I started this process on Thursday after watching your video. This is a great idea. I had about 1 1/2 new growth, naturally dark brown hair. Went to the salon,explained process/ video and am pleased with results. The stylist was apprehensive, kept stearing me towards highlights, stripping, other time/ costly processes. After looking at me like I was crazy, she finally agreed to do it. For me, this was the way to go. Thank you both for the great information.

I’m lucky my hair is doing this naturally. The top portion of my hair doesn’t have a lot of grays so there isn’t a noticeable demarcation. But every underneath has harsh demarcation line. So this has made growing out my gray easier.

I ve embraced my natural silver this year by having my hairdresser put a half head of foils in to breakup the regrowth. It’s worked really well and getting lots of positive feedback. Another way a friend did hers was using semi permanent hair colour slightly lighter that your dyed hair colour. It doesn’t leave an obvious demarcation line and you just keep going lighter and lighter. 👩🏽🦳

THIS is the comment I've been looking for. How did she do the final transition? My hair isn't grey, or even silver-; it's a startling white! Yikes! I'm hoping that it will get light enough for a grey Demi, or high/ low lights? IDK what to do..? How did your friend do it? Thanks in advance, and I'm terrified about the entire process. I bought a real human hair topper that hides the line of demarcation, for now. Everytime my hair gets lighter, I have to buy a lighter colored hair piece.. then I get close to blonde,, is where I stall out because I look awful as a blonde, and even worse with white hair!!! My daughter put a stop to it all and told me to go back to my original light Auburn. My hair is growing out so fast tho,, because I'm on HRT and collagen peptides powder.. that now I'm having to dye my hair every 4 weeks, or the pure white line of demarcation is very noticable -; even under the topper. The worse part of it: the white hair is the same color as my scalp and it gives the optical illusion of thinning/balding hair! I'm I'm a real pickle of a situation. I guess I'm just gonna let the dyed hair get as light as it can, then start dying it grey. I really wanted to get away from dying it altogether,, SMH. What's a gurl to do? I really can't afford expensive salon treatments. I did it once and they stripped the colored hair and made me dishwasher blonde with high and low lights. I looked awful, my hair was so damaged.. I paid 400$, I swore never again... Any suggestions? Thanks.

This is by far the best method I’ve seen that suits my goal of growing out my grey, sans expensive and repeat visits to the salon, while at the same time looking presentable for work. I did my first strip last night on my 3 month “covid grow out”. The only change I made was that I’m using semi-permanent dye so that it fades without having to grow all the way out once I stop dying. Fingers crossed!

I’m hoping the gray will look good on me and bring back my confidence. 😢

I really love my dark brown hair but that line of demarcation was driving me crazy every 10 days so I used a hair color remover and I'm just putting a light brown semi permanent color on it so I'm basically camouflaging the gray but not with permanent color

Did the color remover damage your hair? What's a good one to use? Mine is warm toned, won't I end up with brassy or red? Will a light ash brown cover the red? Will a grey dye eventually cover my brunette hair once it gets as light as it can while fading/ growing out,? ,( I'm switching back to Demi for this process. I switched to permanent color because it wasn't covering my WHITE hair. I'm guessing I can do root touch up with permanent? I'm in a pickle of a situation. My white hair shows through my hair topper, AND gives the optical illusion of thinning/balding since our the same color as my scalp! SMH! 😮

Is it important to only dye the roots of the strip and not the entire strip? Looking at the pics of this process, it looks like the dye is on the whole strip. Thanks for this idea!!
@dfmoffitt4 жыл бұрын
You have a very good eye. The photo that was used to intro the video was a month that I chose to dye the strip from roots to ends. The reason I did this, is because my dyed hair was fading so much that it was a reddish light color at the ends and looked very damaged. By dyeing the hair all the way to the ends it looked much healthier. I only did this once during the grow out process.

I have dark hair but have been blonde for the last 12 years and I was oh so very sick of going to the hairdresser because my hair grows so fast (every 4 weeks). I went back to close to my natural colour but now of course I have the opposite root problem - I'm an idiot lol So far this is the best technique I have seen - I really don't want to have to go to the hairdresser all the time I absolutely hate it and want to feel my natural hair texture again. Sooooo, vaseline is REALLY hard to wash out of hair. Needs a clarifying shampoo. Also, if you have curly hair finger twirl it whilst styling so the dark demarcation line is more hidden. You'll see what I mean! Update - 7 washes later, including the use of heavy duty dish soap and bicarb of soda, the grease is still there. Vaseline is not water soluble. And keep in mind by this stage your hair is brittle from extremely heavy cleansing and dye will be ruined. Make sure you deep condition twice if you need to wash with dish soap. Perhaps add a few drops of scalp oil and massage in once the vaseline eventually goes. If you are in the US try the blue Dawn soap, if UK try Fairy. However, before any of that, try the vaseline on a tiny bit of hair first and see how it washes out. I would strongly suggest finding something other than vaseline. I wish I had!

