During covid 4 years ago, I decided to go gray. I remember the shock in the mirror as it was growing out. But the reason I followed through was the expense of color upkeep, and also I was really tired of having appointments every 6 weeks for touch-ups. Now that I'm retired I love being free of demanding schedules and appointments. I've decided to look in the mirror less and enjoy life more.

I transitioned from medium brown to my natural gray by heavy highlights and frequent cuts. It took about a year and - I love it. I was having to touch up my roots about every 3 1/2 weeks and I don’t miss that at all. I keep it in a short to medium length bob and I have received compliments from random strangers! Not once when I was coloring the gray did that ever happen. I agree that you have to be ready. I waited until I retired because I knew in my particular work environment I would be seen as old and not relevant and I didn’t feel like facing that character assassination. It was a hostile working environment. But if you’re ready, just do it and I can guarantee you’ll love it.

You look beautiful - the colour really suits you. I just got to the 5 month stage and realised I wasn’t feeling so good about myself and I wasn’t ready to be a woman with grey hair. I think I envisioned it would have a different texture. So I just dyed it again last week and I feel great. Maybe later I’ll give another go but for now this my decision. I’ve had long hair always and tomorrow I’m going to have it cut into a medium shag cut and I’m excited about it. 🎉

We all know the pros and cons of going gray, but one thing I'd like to point out to all the ladies who are thinking about it, and something I've discovered by pure chance when my hair fully grew into its natural shades of gray, is that you will look softer and in turn younger, yes, you heard right. All those lines and wrinkles will diffuse and blur. Nature has its own way of giving and taking. Best of luck on your journey whatever you decide.

Throwing no shade…but…she’s gonna love it for a few months and then when she gets the reminder of the constant half inch of silver grow out 7-ten days after dyeing it, well, then she’s going to remember why she was going grey. I know. I’ve lived it. Fully completed transitioning to natural hair color twice. I’m not 100% happy with it, but I was also not happy with constantly chasing that grow out skunk stripe. And the dye doesn’t stick to the greys as well either, so you end up with inconsistent color. I think aging is really challenging and THAT is what we are really struggling with, because it’s hard not recognizing yourself in the mirror anymore.

I’ve been covering my grey for over 30 years and am done trying to chase it away. And although I have always been conscientious of my upkeep, I am really tired of trying to continually look younger than I am. I am in great shape, I workout, take great care of my skin, wear makeup very well and am super fashion conscientious. It’s a lotta work and something’s gotta give! I started going grey at 16 and colored my hair, every month, for decades. In my early 40's I decided I'd had enough and started to let it go. After a few inches had grown out, I went to the salon and the stylist had the brilliant idea of putting in some high and lowlights through my hair that would just soften the look of the transition. It worked great and by the time that had grown out, I didn't need to get it done again. That was a decade ago and, I can honestly say, I've never had more compliments on my hair as I have had since going grey. 💜

The dark was a little too dark, but it did look better. Some people don't look that great in gray hair, gray clothing, or silver jewelry. Like me! My skin has gold undertones and my eyes are olive/hazel. Gray clashes. Whereas my husband has stormy blue eyes, and gray looks AMAZING on him, better than the light brown he had when he was young. Tried growing my gray out but it clashed with my golden/olive tones. Went back to medium blonde (my natural color before gray) and look much healthier.

In two weeks those white roots are gonna come in and look so much worse because the colour is so dark. If you’re dyeing at home, older arms get tireder faster and ache for longer. This is WHY we go grey. With me I needed a root touch up by the end of the week because there was so much white in it. Hair stylists don’t consider tomorrow enough they’re just concerned with now. When she decides to go grey she has nothing to worry about because her grey distribution was beautiful and perfect.

I agree with you I think the grays and silver that was coming in suited her, especially her eyes or at least would’ve gone a lighter tone not that dark. Honey blonde, Ash or strawberry blonde would’ve been very nice and you don’t have to worry about the roots showing, it kind of blends in. You could get away with letting it go past six weeks. She is beautiful. She mentioned not liking the warmer part of her hair. I wonder if maybe she would've liked her grey coming in a little more if just the parts of her hair that were brassy and warm were colored or toned to a cool shade to be more copacetic with the cool silver growing in. And then do a little blending to blur the demarcation line. I think I would have tried something like that to see if I liked it before coloring the whole thing. Of course, that's just my two cents and I am glad she is happy with the results for her.

