Ofc I can figure out how to play a scale to a click, but where do I go from there? Syncopation is basically playing notes off the beat in the metronome’s case, you play the note ahead or after the ‘click’ Edit: It depends on the song/piece on whether you play the note ahead or after the click or pulse. Just wanted to make that clear.

You should still use metronome when practicing speed (that's when you may want to set the bpm to something a bit more than your comfort zone), not just when practicing timing/rhythm feel. You should probably use a metronome for almost everything you practice.

I’ve been playing sax for 10 years and guitar for 1, it’s to the point now where I don’t need a met because the best is so engraved in my head and I’ll still use one from time to time. But yea, if you have no music experience, having a met on pretty much every thing is important at first. Build that beat into your head and you won’t have to worry about speeding up or slowing down accidentally

Also try to reinterpret the beat, my teacher for example would tell me "imagine every beat is the 2 an 4" or you can try the 1 an 3, or maybe every beat is the upbeat, that's a really challenging one, pr maybe put the metronome in 40 bpm and try to imagine that is the 1, so your brain tries to follow with the "phantom" beats. or maybe change to 6/8 without touching the metronome, there are many interesting challenges you can try, this type of exercises will allow your mind to be more aware of the rhythm. Is a really good exercise

the main problem i've had with using a metronome is playing when i hear the metronome instead of lining my playing of the notes up with the metronomes clicking. it is really simple to fix this issue, just acknowledging when you're doing it and stopping is enough to fix it

You'll get more control the better your rhythm is ... But remember the band wants you to be in rhythm but the crowd if you have one or the listener - they want you to be slightly off rhythm because it's the "feel" of a musician that people look for. The more feel you bring the better ... But it also depends on what you're doing as a guitarist you're probably extremely pivotal I hate the stigma of "important guitarists" but you may not be. If feel helps don't play robotic. But it's just like scales ... You learn rhythm so you can go off rhythm but with control. That will also help you be a studio musician. But "THE BAND" THEY want you to play like a metronome because if you can't stay in rhythm ... Then the band will struggle to get back in rhythm with each other and that's embarrassing and hard and they will play with someone else because that's too much.

When people are confused about how to actually use the metronome they are NOT talking about clicking along on a scale. Show them how to use the metronome in a musical context by singling out a lick/riff/melody and showing them how to actually *count* that lick. This is just an abject error in reasoning on your part.
