Looking for a way to help blend your grays during your grow out? The Dye Strip Technique is a really great option!
What I love about this way to go grey... is that you can be creative with it! Since we all have unique gray grow out patterns, you decide the size, shape and location of where you want your strip to be!
I figured out the best way for me and recorded the process for you.
How to apply the Gray Blending Technique at Home:
Step1: PLAN
Determine where you want the strip of color as well as its size and shape.
Step 2: SECTION HAIR
Section off about a 1.5-2” x 4-5″ strip of hair along your part line. Hold this section up in a clip.
Step 3: PROTECT SURROUNDING GRAYS
Cover up the sides of the strip to protect your grays from accidentally being colored.
Options you can use (and may have in your kitchen) Tinfoil, Saran Wrap.
If your want to go the extra mile to make sure no dye gets on the surrounding hair, you can add a thin layer of Vaseline next to the line before you cover it up. The only problem with petroleum jelly is that is can be hard to get out.
Step 4: APPLY THE DYE
Part the strip down the middle. Carefully apply the color to the roots of the strip of hair. It’s best not to use a bottle… you have much more control with a brush.
Color Brush:
amzn.to/3FguDM9
I used this Demi-Permanent Hair Dye:
amzn.to/3J9drte
Step 5: RINSE THE COLOR
Rinse out the dyed strip really good before you get in the shower to shampoo and condition. This way you make sure none of the color gets into your gray grow out.
If you applied vaseline and are have trouble getting it out… some clarifying shampoo should help.
Step 6: STYLE HAIR
Part your hair down the middle of the dyed strip and style as usual.
Repeat the process every 4 to 6 weeks or so until you feel ready to flip your part to the gray side and show everyone your fabulous silver hair you’ve been so cleverly growing out under there!! Once you flip your part to the gray side, the dyed strip will grow out underneath your gray hair and you won’t even notice it!
Here is a quick overview of what the grey blending Dye Strip Technique is.

I’m doing this! I am only 8 weeks into this grow out journey & am already doubting if I can stay firm. I’m 50 with what looks like will be a white streak around my face with more salt & pepper at the back. Such a shock seeing the white after being brunette for so long. The dye strip technique is wonderful for letting some silver shine through but basically growing it out secretly. Your video is inspiring, thank you! 🤍

Super excited to try this. I just turned 51 and have been grey since 25. I guess i had to double my life before I was ready! The earth did not stop spinning during Covid when I had 6 months of roots...but it took me until now to get the courage. I'm excited because this means I get to do it my own way without having to be harsh or mean to me. My hair is fashion colors purple and pink...so I plan to make the most of it while I have it and it will be REALLY CLEAR when I am cutting off those last pink bits in a couple years.

I was on Pinterest and saw someone did this technique. I then came here to KZbin and found your video. You have given me something to truly consider as I am NOT ready for the gray but it looks so nice. I was doing henna but I think the temporary color just may work. I’ve been trying to tough it out but it’s hard for me. I can see the beauty of gray hair on other people but I haven’t done to this point for myself yet. Thank you and take care!

I have been doing this! I use edge control to protect the hairs I don’t want to dye. I didn’t get the idea here, but it is how I am transitioning to gray. I am finding this to be a good way to transition and still work in a professional setting! The gray grow out is getting harder to hide but I have been doing this for 8 months. What I really need now is a hair cut! The hairs that were once dyed every four weeks are really pale and brassy now. I use purple shampoo and a hair mask to help with the brassy. Soon I will cut my hair at the line; the longer I wait the longer my hair will be! They do say that patience is a virtue.

Thank you for this! I am going to give it a try. My hair is not colored and is a dirty, blonde color. I just noticed some silver sprouting up at the crown of my head. I don’t have any silver yet anywhere else, so I really did not know what to do about this silver dollar sized silver sprout coming up in this one spot. I want it to grow out without looking weird. Maybe I should just color half of it? I am also at a ugly hair type phase, as I am growing out a pixie that I have had for several years. I hope I can figure out How to choose the right color without any experience!

Look around your workplace. If no other women are grey, don't go grey. As much as people want to say grey is natural and great, there is still a significant youth bias in some workplaces. In my workplace grey is fine but in others maybe not.

Is the non-permanent hair color the way to go as when you are fully gray, you don't have to grow out this strip. Also, I'm thinking this technique doesn't work if you mostly wear your hair back in a pony tail.
@ireneclaire
@ireneclaire 3 ай бұрын
Hello! I’m not understanding your question about using color when you’re fully gray. 🤔 This is method is designed for parting styles so if you’re pulling your hair back the gray will show.
