Great video as always! One thing that I would add is to be careful when tightening the 2 nuts holding the Mega fuse. Even with the washer and lock washer, the Mega fuse attachment lugs can have a tendency to rotate and if there is enough rotation, the connection can separate (ask me how I know). I had to go out and purchase another Mega fuse to replace the one that broke. You want the connection to be tight enough but just be aware of the rotation of the fuse!

My best guess for copper lock washers is it prevents damage to other flat surfaces. I have steel lock washers that have gouged out my copper cable lugs in other connections (on terminals where there wasn't enough room for a washer)

Pretty much ... Copper Split Locks require much less tightening force to 'collapse', while still giving enough resistance against nut to mitigate backing-off. Stainless or carbon split locks have the capacity to weaken damage the related [Plastic]

BTW, your videos have been very helpful explaining a lot of this. I've watched many of them several times over. electric stuff is confusing and scares me. lol

If the component stops working, you can use a multimeter to test voltage on either side of the fuse to see if it's blown. The fuses in the Lynx Distributor shouldn't be blowing unless something catastrophic happens, though.

Easy detail to miss but If you begin assembling this and wonder why the fuse didn't line up flat, there is a nut that goes under the fuse, then the fuse and lug are stacked over it, then the second nut over it. The first nut is critical to bring the fuse up to the same height as the bus bar.

First off, thank you so much for all your information, you are one of my favorite KZbinrs of all time! I share your videos with anyone that has any questions about electrical systems in van or bus conversions! Quick questions, is the 100 amp mega fuse being used to protect the cable that connects from the battery to the Lynx distributor (as opposed to the cable connecting to the solar charge controller)? AKA is the sizing of the 100 amp fuse irrelevant to the size of the solar charge controller?
@EXPLORISTlife3 жыл бұрын
The MEGA fuse is there to protect the wire from the Lynx Distributor to the Charge controller. There would be a seperate fuse near the battery bank to protect the wire from the battery to the lynx distributor (www.explorist.life/solarwiringdiagrams). The sizing of the MEGA fuse protecting the wire form the Lynx Distributor to the charge controller is based on Victron's recommendation, which is stamped on the side of the charge controller (and if there is no stamp, is sized based on the charge controller size).

@craigchamberlain Жыл бұрын
I was going to make the same comment having just built up two Lynx Power In units with fuses but I was pretty sure someone would have said this already. I see @EXPLORISTlife ‘s reply below but surely Nate it’s better to have some sort of “at time of video the torque spec recommended by Victron is 10NM” than just have people wrenching on the nuts with no idea how tight they need to be. To me, 10NM felt about right for the support nut and 14NM felt fine for the clamping nut. I didn’t sense any feeling of impending failure in either case but they both felt secure. Even just the fact that they specify 10 and 14 NM suggests that a torque wrench is pretty important because I doubt many people can judge a 4 NM difference by hand outside of a veteran in a professional machine shop. Constructive criticism aside, this was a great video and has saved me a chunk of cash and led to a much better DC bus bar arrangement so I want to thank you. FYI, I have two Power In’s arranged vertically with the bottom unit being for my Pylontech batteries to connect via 125A fuses to protect the cables. Note I don’t use DC isolators for the batteries since I can shut down the Pylontech batteries via their own controls. The top Power In currently only feeds my Multiplus-II 48/5000/70-50 via a 200A fuse but I will soon add a pair of 250/60 MPPTs via 80A fuses and probably without DC isolators (still debating this though). All fuse ratings are as recommended by Victron except the Pylontech fuses which are purely to protect the cables. Unfortunately Victron don’t supply 48V rated mega fuses below 125A breaking capacity so I had to source them from Littelfuse instead. You can get them on Mouser under part reference 70V-SF51 in various capacities. Quality appears very good and much cheaper than from Victron with a higher voltage rating. Technically a 48V rated fuse should not be used on a system running at ~53V so the Littelfuses at 70V rating offer lots of headroom. I’d be interested in your opinion on whether I need DC isolators for my two MPPTs or whether the fact they will have DC isolators on the PV incoming connections renders these devices as “consumers” of fused, low level power and thus can be treated just like the Cerbo GX which is powered via its own inline fuse directly from my main bus bar. I’m keen to minimise DC losses via unnecessary connections but I don’t want to compromise safety obviously. Advice welcome. Thanks.

A question on Volts, I am creating a large Solar array and thought the "Victron Lynx Power In" might be the way to go, But the "Victron Lynx Power In" 1000A is also rated at 48v, my intended Solar Panel array is 6 x 300w Panels in Series-Parallel giving me 60volts, can the "Victron Lynx Power In" handle the voltage.
@EXPLORISTlife2 жыл бұрын
Nope. That's the wrong tool for the job. MC4 combiners should be used given you can keep the array amperage under 30A (which shouldn't be a problem with only 6 panels). How to wire solar panels in series-parallel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGOraammn52lh8k

@@EXPLORISTlife I watched your "Series-Parallel" video but still confused, your video states you add Volts if in series so, ( series-parallel ) 2 x strings of 3 x 300w @ 20v each = 60volts / 34Amps , is that correct?

I've got a question hopefully someone can answer. I've emailed Victron direct, but they refuse to answer my question and keep pointing me to a local distributor or dealer. Not easy to do when you've purchased your products from Amazon links. I have a SmartSolar MPPT 100|50 and a SmartShunt 1000amp. If I use the temperature sensor for BMV 702/712 as shown in the SmartShunt user manual to get battery temp along with the voltage data the SmartShunt already provides, will the SmartShunt share the battery temperature data with the SmartSolar MPPT over the Bluetooth VE Smart Network so I can use the low temp charge cut off protection feature in the MPPT? Hopefully someone can help. Thanks.

heads up, the link is for M6 x 8mm bolts. Needs to be updated. The remaining hardware links are correct.

Hi, Is it possible to add the LED strip?
@EXPLORISTlife2 жыл бұрын
Nope. Just buy the Lynx Distributor if you want that functionality.

My device is already fused. Would it be ok not to use a fuse in the shunt?
@EXPLORISTlife Жыл бұрын
'fuse in the shunt'? Like... the lynx shunt? If you don't put a fuse there, power wouldn't flow through the unit. Other shunts like the smartshunt or bmv-712 shunt don't have fuses except to power the computer board on the side.

Can you use ANL fuses in the lynx distributor or only the MEGA?
@EXPLORISTlife3 жыл бұрын
Only Mega fuses. ANL fuses are too long.

What type fuse is being used? A CNN/ANN series? or a MEGA-AMG series?

MEGA fuses are what fit in the Lynx Distributor and modified Lynx Power In

@@EXPLORISTlife I measured the distance between the center positive terminal posts on the Victron Energy Lynx Distributor, 2.00 inches. Thank you for the information.
