How to: AC Recharge 2018 Honda Civic (Check Recall First!)

Before attempting to Recharge your AC, please make sure you have checked if you car is part of the recall first. If it is, then you get a free repair for a leaking AC system.
Just want to make sure you are aware with that recall.

Thank you both tips; the different refrigerant and for the warranty tip! That worked for us and the dealer told me that it had not been done yet, so made an appointment for the warranty extension (there are two; Warranty extension 19-091 For Ac condenser AND Warranty extension 23-039 For Compressor shaft seal; 2018 Honda Civic). What happens if you open it all the way at the beginning and it goes just barely past the full line? Did I ruin it or can I still save it?

Hello. The full line is actually just a guide and general reference. If it is just slightly over the line, and AC is working good, you can leave it as is. The car AC system has an overcharge protection anyway that shuts the system down when it detects an overcharge in the system. But if it bothers you, you can release a bit of pressure. Remove the connector on the low pressure valve. While the car and AC running, depress the center of the valve for 1 to 2 seconds to release pressure. Reconnect the gauge and check the pressure. Don’t think this is the issue to my car I have a 2022 civic sport and the AC and heater is not working I have it on full blast but there is no out put this just started recently wonder what the problem with it is

Hello, I will try to help diagnose the issue. From what you mentioned, do you mean there is no air blowing when you turn it on? It might be the blower motor, or the switch resistor. Best way is to try to check on the fuses first, just to eliminate any issue on that part. Please give me more details so we can diagnose further. Thank - Rjeff H2H

@@How2Helen when I turn it on it will work for a few minutes but than it stops blowing air and I just hear it struggling so I just stopped turning it on don’t want to further damage it

@@takeovaLA It sounds like your blower motor is either getting stuck, or it's on its way out. Blower motor should not be hard to replace. Usually it is just behind the glove compartment, and you remove/ replace it from the bottom. Check first if maybe there is something in there that is getting the motor stuck and could not rotate freely. Let me know what you find! good luck! - Rjeff H2H

@@How2Helen yea I’m 99% sure it’s something with the blower motor getting stuck it turns on and than dies out makes some noises I’m taking it to the dealer in a couple days hopefully it’s not expensive or they try to charge me still got the 36,000 mile warranty and it doesn’t expire until October

@@How2Helen thanks you were very helpful I’ll ask them what was causing the problem and update you won’t surprise me if it’s twigs getting it stuck because I changed the cabin filter thinking it would solve the problem and it had a good size twig and the filter was pretty dark car has under 13,000 miles but in the area I live there is always tons of dust from construction and dump trucks

@@AQJERZ Hello. You can check your car's manual. Also, there should be a label on your engine bay indicating what refrigerant to use. Just to add, I believe the EPA required 2016 vehicles and newer to use the new refrigerant. The caveat is we don't know what year each car companies complied with this requirement. Hello. Did they at least replace the ac compressor, or any part of the ac system? If not, that would be annoying, but still not bad. Average price here in NYC for an evacuate, recharge/refill of refrigerant is around $300 nowadays. You just got a dealer price if that’s all they did. Thanks for your input! -Rjeff H2H

@@How2Helen Not at all. They said there were only a few parts within the AC unit that were included in the recall. They couldn't find anything after the diagnostic dye test. Just refilled it. A year later it's out again.

@@Mr.NotYourPALGuy I am so sorry to hear that. This is actually the reason I decided to work on my own cars, and help others. Sometimes you really have to take matters in your own hands if you want it done right. Anyway, my suggestion is just find a reputable mechanic, get the latest revision for the AC compressor, which I believe where the leak is, and have it replaced. One repair, and be over it. Or, just buy yourself some refill cans like in the video, and just refill the system when it is low on refrigerant. Please share on what you decide to do, and hopefully, it would help others make their decision as well. Hoping for the best. Good luck! - Rjeff H2H

@@Mr.NotYourPALGuy Just put in a can of freon once or twice per year. The 8 oz cans are only $30 at NAPA and it takes only a few minutes to recharge.

2017 honda they say its the evaporator so not covered, $2800??!! but what i found strange was that they also listed leak in compress and condensor in the work order! which is covered. why would they do that? Because thats where the leak is and not the evaporator and reimbursement from Honda to dealership sucks apparently. what a scam..and they know that if they only fix evaporator and still have problem theyll be found out. If the leak was from only the evaporator they would only fix that.

Hello. You should have called ahead of time to see if you are covered under the recall/warranty. If you are not, then you are at their mercy and they can charge you whatever they want.
