I think that choppy hand-drawn animation is almost always better than smooth rig-based animation. It has so much more life to it.

I agree, the end result of this looks incredibly awkward and stiff.

I prefer hand drawn animation over 2D rigging but 2D rigging requires a lot of work and should get props. A lot of shows out there are 2D rigged and some of them didn’t even look like it, it looks hand drawn. An example would be Star vs the forces of evil or Wonder over yonder

you're right I should have clarified. In the tool thing on the left when you have bresh selected, there's a fill-type selection, and it's automatically set to pain-on-top. Change that to paint behind. I didn't know it existed for years, now I use it every day.

This was really helpful! The center of gravity looks a bit off in the tweened animation, so that adds to why it looks a little strange compared to the frame-by-frame. But both definitely have their benefits and drawbacks! Thanks!

((Edit: Now I also feel like I’m MORE confused on the topic than I was before. I think my first order of business is just going to be to find whatever program most people use for tweening smh.

When I tried this, I had to change them all to movie clips to animate them in motion tweens... Unsure what I did wrong. (Using CS 5.5) *Edit* Looks like I need to use Classic Tweens, and I was using Motion Tweens. Problem solved, but other questions now left unanswered...
@renanmuller83858 жыл бұрын
+ThatNinjaGuy4 I had the same issue. Motion tween didn't work for me, after I read this comment gave classic tween a try and it worked.

Hey Jazza! Just a quick question for a newby 2D animator. In your average scenario where you find yourself animating a walk cycle, do you find yourself using use tweens, frame by frame, or perhaps a combination of the two? I feel most drawn to frame by frame, but I could see how tweens would help speed up the process to make the more prominent details look really good in frame by frame. Thanks!

Bone tool is a bad idea in Flash unless you're specifically using it for tails or tentacles. Unlike some other programs, If I'm not mistaken, Flash does not allow symbol swapping on bone rigs, which pretty much means that your bone rig is good for pretty much nothing beyond that one specific rigged set of symbols.

This makes the selection box for the symbol be the exact size of the object. It makes it a bit less cluttered, but it's not 100% necessary, only for organizational purposes.

Regarding the control in the fbf verses the tweening, can't you actually replace the foot in the key frame, to show the bend in the foot and the rotation in the back forearm, then in the next key frame replace the foot and back forearm again to their original? Thus giving you that fully animated strut of the character.

Thanks this was helpful. I’ve been doing a lot of frame by frame animations and have been thinking about learning how to rig a character so it would be a bit quicker getting the animations done but still have a hard time with the stiffness of the character. I really don’t mind the frame by frame sometimes. For what I’m doing it just makes more sense to me to just draw everything but it does really suck to have to color in all the frames so I was wondering if rigging would save time with the coloring process? Again great video 👍 and thanks for sharing.

Hi Jazza, Thanks for your tutorials they are awesome. I wanted to ask you a technical question, how do I put a new layer that doesnt modify the others in the keyframe, for example: a head that need to wink or close the mouth in a particular keyframe. I try to go into the head movieclip and make the eyes closed but it applies to all of the animation and the changes applies to the other heads layers too. Thanks in advance, Alan

Hey Jazza, Love your videos, really helpful. Quick question, does this method work with a four-legged animal as I having trouble with a cat. I add the tween and nothing seems to change it plays the animation as though it is frame by frame, what am I doing wrong? Bearing in mind I'm really new to animation so have next to no idea what I'm doing, but pretty sure I followed your video step by step but with four legs instead of two.
