Looking for a way to help blend your grays during your grow out? The Dye Strip Technique is a really great option!
What I love about this way to go grey... is that you can be creative with it! Since we all have unique gray grow out patterns, you decide the size, shape and location of where you want your strip to be!
I figured out the best way for me and recorded the process for you.
How to apply the Gray Blending Technique at Home:
Step1: PLAN
Determine where you want the strip of color as well as its size and shape.
Step 2: SECTION HAIR
Section off about a 1.5-2” x 4-5″ strip of hair along your part line. Hold this section up in a clip.
Step 3: PROTECT SURROUNDING GRAYS
Cover up the sides of the strip to protect your grays from accidentally being colored.
Options you can use (and may have in your kitchen) Tinfoil, Saran Wrap.
If your want to go the extra mile to make sure no dye gets on the surrounding hair, you can add a thin layer of Vaseline next to the line before you cover it up. The only problem with petroleum jelly is that is can be hard to get out.
Step 4: APPLY THE DYE
Part the strip down the middle. Carefully apply the color to the roots of the strip of hair. It’s best not to use a bottle… you have much more control with a brush.

Step 5: RINSE THE COLOR
Rinse out the dyed strip really good before you get in the shower to shampoo and condition. This way you make sure none of the color gets into your gray grow out.
If you applied vaseline and are have trouble getting it out… some clarifying shampoo should help.
Step 6: STYLE HAIR
Part your hair down the middle of the dyed strip and style as usual.
Repeat the process every 4 to 6 weeks or so until you feel ready to flip your part to the gray side and show everyone your fabulous silver hair you’ve been so cleverly growing out under there!! Once you flip your part to the gray side, the dyed strip will grow out underneath your gray hair and you won’t even notice it!
Here is a quick overview of what the grey blending Dye Strip Technique is.
