On a second note, as someone who has had exposure to different religious beliefs (primarily of the Abrahamic background like Christianity and Judaism), it's astounding how this one interaction unfolds very similarly to how a religious person talks about his faith to an agnostic or atheistic individual.

I think he had another moment to second guess his assumptions about the Force. That maybe Luke was right with what he said about the countless choices of all life being part of the will of the Force. What else would spawn such a crazy twist of fate as one man unwittingly detaining the son of the most publicly menacing figure in the galaxy?

The difference here is Palpatine didn't start a new empire and take over the whole galaxy and make the heroes do everything all over again like he did in the sequels.