It’s almost impossible to dye dark hair silver - you’d have to use bleach first, which can be quite damaging. Plus, it’s very hard and costly to match the silver with your own natural color. So this is a good compromise ♥️

question: when first starting this method, do you take the strip of hair from the middle part/section, or do you automatically start with just strip-dying a bit off to the side? Because I heard that you have to be able to part your hair on the side of you want to do this but it's not apparent by this video if that's what she did.

I'm using Gray Away to help me during my grow out. I don't spray the product directly on my hair, though, I spray it on a cotton square & then rub that down my hair. When I do my bangs I hold a cotton square underneath my bangs & then then rub a sprayed on square down my bangs. To do the backs of them, I simply push my bangs back up against the top of my head & rub the square against the backs, going towards the back of my head (direction rubbing referance). Try that! :D

@jjbowman46532 жыл бұрын
Assume it will take a year to grow 6 inches of new hair growth. Depending on your hair length it can take a few years, I believe this is the reason many women cut it to a bob/lob/pixie
@KatieGoesPlatinum2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes - as JJ said, it depends on the length you're trying to achieve, If you were just going to grow your hair out to a bob, it would take much less time than if you were growing it out to shoulder-length. Shoulder length took me about 2- 2 1/2 years, and my hair grows faster than average. A chin-length bob would probably take a bit over a year?
@rooster14652 жыл бұрын
So dumb question. I have medium long brown hair with the skunk line. My hairdresser explained that in order to “stain” the hair gray that she has to essentially strip my hair of its color before she can add the gray because it won’t stick to my dark strand, have you heard of this? And are you dying your skunk line a dark color or the gray? Thank you!
@KatieGoesPlatinum2 жыл бұрын
Hi, not a dumb question! Your hairdresser is correct - dark hair has to be bleached a lot in order to get it light enough to try to color it gray. That's why a lot of us brunettes opt NOT to bleach because (unless your hair is very strong and healthy), that amount of bleaching can damage your hair and cause breakage, etc. If you're doing the dye strip method, you are dyeing that strip the same color that you're already dyeing your hair (so for example, dark brown) and letting the grays grow underneath the strip. Hope that helps!

Hi, Christine - what some people do is just use root sprays or powders around their face when pulling it back. Have you tried that?

It doesn't damage your hair when you do that one strip?
@KatieGoesPlatinum10 ай бұрын
Just as much damage as we usually get when we dye our hair. Personally, when I decided to go gray, I was done with chemicals because my hair was so damaged. But not everybody wants to go gray cold turkey, and they’re willing to risk a little damage to hide their skunk stripe.

I don't understand. You dye that entire section, or just the very outside area?
@KatieGoesPlatinum2 жыл бұрын
You only dye that section. See this tutorial for further instructions:kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHu1kop8rrmIiLc

Question? Why would it work for curly hair??
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
It works best with hair that you can part on it on one side and that is straight enough to hang down over the gray hair growing in. Of course, you could always try it for yourself, but I’ve been told it doesn’t work as well on curly hair. ❤️

What color are you dying the roots??
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
You’re dyeing the roots (only) of that strip of hair the same color you’ve been dyeing the whole time. So if you’ve been dyeing your hair dark brown, dye that strip dark brown too.

Is this your natural grey? Or you did any overtone?
@dfmoffitt4 жыл бұрын
This is my natural gray hair. I did not use any overtone during the process of my grow out or afterwards.

So dying the hair strip at root level means that has to grow out too 🙏
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 жыл бұрын
Michelle S yes, but some women don’t want to go gray cold turkey where the demarcation line shows, so this is a great option for them. When they’re ready to show their gray growth, they just flip their part to the gray side and let the dyed strip grow out undetected (beneath the gray).
@rattylol4 жыл бұрын
This wouldn't work for all women, mine is really long and wavy and this would show, I was only doing roots of the top section for years but got sick of it now my hair is 3 inch grey strip at roots, mid to light faded brown and then very dark brown mixed with grey underneath, I love the grey stripe and the grey mix but I hate the faded brown dye that I can't work out how to get rid of.

