Hey Sean, have been doing music classes for 3yrs, I get pretty frustrated a lot of the time with my own learning process, but really appreciate the way you simplify and break down music theory for beginners. Your channel is always my go to for new info and motivation. Subbing drum loops for metronome is perfect👌 Thanks for sharing 🙏

That rhythm being messed up by slow metronome beats really got me. Like I would tell myself that everyone tells me to practice slowly and with a metronome, but this is just making things worse, what am i doing wrong! Am I stupid or what. Thanks man. You the boss.

Hey Sean, I've asked you some questions about practicing with a metronome last week and both your answer and this video have been an amazing response! Already got myself some drum loops and I have been using them in the last couple of days. It was a bit tricky in the beginning but I have also felt some improvements in my groove. I guess I still feel like I could use some tips on playing chords&lead lines together (hendrix-esque, etc) along with a drum loop (or a metronome for that matter) but I really don't want to sound like I'm ungrateful for every video you put up so I will keep watching your lessons regardless of those tips being given in the recent future! Many thanks man =)

Hey brother Really good lesson. You brought out great topics, dynamics, tempo etc. I’m an experienced player and I’m always trying to improve my skills. You have approached several topics that rang a bell in my mind. I will watch this video again several times over to help digest all or at least some of the points you mentioned. I listened 2x while changing strings on my acoustic. I have to change strings on my strat now and will listen again. Then I’ll play along with your points about the metronome and will also in the near future check out the drum app possibilities. Thank you ✌️❤️🎸 Rob from Long Island

I just bought a looping station and having perfect timing is essential. You have to play full measures or else multiple looping just won't work. And I totally agree that playing with a drum loop is way better and easier than metronome.

Tq very much. I am having difficulty in using metronome playing rhythm guitar. I thought I am the only one who love to use drum loop instead. Sometimes I feel like I need to use metronome because its kind of 'official thing' but after watching this, I realized maybe What I am doing is the right stuff anyway.

Thanks Richard! Great question! One thing you could do is tell him/her a song you want to learn or a style you're going for ahead of time, and then when you actually have the lesson, see how prepared they are with what you requested. I think that's a reasonable way to see if they really care about what you're going for that doesn't really put them on the spot. Have fun with your lessons man and let me know if you ever have questions!

Nice one Master Sean, much appreciated! Those of us who learn through videos recognize why practicing with a metronome is important. Still haven't learned how to switch on these things properly until this day (which tells more about me than I 'd like to express) . Anyhow, could you please explain how guitarists use and set up drum machines? I heard an instructor mentioning that the lessons' drum track is made all with a machine, and only the final performance had a nice two legged, two armed human being play on the drums. Thank you for your efforts, and thank you for educating us about metrosexual gnomes might come handy one day.

I believe that one needs to play things to a metronome that doesn't have every note or chord falling right on a click. Playing a scale or chords to a metronome and only picking or strumming on a click is akin to tapping your foot to a beat. Anyone can do it. I suggest trying to play something trickier/irregular that may have gaps, fast and slower parts in it that still have to stay in time. That's what works best for me.
@seandaniel236 жыл бұрын
Excellent tip.

Thank you Sean. The light came on while watching this Bill Kirchen video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOlfYlvfsaahZo I know it's the beginning of the drum track (I use those a lot as well), but I started using my metronome differently and it's helped me a lot.

My sweat spot right now is exactly 93 bpm(i play metal so it is alot of 16 notes and stuff like that) and i feel like this is the place where i can play shredy tripplets all over the neck without getting lost and count 1e&a...with control. My goal is to be able to do all that with 120 bpm. I have soon been playing For a year and i wonder how long you think it Will take to achieve that goal if i play 2 hours a day

UNLESS you are playing thrash or speed metal you do not have to be able to play at 500 bpm. I started slow at 60bpm and now can play 160-200bpm accurately.

@altmaster32887 жыл бұрын
James Cronos Not formally. It's somewhat arbitrary depending on your note subdivisions. That being said... if there were, it would probably be 120bpm.
@seandaniel237 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd agree, most stuff defaults at 120, but there's not really a standard.

Everyone can play scale with metronome and simple chord strums but not with entire songs. Moving through an intro. and into the first verse or from a verse to an instrumental is tough. Nobody teaches this tough metronome stuff.

The problem with practicing timing with a drum loop instead of a metronome is that drum loops tend to be more forgiving: if you're a little bit ahead of the beat or behind the beat, it's not as obvious to your ear. Recording yourself doing the exercise can help you hear how your timing is weak when you listen to it later; but it's much easier to notice *while playing* with a metronome than with drum loops.