Deciding to go natural is not just a physical transition, but a mental one. A mental one that lasts not just a month or so, but one that usually lasts at least a full year. Let's face it, if someone is used to seeing themselves with colored hair for 50+ years and then you have 3" of natural hair competing with colored hair, it's perfectly normal to go back and forth and doubt yourself. It takes a lot of patience and commitment to follow through but the end result can be stunning, along with the sense of freedom of not being a slave to your roots. Reference "Silver Hair" on social media platforms so you can relate to other women who are going through the same thing you are and also receive encouragement along your journey. If it doesn't work out, you can always go back to the dye.

I “cheated” and had my hairdresser bleach some old color and blend my white/greys in, but I still had growing-out to power through. I made and am thrilled! It’s still weird seeing a lady in the mirror with stark-white hair versus the dark auburn I used to have, but it feels like me. My stylist was great. She kept me informed as to how much grey was growing in. About a year before Covid, (at my request), she began letting my silver show (colouring only some sections.) Then Covid came. My first cut after lockdown ended, I went from a overgrown bob style to a pixie cut, and no more colouring was needed. Absolutely love my silver hair and it actually enhances my face's skin tone. But I understand it's not for everyone, especially those that have dull grey hair. Also, growing out grey hair when your hair is long would be much more difficult.

I decided to let my natural hair color be 18 months ago & am very pleased. My hair is incredibly soft and shiny. No more broken ends jutting out of the top of my head. It’s a lovely color that has dimension & seems like the color your guest would have had. As we get older darker hair color look harsh. We have to adjust our make up to deal with the contrast because our skin becomes more delicate. I am still learning about the change in color for clothing etc but it’s actually fun. Lots of discoveries. If anyone is considering letting their hair be its natural color, I hope this is helpful!

I gave up coloring my hair about three years ago. It was a losing battle keeping up with the roots, and the monotone color was not flattering. I still have a few inches of color left at the ends, but as my husband trims my hair every couple months or so, I figure it will be all gone by next spring. No regrets going silver, and I am never going back to being a slave to hair color.

I stopped coloring my hair in 2019. My hair is so much healthier. I agree -- it does make you look older. But I think it actually works better with my skin tone. It's not fighting the natural way my skin -- my face -- is aging (eek) but true. I don't love it but I do like it more than keeping it dyed. Keeping it gray is the right choice for me. Right now.

I love it but I’m not sure everyone else does. I see people I haven’t seen in a few years and they say nothing which makes me feel like it doesn’t look good. Clearly I’m thinking too much about this. I did the same during the first lock down and I love my natural god given highlights. I think as we get older our skin complexion changes and the darker hair that we had when younger, (I was a brunette), doesn't really suit us when we are older. I think Elizabeth's dyed hair was a couple of shades too dark for her complexion and to me it didn't really match but made it look like she was trying to look younger instead of embracing her age and growing older gracefully. She's just not ready yet, but when she does she will look amazing.

This is an emotional decision for women; many strangers will stop me in a store and express how they ¨wish¨ they could stop coloring their hair but they just they don´t have the nerve. Every single day, someone complements my beautiful hair; it´s very striking and I am fortunate that it works well with my complexion & eye color AND that it is a nice silver white. I love my wisdom, my age, and my hair. I do not feel old at all.

I grew in my silver for the second time during covid and was so glad I did! It's really liberating to not think about getting my roots done every 3 weeks. Plus I've had every color ever. For me it wasn't overwhelming to grow in. Plus guys don't ask the question if the grey hair will wear you or the other way around. I wish more women felt empowered to grow in their natural color but at the end of the day you have to have fun with your hair and enjoy whatever color you want.

