DIY PETE Hey Pete! The kitchen floors turned out gorgeous. Lots of marbling and friends and family ask me about them all the time. I was so happy with the results, I decided to do my backyard concrete patio slab. However, I found that even when I properly cleaned and prepared the slab for the staining, it didn't come out as pretty. For one thing, the concrete soaked up the solvent-based sealer like a sponge. The final appearance was not smooth and shiny -- even with the wax -- like the kitchen floors. I have a hunch it is because the concrege surface was been weathered over time and is more porous. Is this correctable?

I did our bottom floor of our house about six years ago and forgot the process. I watched your video and it all came back to me. We have new cement poured in our backyard and that’s what I’ll be doing. Cheers!

This is actually great for unfinished basements. Saves money on tiling and carpeting, so you can use that money for finishing a bathroom, a bar, and of course and entertainment system for the cave! If you want carpet and tiles later, so can always do that on top, but a big rug with this is a great look too!!

FirstDegreeRickW As in highlight colors, --- or more as in scoring the concrete to look like tile and doing colors? I cut a 3 foot diameter compass rose in an entranceway awhile back and then stained it different colors. I'd love to hear what you'd like to see on a counter or vanity :) Thanks Rick!

DIY PETE I used to build Water Falls and features and used acid staining to color the Faux rock panels. Its been years so I don't remember what we used to speckel the panels with white and black dots to make the panels look just like granite. As you know granite is chaulk full of colors including Aqua's. So that's what I would like to do is to make a concrete kitchen counter and make it look like granite. I even thought about running a big magnet thru the local river sands here and using the Iron Pyrite to sprinkle on the counter to add to the realism.

FirstDegreeRickW That would be a cool idea. Knowing how lazy I am I would just do the concrete kitchen counter and then paint it and add the granite effect with an air brush.

FirstDegreeRickW Hey Rick! Love it. I think you'll want to polish the concrete with a wet polisher to expose the aggregate. I'm going to have to do a video showing this :) You can embed anything you want as you know, which is another reason I love working with concrete!

I notice some people just spray stain and then seal it whereas some spray stain and neutralize it with baking soda and scrub the stain and rinse with water before sealing it. Does both work?