I would suggest talking to a hairstylist about dying the ends of your hair a color that makes you happy. They should be able to dye it without touching your roots. Just be sure to be very clear about your wishes because I have heard horror stories about women who have asked for this to be done and the hairstylist ends up covering up their hard earned gray growth.

It seems this technique is only good for side parts. Is that correct?
@KatieGoesPlatinum3 жыл бұрын
It definitely works best with a side part as you have to flip the dyed hair strip over the gray to cover it.

What color dye am I colouring my strip tho ?
@thecatatemyhomework2 жыл бұрын
The same color as your dyed hair.

Yes, just use the same dye color that you always do. ❤️

My only problem is my hair grows so fast that it is white shining through in a week. I considered this technique and then decided to go white with toppers and wigs
@KatieGoesPlatinum2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great alternative!

I don't think this will work in my hair- it's white underneath! It even shows through my hair topper!

I used Wella’s permanent dye from Sally’s Beauty Supply.

Loooove this technique. Genius! However, I’m one of those who can’t part their hair any other way. Boo

Darn it! Well, make sure to watch my new video that's going to go up today or tomorrow! It's all about a different method of going gray in secret - using wigs!
@elainepeterson12692 жыл бұрын
I actually bought a one ponytail online. My hair color is dark brown and gray. The ponytail is a great way to hide your line of demarcation, if you turn it into a messy bun or a nicer looking bun on top of your head. I believe there are hair toppers you can use, also.

In the video you mentioned temporary/washout spray on hair color. Why can’t you just use that and wash it out every so often?
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't last more than 1 shampoo, so you'd literally have to do that every time you shampooed. you could do it, but it would be costly.

How does this work when you have short layered hair?
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 жыл бұрын
Beverly Thompson i don’t think it would work with shorter hair - you would need some length to hang down over the gray.
@melissalarson86504 жыл бұрын
Deb Arndt from Going Gray Gracefully did this technique. At some point she cut it short. Look her up, she rocked it.

This method would not be easy with bangs, unfortunately (except maybe long bangs?)

I’m seriously clueless as to what she explains here. What color are you dying the roots? Is there a video where someone is showing the actual process?
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
Hi - you can check out my blog post for detailed instructions: katiegoesplatinum.com/dye-strip-technique-going-gray-in-secret/ also my video How To Go Gray which shows updated process photos that should help you: 8 Best Ways To Go Gray from Dyed Hair - KZbin www.youtube.com › watch But to answer your question - you are dyeing the roots ONLY of that strip of hair the same color you've been dyeing your hair the whole time. So if you've been dyeing it dark brown, you'll continue to dye the ROOTS of that strip (ONLY) the same dark brown, while all the rest of your hair will remain undyed. It sounds crazy but it works!

What I don't understand is you're trying to get away from dying your hair so I don't get how you're doing this I have dark hair I have gray just in the front of my face n color the rest but i m getting tired of coloring my hair so I just don't get what you say about dying the hair because if you're going to let your hair grow out Gray you want to get away from dying your hair
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 жыл бұрын
Everyone is different - you and I are willing to go gray cold turkey, but a number of women do NOT want to do it that way. This method gives them the option to grow out their gray in secret by just dyeing one little strip of hair for a bit longer. We all have to choose the method that works best for our temperament.

Not really DYE strip it's covering hair w temp spray did I miss you dying it?
@KatieGoesPlatinum2 жыл бұрын
She didn’t dye it during the video shoot - you must have missed Diana describing how she used semi permanent dye (NOT temporary root spray) to dye the strip. Check out the video again, or click the link to the blog post for full instructions. Thanks!

I still don't get it..... maybe I need it explained by a hairstylist cause I watched over 3 time and can't under stand...
@KatieGoesPlatinum Жыл бұрын
Believe me, I get it! I had a really hard time understanding it at first. Basically, you're only dyeing that one strip of hair (it has to be on your side part for this to work), and that dyed strip hangs down over your graying hair and hides it. It creates the illusion of still having dark hair. Once your gray roots grow out long enough that you feel comfortable showing them to the world, you flip your part to the gray side and it looks like you're fully transitioned! In the meantime, you just let that dyed strip grow out underneath your gray hair and nobody can even see it. It's like magic!
