What a great tutorial! Like others, I have just successfully put my first zip in a tote! I think the magic of this video is that it is JUST about the zipper - you are not watching a whole tote construction tutorial. Just a tip for other zipper newbies, take your time, stitch slowly and PRESS WELL! It will make your stitching easier. Also, if you have a rotary cutter, use that to neatly slice open you zipper pocket, then scissors on the triangle bit. Thanks again, Ms Trace, all my totes will now have internal pockets to keep those valuables safe and secure! I am making totes for Xmas, but after that I'll be back to purchase a zipper pouch pattern to support your channel

I am new to your videos and I love them. I have never made a tote before but your video has inspired me to make one. I am making it out of canvas and lining it, no pockets on this one. Should I wash the fabic before. Thank you.

Thanks so much Gladys! You can definitely do it! I don't usually wash my fabrics beforehand unless I'm worried that the color will bleed. But I also wash in cold water and line dry so there's not a big change of shrinkage happening either :). If you're worried about color bleeding out or shrinking, you should prewash. Yes, you could follow this tutorial to make 1 panel of your bag have the pocket and then you could follow my lined tote bag tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4TEcqekh9eCfcUsi=iPscngKUom45-9zW and just use the panel you created either as an inside or an outside panel of the bag :). hope that helps!

This was really helpful -- but I think your measurement is off! The slot you cut open is as wide as the length of the zipper tape, whereas I think it should be the length of the zipper itself! Making it as long as the tape means that the ends aren't very secure and there's a gap at either end. I cut my slot according to the video, but ended up having to patch other fabric in to fill in the ends :(

My zipper tape is usually about 1.5" longer than the zipper itself :). This opening is for the zipper length, not the zipper tape :). Thanks for watching!

Your draw on the wrong side of the pocket piece. The fabric you are sewing it to is the right side. Which means both pieces will have the right sides together. Hope that helps. 😊
