I've been in my shed 3 hours a day for the last week trouble shooting why my pitty doesn't start and I adjusted the valves, the mixture screw, the jets and the timing of literally everything and finally today I got it started and I don't even need to be watching this but if you know that feeling you get when you've successfully fixed your bike then you'll know

That's awesome, dude. I was only 16 when I posted this video. Being young has nothing to do with what you can do. There are plenty of old folks that can't do mechanical stuff. The main thing that holds people back is they are scared to try. Every expert was a beginner at some point. Get out there, take stuff apart, look at it, and figure out how it works.

i have an 86 honda trx70 atv. it runs great,but sometimes i like to test my luck on steep hills and washouts. the of course,the enine gets hot. i am very carefull not to overheat it though. but when it gets really hot it starts bogging away at aboit 1/8th throddle. i have done tons of work to flatheads but almost never any to ohv. i asked my buddy if it cpould be the valves and he said yes but don't do it because you have to practically strip the entire engine to do so. thanks for making the vid

You can check the clearance just by getting a feeler guage and seeing if it fits snugly between the tappet and valve stem. If they are in spec you don't need to adjust anything, just screw the tappet cover back on. Valve adjustments are just a part of maintenance. It's not a bad idea to check them every once in a while. But if it starts and runs good you probably don't need to worry about it.

Unless the manufacturer said otherwise, use the factory specifications for the tappet adjustment. And with any performance cam, make sure the check the valve to piston clearance to ensure no contact occurs.

@Nick75987 it may have tight valves, which means there is not enough clearance between the top of the valve an the adjusting screw which will not allow the valves to close fully

@penna171980 Yes but the Z50's are all 4 strokes. And no there are no push rods, the Z50 uses an overhead cam. The Honda QA50 used a pushrod motor and very early Honda Cubs used a similar motor.

They are color coded so I know what size they are from across the room. Black tape are wrenches ending in 0 or 5. 5mm, 10mm, 15mm etc. No tape means sizes ending in 1 and 6. White tape is 2 and 7. Red is 3 and 8. Blue is 4 and 9. Then it starts over again. Makes it easy to find tools.

If you have done the adjustment correctly and the noise persists, then I would suggest you look at the cam chain tension. When it is loose the chain will slap around and make a lot of noise. Valve adjustment would not affect this. If it is not that, you may have a bent valve or other internal damage, but I would say that is very unlikely.

Plug is fouling because oil is somehow getting in the cylinder. That also explains the smoke. Check your compression. Then add a few drops of oil in the spark plug hole and check the compression again. If it goes up, your rings need to be replaced. If it's the same, replace the valve seals. It is more likely to be the rings. If the cylinder measures within spec, just hone it and get a new set of rings and possibly a piston. Let me know before you order parts, I have some new stuff I never used.

I suppose if that's the case then there is indeed a hole into the crankcase. I would get a stud (just a long threaded stick) and thread it in there with some epoxy on the threads to seal it up. Then use a nut on the stud to secure the left cover. Try to clean up the threads in the case as much as you can because the cleaner it is the better the epoxy will stick.

hey alex, i need a little bit of help. i have an 00 xr 70 and it runs like crap, it spits and sputters, and when you really roll the throttle it back fires and puffs out a small amount of brownish smoke. and at an idle it will idle all over the place and sometimes will even stall itself out, ive cleaned the card perfectly, and adjusting the jet and idle screw will not do anything, im hoping adjusting the valves will fix it but please let me know what you think of it.

I believe the profess will be very similar for your bike. You may have to remove some bodywork to get to the adjusters but the adjustment process should be the same. Make sure the engine is cold and make sure the cam is at TDC compression. As for the clearance, 0.003" will probably work just fine but check the service manual to be sure.

Use a 17mm box wrench, 6 pt preferrably but a 12 pt will probably work fine, then crank away. That cap is supposed to be tightened to 10 ft-lbs. If you crank it on tight it will be very diffiult to remove. That's probably what happened to you.

If i get top dead centre with a bit of wobble on the fly wheel, i can not get my valve adjusters to a similar position. The exhaust one is very loose with loads of play and the intake only will be at spec.
@TheAlexManVideos

Both valves should have a very small amount of play. If the exhaust valve is loose beyond the point you can adjust it, the valve may be bent and preventing the valve from closing fully. Perform a compression check.
