How to Apply Compound, Polish & Wax by Hand - Quik Tips

So, your car’s not looking quite as good as it used to, and you would like to dedicate some extra time detailing the paint to getting it looking its best. You have done your research & you’ve decided you want to do a multi-step system by hand.
It's possible to get great results using a compound, polish or wax by hand and the process isn’t extremely complicated as long as you use the right products, you use clean, premium accessories and the right technique. So, how do you apply compound, polish and wax by hand?
Begin by washing your car with a premium car wash that pH balanced to remove any loose contaminants from the surface. Then, evaluate the paint to determine if there are above surface contaminants.
Next, run your clean, dry fingertips over the paint. If the paint feels rough, this tells us there are above surface contaminants bonded on top of the paint. It’s important to remove these contaminants in order to get best results. It's easy to remove above surface contaminants with one of Meguiar’s consumer clay kits like Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Clay Kit or Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit. If your paint already feels completely smooth, skip this step and move on.
For this step, visually inspect your paint with proper lighting for below surface defects like swirls, scratches, oxidation and stains. If you have light to moderate below surface defects you want to use a scratch remover or clear coat safe compound like Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound. This product is the perfect way to remove defects in the paint without hazing or marring the surface like a traditional compound.
When using a compound by hand we recommend using a Meguiar’s Soft Foam Applicator Pad. Dispense a small amount of Ultimate Compound directly on the pad. With light to moderate pressure, work a 2’ x 2’ section for about 1-2 minutes in an overlapping pattern.
Be sure to apply even pressure over the pad. Wipe the residue off before it dries with a fresh, clean Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel. Then, turn the towel over to a clean side for your final wipe. Re-apply as needed, working in sections over the entire vehicle.
Once you’ve removed the below surface paint defects, the next step is to polish, especially if you are going for the best results. Using a polish further refines the paint surface & adds polishing oils for maximum gloss and depth of shine. This is an optional step that will enhance depth of shine on any color, but it’s most effective on darker and more brilliant colors.
One of best polishes is Meguiar’s Ultimate Polish Pre-Waxing Glaze.
To apply by hand, we recommend using a Soft Foam Applicator Pad. Dispense a small amount directly on the pad. Apply to a 2’ x 2’ section at a time using light to moderate pressure in a circular pattern, making 4-6 overlapping passes per section. Wipe off immediately before it dries with a Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel. Again, turn your towel to a clean portion for the final wipe. Work in sections like this over the vehicle.
Applying a coat of wax protection after you’ve prepared the paint with a compound and polish will help preserve the work you’ve done, and keep the paint looking better, for longer.
In addition, wax provides significant protection against elements in the environment, added gloss, and that all important water beading action which can help your car stay cleaner & makes washing and maintaining easier.

That Ultimate Compound is absolutely great. I live in Finland just bought a second hand car in winter. As I made a "spring wash" it had scuff marks and little scratches here and there. Also under the door handels it was horribly scuffed. The Utimate compund made it all gone. If you don't have a machine polisher, it's OK as the Ultimate Compund is easy and fast to use by hand only. Of course deeper scratches are impossible to cure, but the compound makes them look better also.

Hello, love the video. When I compound/polish each 2x2 section how many sections can I use with that same pad until I have to clean it? Or can I keep using the same pad throughout the compounding/polishing phase. And if I have to clean it, what is the best way to clean the pad before going to the next section? Thanks

Typically when applying products by hand with a foam applicator pad you do not need to clean the pad during the job; however if you feel there is some kind of contamination on the pad you can certainly grab a new/fresh applicator pad and use it. Once done with the job you can wash the applicator pads in your washing machine just as you would your other towels.

Okay, so it all began with my purchase of a 3100psi pressure washer, and now I've gone down the detailing rabbit hole. Once I'm done, what do I wash with for the next few weeks? The best wax Maguire's head was about 20 years ago Maguire's Gold class was you could throw your keys in the hood and they would slide right off it'll make it like that anymore I think the McGuire's now is a little bit watered down for the spray waxes and leather cleaners.still use them

As is shown in the video we recommend a foam applicator for application and a good quality microfiber towel for wipe off. No, you do not typically need a different towel for each section but you will at least want a towel or two for each step of the process depending on the size of the vehicle.

First time compounder…. I used the UC about 5days ago one one Jeep door just to see how it would work with a few small scratches and lite swirls. Well, I just wash my car and when looking at that door in the sunlight I see all these fingerprint swirl marks (I’m not sure how to describe it). Yes, you can use Ultimate Compound after washing with Ultimate Wash & Wax. Ideally you would compound before waxing but if you already have Ultimate Wax on the surface you can certainly still use the compound as it will strip the wax as you work.

UK here, I’ve just used all those products on my MK1 Golf Gti and it looks amazing however, once the sun came out you can see hazy makes across the bonnet, why is that and what have I done wrong? I don’t have any swirls or anything like that just a hazy like marks.

