Dawn, no, you just need to remove the handle. No water will shoot out or flood or anything if you are only adjusting the water temp. If you have to remove/replace the valve, then you need to shut the water off somewhere further up the line; either at the main or somewhere along the line that feeds the shower, if that's an option.

I'm not sure if it's turned all the way to hot it should work. There must be something else happening. I don't know what it could be.

I'm in the same boat. Water gets warm. not hot. I'll look at more internet advice, if I find any, and then cut a couple teeth off the limiter to see if I can move the dial hotter. We'll see.
