A few weeks back i was asked how i acclimate new saltwater fish for my aquarium.. well today i picked up a new Leopard wrasse!!!!! I have wanted one of these guys for a while now and finally got one!
Now before I even bought the fish i made sure to pre-inspect him to make sure he looked healthy and there was no signs of diseases.. I even let him sit at the shop for 3-4 weeks as a bit of QT to make sure he was issue free. Today i gave him another once over and even saw him go after food the second it was added.. i knew i had found a healthy fish!
How how to acclimate your new saltwater fish?
Start by floating the bag for 10-20 minutes.
Pour the fish into a new container
Add a scoop of tank water to the acclimation container..
Wait about 10 mintues then add another scoop.
Continue doing this until you have atleast doubled the volume of water.
By this time your fish should be adapated to your tanks paramaters.
Scoop out the new fish using a net to avoid mixing store water with your tank and add the little guy to your aquarium!
Its can also be a good idea to turn off the lights before adding the new fish to decrees stress of other tank mates.
Have any other tips? Let us know in the comments below!

Your videos was really helpful for me!!! I knew that you had to let the bag sit in the water, but I was confused of how much tank water to add to the original water before taking the fish out. Thank you so much! I am going to get a salt water aquarium soon, and I plan to get a yellow tang, a mandarin fish, a teardrop clownfish, and a Ocellaris clownfish!!

Did she develop any colors at all? I have one that looks just like this, but I am wondering if I should have gotten something a little more colorful like a blue star or something.

Do you still have this guy? I had a blue star leopard wrasse for quite a few years and want another with my new tank. So fun to watch him dive into the sand at night. :-)

Good tips. They had 2 at my LFS and the owner told me as they get bigger they destroy your tank knocking over rocks and frags and what not. Any thoughts?

This is actually a terrible way to acclimate a fish. First you acclimated the fish to temperature just to add him to a glass vile and leave him there out of the tank for 15 minutes and added a cup of water every 15 minutes. The change in temperature in those 15 minutes it's insane. Then you threw out all the water and just dumped the fish inside the tank. Once again shocking the fish due to temperature control. I have had best success with doing it a different way. Clip the same bag that the fish came in to an area of your sump where the fish is floating in the water but the bag is stretched all the way up to your sump rim. Then do a drip system or fill it up to the top with a cup then throw away the water and drop your fish in. This way the fish stays to temperature at all time.

Great video any ways. Don't mean to bash just something I noticed.

If your room was cold then it could cause a temperature swing. I have actually seen nifty little clips that hold the bang in the water to allow you to drip the fish while the back is floating.

ReefDudes yeah my house is kept in the 70. My 460 maintains but the bag or bucket swings way to much in temp

So you got me curious and i had to test this. I took the exact same beaker and filled it to 500ml with tank water. Tested and it was 25.1c Let it sit for 10 min and it tested at 24.9c after 15 min is was 24.7c so .04c of a swing after 15 min..on a side note adding scoops of tank water will bump it back up slightly so i don't feel this minute change will affect much in "MY" scenario.. If your air conditioner is pumping or its the middle of water then that will obviously affect the temperature differentials But i do agree that using one of those dripping systems that hold the bag in tank water would be ideal for situations where its noticeably cooler outside of your tank :)

ReefDudes that's great that for your situation it doesn't fluctuate as mine do. I didn't mean it as anything bad. I just though to mention another way because your are growing in this hobby and your are pumping a lot of great videos. It's always good to mention a few ways of doing it correct. Because for the novice reefer that's starting off will shock there fish and stress it out. It happened to me and I been in the hobby for what it seems for ever now. But keep up the great videos loving them

Is there a reason you don't quarantine your fish? You've got so much nice equipment but can't spend $50 on a couple of 10gs and air stones? You're hardly the only guy doing this but I'm shocked there are so many people making youtube videos of just throwing fish into their DT. Sure you can argue led vs mh, sand bed vs bare bottom but there is no good reason to add a fish directly to your display. Additionally you had the store keep your fish 3-4 weeks that's 3-4 shipments of fish coming in with more potential disease. A big reason people give up is their fish get wiped out.

I have had the fish on hold for 3-4 weeks now. I always give the fish a good visual inspection at the shop make sure their is no obious signs and that he is eating. In this case I essentially let the shop QT him as he was in a tank with one other tiny hippo tang. After the 3-4 weeks I went back watched him for about 10-20 min. Saw him going after pellets when dropping one in and no visual signs of illness so I was happy. I'm very very picky when I buy them and even the slightest sign of unhealthy ness in the tank will prevent me from buying a fish. One flip side I feel dipping and QTing a fish just puts him through added stress, and added stress makes the fish get sick! so i have mixed feelings on QT'ing.. i think it depends on the situation but i prefer to do my due diligence up front and "try" to only get very healthy fish.