There is no reason you cannot use Ultimate Compound to remove defects in the paint before applying a ceramic coating. That being said you will still need to follow the coating manufacturers recommendations for prep before applying their coating.

How often you need to clay or compound is related to the condition of the paint at any given point and the environmental attacks the paint faces in your particular situation. You only clay when you have bonded contaminants stuck to the paint. You only compound when you have defects (scratches, swirl marks, water spots, oxidation, etc.) in the paint It is also relative to how well you maintain the paint between waxing. If you maintain the car well you will likely not have to do all 3 steps every time you detail/wax your car. And as it relates to how long a wax will last... How long any protection/wax lasts is highly variable and depends on a number of factors related to the condition of the paint, previous prep, and the environmental elements the vehicle is exposed to. In very general terms we recommend the average person wax their vehicle 3-4 times per year and often at least once a year will include the full process. Hope that helps!

Assuming you are referencing application of the compound the pattern is not the issue as much as the fact that the product does have to be worked into the surface with some (moderate) pressure. You also only want to do about a 2X2 ft area and then immediately wipe off because you don't want the product to dry at all.

I’ve been using Meguiars professional version (the ones in the yellowish bottles with the 2 digit #s. I have the compounds in the polishing bottles in the CarNuba wax) for close to 15 years. How does that compare to the “ultimate” Version shown in this video ? I still have my orbital dual action buffer with Meguiars name on it and the Maguires black bag. I bought this kit between 15 to 20 years ago. I still use it to this day that dual action polisher is incredible

An orbital buffer can save time/energy while applying products more evenly but the results will likely be similar to hand application. A good DA (dual action) machine is where you start to see quite a bit better performance especially when removing defects.

The shelf life is 3-5 years is stored in a temperature-controlled environment but it can certainly last longer. If the consistency of the wax is still the same it should be perfectly fine. 👍

I have made these steps a couple of days ago. The result is great, but if I check the car with lamp I see white patches where the compound or polish isn't removed completely. They cannot be seen in sunlight. How can I remove it? I have also used ceramic spray on it. :(

If you have product residue you missed during wipe-off you could do a few things to remove it including the use of a good all purpose cleaner, dish washing liquid & water, or even simply reapplying the compound it those areas again. Keep in mind any of these things will strip the wax so you will likely want to reapply wax in those areas after removing the product residue.

It is never ideal but often as long as the panel itself is not hot to the touch and/or the weather is not extreme you can get away with this. For application of the compound and polish you want to make sure the product does not dry at all so you may need to work a smaller area and wipe off more quickly.

I have very very light swirls. Mostly from hand drying even with a drying aid. Don't have access to outside electricity right now. Going to painfully polish the car by hand. Do I need to up the cut since I'm not using a machine? I would use a polish with a buffer for this condition paint. Since my hands aren't as effective, Do I need to up the cut? Meaning compound instead of Polish? Or can I still remove the light swirls with a Polish? Thanks

That is entirely dependent on how deep the scratches are but also how hard your paint is. You will not be able to figure that out without trying a product. Many times swirl/towel marks are more stubborn than you might suspect so the need for a good compound like our Ultimate Compound might be necessary. Keep in mind it is very much safe and easy to use so there really is no down side if you do need to use a mild but effective compound like our Ultimate Compound. Hope that helps!

That simply means you do not have a clear coat. Yes, that is what compounds do. They remove a very small amount of paint which then removes the defects in the surface. Most vehicles for a few decades now have been clear coated (clear paint on top) so you just don't see color coming off. Any vehicle with a single-stage paint (only color coat) will do this. Nothing to worry about.

Depends on the carrier in the compound. Water based will really just need a wash down but oil based will need the oils removing before applying anything that you hope to bond to the paint, but for me I'd always use some sort of wipe down product after polishing. Doesn't take long and it's always better to make sure that your results are true corrections rather than any oils hiding things.

How long any given wax lasts can be highly variable and depends on a number of factors including the environment it is exposed to. Generally speaking for a daily driver we recommend waxing at least 3-4 times per year but in some cases, on a well-maintained vehicle, they could certainly last longer.

We cannot speak for the other steps possibly required without knowing all the details surrounding the current condition of the paint as well as what exactly it is you are hoping to do for it. That being said to remove oxidation and swirl marks will require the use of an effective/safe compound like our Ultimate Compound. Although in some cases it may not be necessary to apply to the entirety of the vehicle most of the time that is exactly what you should do and is not something you should have any concern doing.

You can get similar results by hand. It just takes longer.

It really depends on the condition of your paint and how hard or soft it is. A good DA machine is going to achieve better results and in some cases be necessary to adequately remove defects. If you are simply spreading wax either method is fine but of course the machine might help you spread it more evenly and will certainly save time and energy.

Don't put wax on before polish, only after you polish. If you put wax on first you won't be able to polish the paint because a layer of wax will be between the paint and whatever polish compound you use.