I have struggled with deciding to go grey for well over two years. I had kind of a dark warm blond for most of my life. I didn't feel grey but I wanted to stop all the coloring. My roots were such a contrast that I felt the grey showed in 4 weeks making me color my hair so often. I didn't have the time, money or energy for all that coloring. I just didn't feel grey. I watched so many KZbin videos to try to help with the transition to no avail. I would grow an inch and dye my hair again. I finally found MY solution!!! I changed to a much lighter, less brassy blond. I am now a light neutral blond. The shade blends with my grey. I colored hair myself and missed a few strands. As it fades it gets closer to my almost naturally white hair and blends well. I don't have to mess much with the growth as it comes in. I can go well over 2 months without coloring. A great compromise and I love being almost grey.

Interesting. I think a lot of women mistakenly feel that when they color their greying hair they need to go lighter than the color they had as young adults. In fact, if you were brunette, you probably look more vibrant as a brunette than as some washed out 'blonde.' However, the issue remains that this look lasts maybe a week and then the roots (in my case white) ruin the whole thing. That would be why I would cinsider ditching the coloring. I despise the inevitable roots.

I transitioned to gray in 2013 at 47 years old. It was the best decision I ever made. My hubs says I look YOUNGER with my silver hair. People swear I am highlighting it, but it’s just the gray pattern I have. So many women I know over the past eleven years who have seen my hair, have grown theirs out, too. It emboldened them to make the transition and they love it. Only one decided to go back to dyeing hers. I 100% agree it has to be the right time and you have to be fully ready for it. You know when you are. I fully support any woman’s choice (in many more ways than one) and it is HER decision. No judgement ever. You have to love yourself and if dyeing your hair makes you feel more like “you”, then keep rockin’ it! Just love you!

Personally I think she'd look amazing with grey hair but Justin was right, she's not ready for it yet and you have to be ready and confident enough to go through the transition process which takes 2 years +. I'd been dying my hair for 30 years and during the first lockdown I decided to stop and let my natural greys grow through as I was having to dye my hair every 3 weeks and I was sick of putting chemicals on my hair so often and the thought of doing that for the next 20 years of my life was what convinced me to stop. I love my silver/white natural highlights which would cost me an absolute fortune if I was to have them done professionally. Not all of us are married to a top stylist like Justin ya know. 😂 Despite being one of the youngest of my friends, I'm the first one to embrace my natural hair and when I was transitioning my friends thought i was mad and they didn’t like it at all, but when I had the last bit of horrible orangey brown cut off and was fully transitioned, most of them changed their minds and admitted it looked good. That's where the confidence has to be there, you have to really want to do it and be determined because otherwise other peoples opinions will make you doubt your decision and will undermine your confidence. Do i regeret it? No way. I love the freedom of not being a slave to the bottle every few weeks.

A lot also has to do with the cut and style. Going grey isn't an easy choice, but, having the constant battle with yourself every 4-6 weeks of should I or shouldn't I dye it again gets really tiring and I think does more damage to ourselves (just speaking of my own experience here) emotionally than it does if you've come so far with growing out the grey and maybe tried a new cut and style and then if you can't handle the grey, you dye it again.

Went grey 8 years ago at age 55 and never looked back. The sores on my head went away immediately which my hairdresser said wasn’t due to the dye, yeah right. I grew up in a beauty shop and had everything done to my hair. For goodness sake, it’s just hair. The worst part was hearing all the negative projections from other people, their feelings about going grey! It’s so sad our society equates hair color with youth and being ageless! You have to be secure in your decision or it may be an emotional roller coaster ride...... then stick to it. Hats became my friend in the growing out phase then a short cut to get rid of the dyed ends. Brunette to white was not easy to grow out but I never questioned it ever once I made the commitment, no more dye for me!

As we age our complexion changes, that's why our hair goes grey to complement our skin. If we dyeiur hair too dark it can make us look older as the contrast is too severe. You natural greys/whites looked awesome and I personally think you would look fab with natural hair, but as Justin said, you have to be ready for it and I don't think you are there yet but at least you have had a glimpse and know you'll look great if and when you decide to go for it.
