How to apply Wing Chun trapping into boxing?
There are a lot of ways to make Wing Chun trapping work in different settings. Although most of the traditional Wing Chun practitioners do not practice boxing, I found trapping quite usefully in boxing if you understand the concept and practice a lot with it.
In this video, we will be going over a few of my favorite ways to implement Wing Chun trapping into my sparring game and how to practice with a partner!
We are also rolling out affiliate training program to everyone now! If you are looking to add in new programs into your school or becoming a certified instructor under Sifu Francis Fong, please visit our website at www.fonginstructor.com!

Finally a guy who can throw a jab and retracts. In stead of all these video's where the attacker jabs and keeps his arm hanging giving the "teacher" the opportunity to do all kinds of fancy things. Great content and well explained.

Never studied wing chun but I use a lot of wing chun tips in my sparring and this is one of them, it's very effective. I've found out that a lot of wing chun punches and systems work well when in motion and you spot a quick opening and want to place a sneaky punch. So if you are getting pressed, if you are slipping or dodging.

Your right bro! I learned from a english fella that mixed wing Chun whith boxing and it was quite effective in sparring! And yes you are dead right that wing chun technical and dynamics work well! You just have to sift through and analise then work it practically and when u do u can definitely catch people off guard 🤟

Wing Chun elements and some techniques ,most definitely work but you have to do them in a practical way . Also doesn't hurt to like you see in this clip , adapt and slightly tweak them to have a even better result. In general most of the techniques lack power or proper foot work .But with some slight changes you can correct that (One could say WC strongest point is also its weak point) And that's their straight line theory, and and economical movement . Yes straight center line forward is the fastest and shorter way ,but against someone stronger bigger that's not always the best thing to do . Also the classical wing chun stance is just to one dimensional and stiff wood like

People need to break the tradition. Nobody questions karate because it's had 40 years in the zeitgeist to mature and we know what we know, but until youtube era wingchun was niche. Now it's starting to be applied and adapted into modern striking methods... I think people fear 2 things. That it loses its identity through filtering out tradition, and that if it's actually practical the naysayers over the last 12 or so years of KZbin will have to recognize that validity.

This instructor has been well trained and is showing some great techniques. I will give a caveat as a JKD instructor who was trained under Two Bruce Lee students and a well known Back yard student for 16 years; I did fight Muy Thai and was a boxing Gym rat up until I was 50 years old. I sparred with national level fighters quite often. Yes, JKD saved me in many gyms, BUT, a lot of stuff just doesn't work on good fighters. The reason, is that you can train those cool intercepting or following moves and even make them work with your training partners. However Good fighters will not be there when you go to counter and will be angling and hitting you before you can get off. Or they will use counter time, (feinting to draw your interception, then countering you,) etc... Not that JKD doesn't work, It just doesn't work as well when your opponents are good. My advice if you want your JKD to be the best it can be is to spar HARD after training techniques, and,(this is very important,) Find other GOOD fighters to spar against. Find a Muy Thai, mma and Boxing gym with fighters who have lots of fights. Now try your stuff. This will make you much better and will show you what really works.

There is a reason why all the Grandmaster frauds in China keep getting knocked out by that 20 year old UFC fighter that has been challenging them. The fights are then subsequently censored by the Chinese government b/c they hurt the national pride. Try grabbing the wrist or arm of a ufc fighter or boxer. It won't happen period. Doing this stupidity will get you knocked out in seconds. Wing Chun is woo and is as real as traditional Chinese medicine. Great way to get yourself a big hospital bill or killed.

To paraphrase, "If you want to be able to fight against good fighters, you must train and spar with good fighters." True in every form of martial art (including boxing) not just Wing Chun or JKD. :)

Wing Chun and JKD are based on adapting and flowing like water and defense is offense. So if you master it you don't have to spar good fighters. Just master the art

Great comment. However the chances of you getting into a fight with a trained fighter are slim. I understand you're training for gym or competition type of thing but a street fight is a TOTALLY different situation.

So trapping in boxing is called holding and definitely illegal, if you're doing the first 2 tips you're going to need to keep the arm on the outside of your glove to avoid that. The 3rd tip is literally a jab parry, it's a perfectly good technique also taught in boxing so that works pretty well. That one is great advice.

Thank you for this video. My specialty for the past 16 years has been in boxing and I can see so many similarities to what my late trainer taught me. I saw some techniques that he did in this video that mirrored what my trainer taught me in the boxing gym. I was blown away because it was like my trainer unknowingly was teaching me Wing Chun techniques.

Cool stuff. Slip and counter is a basic boxing move, but I really like how parrying is taught here, I will try that little finger flick next time I’m sparring (boxing that is). I’ve made some other stuff of Kevin’s work before. Problem is that often people parry with these huge movements slamming the hand down, which is way too slow and leaves you open especially if they feint. That finger flick keeps the hand still in guard, so even if they fool you with a feint you’re safe. It’s really hard to get rid off this mental image that you need this massive movement (I’ve seen JKD people do those as well, so I don’t think it’s always taught like this there either). In terms of Wing Chun working in boxing.. I never trained any Chinese arts and I can watch a video and make that stuff work based on what I know from boxing. It’s just Chinese boxing and not too different from the old style of English Pugilism. Boxing works in boxing, who would have guessed? But it gets shitty rep bc of all the movies, mysticism and sometimes blatantly racist orientalism. It’s not flying dragon fighting monkey magic woo woo, it’s just a way to parry, slip and counter.
