So I ended up with athlete's foot about11 months ago. Only the space between the fourth and fifth toe on one foot was affected and I used an over-the-counter for 2 months just to be on the safe side. I really have no idea how I got it in the first place, as it had been months since I was last barefoot in a public space, and I'd never had it before. Anyway, the cream took care of it, and I tossed the socks and shoes I wore while infected. I've been washing my feet everyday and changing socks, cleaned the shower, and I haven't set a bare foot on my floor since I realized what I had. Yet, just last week, I discovered a crack in the crease between the third and fourth toe on the opposite foot, this time. I decided to try Vaseline first, as my feet were fairly dry because I hadn't moisturized in awhile. The crack did close up, but the skin around it has peeled more. Then yesterday, I found a crack in the exact same spot on the other foot. If it were really a fungal infection, would the cracks be healing with Vaseline alone? Cause they sure didn't last time, until I started the antifungal. Also last time, the itching was intense, whereas these two new areas haven't itched at all. I went ahead and started treating them with antifungal, regardless. But if I have got it again, what's causing it?
@thelondonpodiatrist

Cracks can develop because of athletes foot, but can also develop if the skin is dry, or if macerated. After treatment, dry between the toes well after washing and monitor. Any probs see your podiatrist. Thanks for the message! All the best with it.

@thelondonpodiatrist

Hi Donald. Generally all wounds should be covered to reduce the risk of infection. What you cover it with will depend on the type of wound though. After a nail or a skin surgery it's usually Jelonet, gauze and held with tubinette and micropore - a non adherent dressing directly on, gauze to absorb and cushion and then something to hold it in place. Thanks for your question!

Hi, I wonder if you can clarify a few points for me please? As far as I can see we are told that athletes foot is highly contagious and can be spread by skin to skin contact. I have a paranoia that in both washing my feet and applying anti fungal cream both of which require skin to skin contact will leave some spores even after washing my hands perhaps even in finger nails and thus potentially spreading it to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, i have a fungal nail infection and again my concern is touching the nail and surrounding area will transfer spores to my hand or fingernails. I have seen elsewhere that this is unlikely as one would have to be really picking at the area to transfer any spores . Many thanks for your time and gir msking these videos.
@thelondonpodiatrist
@thelondonpodiatrist Жыл бұрын
Hi Phil! You can spread it to your hands when applying antifungal cream to your feet, and therefore to other parts of your body. It is not that highly contagious but still contagious. Just wash your hands well after applying the cream. Our skin generally has good antibacterial and antifungal properties but this can be inhibited if the skin is broken or if you break it down from scratching. Fingers and fingernails are way less likely to develop fungal infection as they are drier and see the sunlight. If you have any concerns, see your local podiatrist / dermatologist who can give you more tailored treatment. Hope this helps, and thanks for the question!

@@thelondonpodiatrist Thank you for taking the time to respond. Could I ask a supplementary question. Last year I used quite a lot of micozanole for a bad case of athletes foot and jock itch for about 6 to 7 weeks (applied whilst using non powdered nitrile gloves). I did this on doctor's orders and also wanted to make sure I had zapped everything. I know that 4 weeks is the recommended maximum period and was wondering if the fungus could have built up some resistance to this cream. My local pharmacist thinks it is unlikely because it's been a year since I last used it. Thank you again. I consider people such as yourself the real heroes of the internet which is often used to promote a lot of unpleasant stuff and disinformation
@thelondonpodiatrist
@thelondonpodiatrist Жыл бұрын
@philbell5774 There is sometimes resistance to antifungal creams. This can be the fungus resisting certain mechanisms of the product or if the person has a weakened immune system. If you're struggling to resolve a fungal infection, try switching the type of active ingredient in the cream. There's a few over the counter creams. Also, bear in mind that although fungus may be the most likely cause, other conditions can mimic fungus, so skin scrapings can be sent to a lab if needed. Thanks again, and wishing you the best!

@@thelondonpodiatrist Thank you once again. I really appreciate it. I was thinking about using terbafine but as I have a diagnosis of sub acute cutaneous lupus which is the form that only affects the skin when exposed to UV light. I did read that terbafine could increase solar sensitivity in individuals but this referred to oral dosage. The only recorded case of solar sensitivity induced by topical application was of a care worker who was regularly using terbafine on her regular elderly patients over many, many months. My own thoughts are that perhaps I should use the topical cream as very little is likely to be absorbed systemically in a relatively short period of time.

Hi! Yes, it can spread to other parts of the body. This is easily done if you scratch the infected area and then another part of your body, or transferring via towels. Ring worm is common name for a fungal infection on the skin, but isn't caused by a worm! The medical terms for these are tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea capitus... depending on the area of the body affected. Antifungal cream normally works. It's not my area of specialty though so, see your Dr. Best of luck with it. 🙌

Hi Joyce, can you see your local podiatrist? They can take a good look and probably shave the callus down for you, making it comfortable again. Sometimes, orthotics can also help offload any areas that redevelop callus quickly. Thanks for commenting! :)
