00:00 Introduction
Once you start dressing well, you'll notice that people will compliment you more often, it's a good thing. Don't spoil it!
Most people don't know how to take a compliment and as a consequence, they alienate people or even offend them. Not only will they likely never compliment that person again but they may also avoid them or even speak badly about them.
So what started out as something positive turns into something negative, but it doesn't have to be that way. Responding and accepting a compliment is in fact so simple that everyone can do it without practice.
How Not To Reply To A Compliment
01:11 First of all, don’t correct people
01:31 Resist the urge to escape
01:50 Denial
02:11 Deflecting a compliment
02:29 Don’t explain or over-explain
02:54 Don’t brag
03:13 Never cheapen a compliment
03:30 Don’t forfeit
How Do You Accept A Compliment Like A Gentleman?
04:00 Relax
04:30 Observe and reciprocate
04:50 Compliment their actions
Bottom line is, to accept a compliment only requires a smile and a “thank you.” In order to give a great compliment back, you have to pay attention! So whenever you pay a compliment, it’s essential that it’s genuine. Otherwise, your body language and the way you say it will communicate that it’s not true, and then it really backfires on you.

I usually give a charming chuckle, smile, and say, "Thanks, I appreciate that!" An anecdote regarding compliments: My grandpa was a true class act; when managing an assembly line and giving clients a tour of the facility, he'd explain what happens at a given station by saying, "this fine gentleman here..." or "this lovely lady here..." followed by what their responsibilities entail. His employees loved him so much they all showed up at his funeral to pay their respects, and said going to work for him was a real pleasure, that he treated them with dignity. I learned a lot from him, as well as my own dad. It's very important to treat people with dignity and courtesy. Respect has to be earned, though. This is an interesting channel, and the first of your videos I've seen. I look forward to picking up tips I may have missed!

As a musician today, I think this is a really important lesson to learn. I have a class called Recital Seminar, where we play in front of a room of people that play the same or similar instruments, depending on the day, you’re also given comments. Sometimes you’re given a comment that’s all compliments and no criticisms, it’s nice but the amount of people who make faces or discredit themselves as opposed to just smiling and saying “thank you” is pretty astonishing. I’ve always found it’s better to smile and say thank you, otherwise the listener starts to second guess themselves, “was I wrong? Maybe it was bad,” then they just start listening for mistakes and short comings in your playing.

Some suggestions for a reply other than thank you: 1. I appreciate that compliment, it means a lot to me. 2. I’m delighted to hear that, you just made my day/week. 3. I’m glad that you liked it. 4. That is the nicest thing I’ve heard from someone this week/month/year. 5. You just made me feel special, honestly. (Maybe with someone you’ve known for a while).

Read a book with communication tips (helpful book), and this topic was in it. The author recommended not just ending it with "thanks" (can be kind of a conversation stopper), but complimenting them back with even a, "Oh thank you, you're very kind!" kinda thing. Works well!

I was in a Big Box store and saw this very pretty lady. I could tell she was married but gave her a compliment like like this. " please forgive me for being so bold, but you are just strikingly beautiful." To which she replied, " Thank you for being so bold, you just made my week!" I walked away knowing she felt better about herself without me pushing an alterior motive.

The fact that society NEEDS videos like these is the problem in and of itself. I agree with everything this video says. The best complement I ever got was going into a post office. I held the door open for a lady and her child then an older man and he gestured for me to go inside and I told him "after you sir" he smiled and told me "thank you, a true gentleman and a scholar" I said "why thank you sir" then he said "not many of us left" so I told him "what a shame" and he nodded "truly so". I have never felt so darn cool or good after a complement I need to wait till I'm about 60 to tell another young man that one day now.

As a woman who loves an old fashioned gentleman I can assure you that it is hard for a man to "become" one. A gentleman is actually a personality type meaning that he is actually "born" one. It is actually the rarest type of man on earth. He naturally possesses these amazing traits and is very self reflecting and observant of others positive and negative traits. It's almost as if he carefully studies how everyone acts. Then filters out "how to act" and "how not to act" applying the "how to" to himself which is quite amazing. The chances of meeting one is very rare. A gentleman also thinks much like a woman but is very masculine and straight which also makes him both rare and irresistible to women. His mother instills in him "proper" manners and he builds on that as he ages. It was a woman who groomed Clark Gable on his mannerisms for acting. ( He could be a gentleman on screen but was hardly one off ). I feel like some women know how a gentleman should act more than many men do....or maybe it's because I am a straight woman who thinks like a man which is also rare. LOL A gentleman in my opinion would respond to a compliment by simple saying "thank you" or "thank you, you're too kind" in a low and calm tone with a slight smile. Simple. Honest. Cool, calm, and collective.

This really helps me because I'm autistic and I want to learn how to mimic a good personality. I am also really guilty of oversharing and infodumping when someone compliments a piece I'm wearing. Edit: I also learned from taking Japanese that it's actually impolite to accept compliments, and you're supposed to reject them politely because it shows humility. It's opposite in the west, where doing so makes the compliment giver feel like they have bad taste.

I'm not autistic as far as I know but I can relate. Also it's tricky to adapt to the situation and the person you're talking to, because by not accepting compliments you could be humble and disrespectful at the same time.

If I may, don't change who you are because you're autistic. I know a few people who are (and live with one of them) and I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't mimic a personality, especially if some random people are telling you that's what you should do. March to the beat of your own drum. Don't let the world tell you who to be. Be who you were created to be.

I'm autistic too and I used to try to copy likeable personalities to socialise, trust me for all my years of experience, the best thing you can do is to be yourself plus a few very difficult things for people like us: - Relax. - Have confidence in who you are. - Fear not rejection or disapproval. You are who you are, fight for what you believe in, be a warrior and you'll become virtually unstoppable ✌🏼...

This is a surprisingly great and necessary guide. When I first started dressing a little shaper, I think I must have done just about every one of these no-no's at one point or another. My most common was the compliment back, but it got to the point that it felt so forced and disingenuous. When I began to just say, "Thank you!" and give a big, warm smile, I could feel that their reaction was true and warm; they just went out of their way to try to make you feel good, so a warm smile shows them they succeeded and they feel good about it...plus now I don't have to fish for phoney baloney compliments! "Hey, you look really sharp in that suit, man!" "Gee thanks...uh...I really like your sweatsuit?" haha! THANKS GG!

Amazingly I was never taught how to receive a compliment when I was young. Not sure why, since I was taught good manners and behavior otherwise. It wasn't until I was maybe 15 years old l and got a compliment and basically deflected it as I generally did, and as I was walking away, I heard the man saying to his wife, "can you believe it? he didn't even say thank you." It was a shameful revelation, and I never forgot it for the rest of my life. I didn't neglect to teach my own kids--although I'm sure I accidentally overlooked teaching them some other aspect of good manners. Learning (and practicing) good manners and making people feel comfortable around you is, for most of us, a life-long journey.

I believe that is a return compliment that is appropriate although some people might think it belittles the compliment or questions the person's sincerity. thus, it should be said sparingly and (always) sincerely. in certain settings, a gently comical reply helps soften the compliment, especially if it's given in a group setting and sounds like the person is "trying too hard." for example, if the person exuberantly compliments a piece of clothing, I might reply"this old thing?" and then smile and chuckle in a warm and embracing manner. a gentle touching of the person's arm or shoulder helps convey the message to the rest of the group that this person is "ok" even if his comment was a bit awkward.

I once complemented an executive on his obviously very expensive silk tie. He said, “Thank you! Your tie is [suddenly he realized my tie was trash] . . . tied really well.” I smiled and thanked him in return.
