of Imperial Remnant ships. I gotta reread that series again.

I think it has more to do with Thrawn carefully and succesfully walking the line. Always some subtle comment that could or could not be made innocently or by mistake, which is why Vader constantly probes Thrawn's feelings instead of getting angry right away. The fact that things are never said openly, and that Thrawn is a Grand Admiral selected by Palpatine is enough to protect him from random murder based on mere suspicion, and Thrawn surely knows that. The last one (about the debt he owed to Anakin) did cross that line (and THAT made Vader angry), but as Thrawn did aknowledge Anakin's 'death' right after, there was no reason for Vader to kill him. At least that's how I see it.

The operation had no casualties, and yet he had typed in Anakin's name as a casualty. This was a strange feeling. It took him a minute to realized that what he felt was defeat. "Yes, defeat." He said to himself. Thrawn had envision his service to the empire with Skywalker by his side. But alas, Thrawn had failed to save his comarade from the dark abyss known as Vader. And so the admiral simply wrote his report again and threw himself back to work and help reshape the galaxy into a example of order and justice. And silently swore, that under his watch no more good men like Anakin would be lost to whatever defeat created Vader. Because even though Vader had proven as an effective and damn near perfect ally, what Thrawn needed despite him never admitting it was a friend.