How long any wax/protection lasts is highly variable and depends on a number of factors including the environment the vehicle is exposed to. That being said, for most daily drivers we recommend you wax at least 3-4 times per year. As far as the best protection you would certainly be better off with one of our newer waxes like our Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax (link below). It will provide far superior protection and water beading to the Cleaner/Wax you have been using. What compound you use typically has no bearing on which wax you choose. There is no issues using any wax you choose after Ultimate Compound. As far as polishing, polish is often an optional step. Depending on the color and condition of your paint polish may or may not have a noticeable impact. The darker the color the more shine you might see whereas on a white or silver paint, you may not see as much of an impact.

Without knowing the severity of the swirls and scratches or how hard your paint is that would be difficult to answer confidently. That being the case and the fact that swirl marks and scratches are often more stubborn than you might suspect we would typically recommend Ultimate Compound. It is more effective while still being very safe and easy to use.

Not entirely sure what you are asking here? If compounding and polishing you should first compound the whole car (or section that needs it) working a 2X2 area at a time and wiping off immediately before the product has a chance to dry. After you finish compounding the entire vehicle (or the affected areas) you will do the exact same thing with the polish.

I've got some hazing left behind after using Scratch X to remove a scratch. The hazing is not visible in direct sunlight but you can see a slight whitish haze when inside a dimly lit place like inside a garage. Which Meguiar's product will remove the haze safely, Ultimate Compound or Ultimate Polish?

It is far better to do it if you want to do any compounding/polishing. if not, no clay needed. If it's a fresh new car, just clean it then coat/wax it. imo

Clay is designed specifically to remove contaminants that are bonded to the surface. If you have bonded contaminants stuck to your paint yes, it would make sense to clay first before proceeding to compound, polish, and wax. Yes, these are absolutely what you would want to try if the fender is simply faded/oxidized. 👍 Depending on which wax you use you can wash the vehicle as soon as you like or possibly wait up to 24 hours after waxing. Typically and hopefully there is no need to wash a car right after waxing.

Why clay before compounding? Isn’t the compound going to remove anything that the clay would anyway? I thought clay was more for light bonded materials and compounding was more abrasive.

They are designed to remove different things. Clay is designed to remove above surface contaminants that are bonded to the surface. That can depend on the specific wax you are using. Traditional waxes often you wait until the product dries to a haze and turns chalky before wipe off. Some of the newer synthetic formulations do not dry and can be wiped off almost immediately. Drying time can also vary depending on the weather conditions and how much product was applied.

We may use the term "polish" differently than you do but if what you really mean is how often should you compound that depends entirely if you have defects in the paint you want/need to remove. You can certainly try the Ultimate Polish but keep in mind it is primarily a polish and has only minimal defect removing capability. In many cases, especially if the paint is harder, you will need a compound to remove even light defects. There is also no reason to fear Ultimate Compound as it is very safe and easy to use.

Polish is an optional step in many cases. Whether or not you choose to polish can have a varying impact based on the color and condition of your paint as well as your personal desires for it. That is impossible to answer considering the number of variables involved. How bad is the oxidation? What product are you using? Are you working by hand or machine? What kind of machine? What kind of pads? What speed and pressure are you using when running the machine? And of course how thick hard and thick is the paint on that particular vehicle? That being said when working with a mild/safe compound like our Ultimate Compound by hand, orbital, or DA Polisher you can typically use it as much as is necessary. If you are not making any progress during a particular job after 2-3 applications you probably need to reassess and consider the next aggressive method if possible. I also have another question if that’s ok - when I reach the polishing stage (ultimate polish), only on my bonnet, once I have buffed it in and I come to wipe it off with a micro fibre towel, it is leaving behind streaks. I know this is a broad question but is there any idea as to why? Or what variables could be causing this?

If this is only happening on one area of the car that paint likely has some kind of contamination that has landed there or the paint is possibly in much worse condition in that area. How old is this vehicle? The hood or other top/horizontal surfaces are always the first to go. It may be that the paint is more porous because if it's condition which is making it hold on to product residue more than normal. That being said the most common reason for this is typically drying time. The polish should only be applied in 2X2 ft area and then wiped off immediately. It should not dry at all. If it is drying that would make it more difficult to remove. If your environment is particularly hot and/or humid that could also have an impact on this. Just two possibilities. In some cases you could get away with this but most of the time it is going to be safer and more effective to use foam applicator pads to apply product. The foam will help compound work better and many terry cloth towels greatly increase your chance of creating swirl/towel marks. For removal a high quality microfiber towel is always better on paint.

A good compound like our Ultimate Compound is effective but still very safe. On your average paint you could use it time and time again to remove any number of defects in the paint. The choice to use a compound is based on whether or not you have defects in the paint you are hoping to remove.

Although there is certainly not requirement that you use two different waxes yes you can certainly do that. Just make sure to follow that order as the Hybrid Ceramic Wax will work on top of any other wax, sealant, or coating.
