Ceramic coatings are a form of paint protection, like carnauba waxes and paint sealants, but they have better durability. Consumer level ceramic coatings last 1 to 2 years if well maintained. Professional grade coatings can last upwards of 2 years, all the way up to 7 years.
Ceramic coatings are highly hydrophobic, meaning they repel water extremely well. Ceramic coatings also have self-cleaning properties, meaning your paint will keep itself clean of dirt, much more than traditional waxes or sealants. They also add a lot of gloss to your car’s paint.
Here's a recap of the main advantages of ceramic coatings:
- extreme durability (1 to 2 years for commercial versions)
- amazing gloss
- extremely hydrophobic, so water beads and sheets off the paint
- self-cleaning properties make the car easier to wash
- UV protection
Ceramic coatings are also known as glass coatings and nano coatings. They pretty much are mean the same thing, as the main active component in them is silica (SiO2) which forms a glass layer on your car's paint, giving it protection and gloss.
For the purposes of this video, I will apply what I believe to be one of the best ceramic coatings (one of the best glass coatings) available to the public, the CarPro CQuartz UK Edition on my own BMW 435i xDrive Gran Coupe M Sport. Gyeon Quartz also make a great ceramic coating in the form of their Mohs coating. Both products are easy to apply, easy to remove.
If you follow the steps in this video carefully, you'll learn how to apply a ceramic coating to your car and you'll protect your paint with ceramic coatings.

I slowed this video down to 0.50% speed and typed out notes to help me use as a guide to follow! I would like to say this from the bottom of my heart, I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and the fact that you chose to create a very descriptive and easy to understand video which I believe came from you having a genuinely kind soul sir! I will copy and paste the notes I took from your video to try and follow your lead by trying to help the next person prevent a potential disaster if done wrong! LOL CERAMIC COATING & CLEAR COATING Step 1. Pre rinse exterior, tires, door jams Step 2. Degrease the tires, rims & door jams Step 3. Hand wash tires from separate bucket of soap and rinse wheels Step 4. Soap gun the vehicle, wash with hand rags in separate rinse bucket Step 5. Chemical decontamination by spraying a tar remover and an iron filings remover. They're products spray on clear and they change colour when they react for about 5 minutes and then rinse off Step 6. Gently go over using your Clay bar and clay bar lubricant. This will help pick up and remaining contaminates that are embedded in the clear coat. Step 7. Before polishing, ensure the paint is as perfect as possible because these are semipermanent coatings and they seal any defects that are left on the surface. So you're gonna typically compound your paint using compound and your polisher if you have deep scratches and swirl marks. PS. If there isn't many “deep” scratches or swirls, you can use a finishing polish to remove any surface scratches and swirls and give the paint a nice gloss. Step 8. IPA Wipe - After polishing stages you want to make sure to spray an isopropyl alcohol mix on the surface and wipe with a microfibre clothe to remove and residual polishing oils this will ensure a proper bonding of the ceramic coating. Step 9. Ceramic Coating Application Step 10. Take your foam block, wrap your micro suede applicator around it. You make sure you take your ceramic coating bottle and shake it Very Well. Open it and neatly pour enough content to make a line on your micro suede. Step 11. You are going to apply the ceramic coating in a crosshatch pattern meaning up to down and left to right movements. Manufacturers recommend you work in small sections. Typically in “2x2” sections. Step 12. Don't let it dry for too long. Typically in 20-30 seconds the product will flash which means its ready to be removed by a high end microfibre cloth. Using a “Low Pile 300 - 360 GSM cloth” is strongly recommended and it makes removal much easier. NOTE: Throw away the microfibre cloth after using it because the silica dioxide will dry up and potentially scratch and mark the paint if used again Step 13. Once you have removed the ceramic coating, you wait 30-60 minutes and then you spray on some spray silica. The spray silica will prevent any water spots from happening over the next week as the product is curing on the paint and also it would add more gloss and more hydrophobicity to your ceramic coating. So when you have completed all the steps, you have to make suer to let the product cure on the paint for a minimum of 12-24 hours without any contact from water or dust. Ideally, stored in a garage over night. Extra Notes: when you get a typical ceramic coating box, you get a bunch of different products. Typically you will get a silica spray that contains “silica dioxide” , the ceramic coating itself, the foam applicator block and you get some micro suede applicator clothes. ___________________ I apologize if any of my notes are misleading or incorrect and will very much appreciate anybody who is able to correct any of my errors if they find anything! almost all ceramic coatings are good, dont recommend chinese coatings or gyeon, gyeon i think is made by carpro too but they suck, they don't have chemical resistance like the other competitors, you should try 22ple vx3/vx1, gtechniq c1/c0v2/exo, koch chemie 1k nano(it has no hardness, but a ton of gloss, lasts long, and its cheap af), DON'T BUY CQUK if you're on hot climates! but the regular one! i struggled with uk so much, now i use vx3 from 22ple. looking forward to test vx1 it should be way better

It took me 5+ hours to do. I recommend using a proper gas mask or doing it outside, the fumes are strong. The cquartz 3.0 kit only came with one final buff cloth, you will need more.

It took me two days to complete the entire process. Wash with chemical guys clean slate using two bucket method, fall out remover, clay, tape up the car, polish three step, ipa wipe down and apply ceramic coating. The paint on my Tesla was pretty clean as I have paint protection on the front and I wax the car regularly. There were a few swirls in the paint, but very minor.

Aside, is there a particular polish and consumer grade DA polisher you recommend when tackling light to medium scratches prior to applying ceramic coatings. Thanks for the great videos.

Oh you got a lot of great products there! I share that love of buying and trying new products, seeing the results and so happy that the car looks even better! :) Nobody has had a chance to test the long term durability of the 303 Touchless Sealant yet as it's a fairly new product. So I'll report back in a few months. But 303 is a trust-worthy brand and I have no reason to doubt their durability claims of "up to 6 months". Plus you can reapply as often as you with if you see the water beading starting to diminish, or better yet, top that with Bead Maker. :). Have you tried Bead Maker yet? OMG!

@@PanTheOrganizer I have not got to try bead maker yet. The anticipation is killing me lol. I just got it in the mail yesterday and the weather has not been cooperative. I like trying new products and finding just the right mix. I used to have all the time in the world and my cars/trucks were always spotless. However, now I'm a family man with children and all the sports cars and lifted trucks I've had in the past have been turned into SUVs and crossovers lol. I'm currently remodeling my house, helping with the kids and working full time, it doesn't leave much time for my own selfish needs(detailing). That's why I was so attracted to 303's touchless sealant. I also have three vehicles to maintain, so 303 will help me tremendously if the durability is there. It's amazing how far the detailing world and products have come. I remember being a little kid helping my dad wash and wax his van. He too turned the luxury life in for Van's and SUVs lol I had a big family.

U should add that before the coating u can apply Carpro essence. Carpro esssence gives an AMAZING gloss level. And is often used as a fine polish. And if u get minor defects or scratches it's possible to polish it up with carpro essence PLUS. That way u add sio2 and fill minor defects without destroying the coating. I corrected it with scholls s20 first and then tried the carpro essence and the gloss level went backwards... have you found this using that product?? Hey Pan, I’ve been using Car Pro Cquartz on all of my ceramic jobs and my own personal vehicle. It’s the only ceramic coating that I’ve tried. I recently saw that Adams came out with a graphene ceramic coating that supposedly lasts upwards of 7 yrs and offers more protection/hydrophobic properties than regular ceramic coatings. Hello Pan! Thanks for the great and informative video. I just Ceramic coated my car yesterday and today I noticed I have some high spots on the paint. I read a lot of conflicting guides on how to deal with it online. How do you suggest to deal with it while the coat is still not fully cured? Cheers.

I think my viewers agree with you, as in just 2 months since going live, the video has made it to number 1 or number 2 on KZbin for ceramic coatings with almost 300 000 views! :) You can apply 1 layer of CQuartz, but most people apply two coats. After applying the first coat, wait at least 1 hour, then apply the second coat. How did you discover my channel?

I like the way you simplify complex and sequential steps so newbies like me can understand. Question: I've been told Tesla's paint is not as hard as some other car makers. Would that change anything you teach about correcting paint defects?

Thanks Gary! Softer paint is easier to correct through machine polishing, but also easier to scratch to start off with.

@@PanTheOrganizer Discovered you a while researching auto detailing. You're thorough yet you get to the point - which makes it easy to watch. I'm subscribed and almost ready to detail my truck for the very first time....after first practicing on my wife's car of course!!! Got a DA polisher, some clay, and soap. Just need to get a tar remover, iron remover and decide whether to get an all-in-one compound like 3D One or do a 2 step like Sonax Cut Max etc. So many choices!!! I do intend on doing a ceramic coating but I don't have a garage to put my truck in overnight...so we'll see how I figure that one out. Have a great Sunday!!
