My cat was either a stray or feral last spring when I'd see her on the property, always keeping her distance. She looked a bit thin, so I started putting out some dry food for her and water around March. At first it was at a distance as she would only hiss at me and didn't want me near, so that's how it was. After some patience, she's now part of the unit and she keeps the outside of the house free of all critters, she likes to be inside, but she still needs to be a "wild" cat too. It's balanced out beautifully, and we get along great now!

Ferals are ferals especially if they are already old. You can let them roam outside because leaving some ferals outside helps to control vermins and pests

@@kg-Whatthehelliseventhat Well, it took me a while of putting out food and sitting nearby and watching, then I gradually put the food closer to me so the cat wouldn't feel threatened. It took some time to even get her to let me touch her, but with patience you can win them over. Remember to give them slow blinks, it helps!!

@questfortruth665 thank you for the fast reply. We have been feeding the stray daddy cat for years and now his 1 year old Stray kitten has become my 17 month old Ragamuffin's girlfriend. The play on each side of the screen door. We feed who we now call Junior. I hope we can home her after we take her to the vet... if it gets to that point. I do get blinky eyes back from her but have yet to touch her. It just hurts my heart because it is raining outside tonight and I don't want her outside. I guess I am doing everything right abd your reassurance has eased some concern. Thank you. 🤝 I'll binge watch videos on the subject for more information. Thank you so much. Please feel free to suggest anything. I have become a great first-time cat dad but could always learn something new.

@@kg-Whatthehelliseventhat Yeah, same here! I've just played it by ear mostly. Patience is the main thing I learned. Get some treats and some canned food too, that'll help keep her/him occupied and content. Once they get used to you and figure out you're not going to eat them, it gets better!

We fed this old, grey grandma cat for 5 years. She was always very unfriendly. Fall of 2022 she was looking pretty bad, and one day she walked in the house and never left. She hid out for a few weeks and then started spending time with my brother at his computer. He now wakes up to her sleeping with her cheek against his. She occasionally goes out, but mostly she likes her pillow by the fire and the dependable food she gets every day. I guess she just got sick the hard life.

I did just as you instructed in your video before I had seen it about 15 years ago. After about three months he finally walked up to me and let me touch him. After about six months when it was cold and raining he started sleeping on the back porch. Then one night he started crying and I opened the door and he came in. I moved his food and water to inside the door and let him come and go as he wanted. He’s passed away now but over the years we became best friends. His name was Lewis and is now buried under the tree where I first saw him. According to the vet he was 2 when he first came and lived until he was 14. I miss him very much but was happy I was able to help him and we were able to become best friends.

About thirty years ago we began to talk about adopting a cat to live with us. Before too long a calico female came visiting stayed around for about a half hour and then left. She looked healthy and cared for and so we figured that she had a family she lived with. She wandered off, but returned a day or two latter. A neighbour noted that she had been observed on the loose by other neighbours and seemed lost or without a family to live with. Events seemed to indicate that she was about to put that right and she adopted us, spending the next 15 years as a part of our family. We named her, Tigger. She was fairly aggressive and Tigger attempted to be Top cat over her four human family members. She once at a tussle with me trying to shift me off a large cushion I used to lay down on the floor to watch TV. Tigger had never shown a preference for this cushion only when she wanted me off it.Tiggers life was ended after we noticed her bleeding beneath her tail. We took her to the vet who gave Tigger a life ending injection because the vet believed the bleeding to be untreatable by surgery because of her age. Tigger was estimated to be around fifteen (human) years of age when she died. Then there came, Marie, a friends cat who out lived him so came to live with us when he died. Marie herself died from old age. We then bought a black and grey Maine Coon tabby who after 10 years developed skin cancer on that baldish area just ahead of his right ear. I have Cairos ashes in a small box atop my tallboy. We now have Lenny a British Short Hair grey and black tabby. Lenny is actually our daughters cat but because she is a nurse, working shifts at a local government hospital and thought it best that Lenny not be left on his own with her not being home that Lenny would prefer to live with us. Lenny enjoys and inside/outside life but never far away from the house, his and our home. Lenny will probably outlive me, but not the rest of his humans because in our country, way down here in the Southern Pacific the only threat he faces is from automobiles, there are no deadly animals or insects, but he seems never to go out past the front gate so Lenny should be safe enough.

Years ago, there was a black stray cat that warmed up to me very quickly. I used to feed his fearful mother and siblings often. While his siblings ran when I put food on the porch for them, he just stayed. He (a small kitten originally) even cuddled up next to me. I trained him to come inside with little effort until the point he came inside when he wants to and when he wanted to leave, he meows at the front or back door. When he wants to come in, he meows and claws at the front door. I still remember the time my dad and Grandma came in with groceries from the back door and he simply let himself in and watched us put the food up. Very affectionate towards my grandma and dad but playful towards me. Eventually we moved out of the house and surprisingly I saw him again (fixed and w/ Collar) at a house blocks away from my old home two years later. He still remembered me and walked me to his new home, but I still sadly had to leave him behind. I was going through a tough time and was happy to see him again. The only thing odd about him was when I took care of him, he was very territorial when it came to the house. When one of his siblings tried to come inside, he hissed and tried to fight them. He also stayed away from the other cats as they tend to have fleas. When his mom brough another cat with her, he hissed at him too. He claimed me and the house.

We often have stray cats around our home. When one shows up, especially when the weather turns cold, we start setting out food and water for them. This at least gives them a place where they can go for food and water. Eventually my wife starts gaining their confidence and little by little as start to trust her and eventually me and my daughter. We hope to capture them, currently we have four, and turn them over to a non kill shelter. So they will at least be warm and fed. We were never cat people, we always had dogs but at one point a fluffy black cat got into our house. We took her to a vet to get checked out and found out that she was pregnant, we originally took her there to be spayed but when the doctor said that she was pregnant my wife wanted to keep her as she had never seen or had baby kittens or puppies. We didn’t know about shelters and Halloween was coming up and I sure as hell was not going to adopt them out to be used for a sacrifice. In the end we wound up keeping all of the cats. Then we started capturing cats and found out that there are shelters that would take them, especially if they were kittens. Older cats are not generally as welcome as younger ones. So over the years we have (I’m not bragging or complaining) we have possibly rescued well over 2 dozen cats, give or take . Like I said, as of this writing, there are 4 more looking for shelter and love. Wish me luck.

I have been feeding two stray, probably feral cats for more than six years, one dry meal and water, in the balcony under my first floor balcony. They welcome me, come to me meowing sweetly, start eating while I am still arranging the food and water, but never let me more than touch their nose with my curved finger... after six years... They know me visually, sometimes they look up at my window or balcony and meow, but I am a vegetarian and cannot throw them anything... other neighbours do and they sometimes eat...

My cat came from my friends' back yard where they took care of the strays and ferals in the neighborhood. I brought her home when she was about 3 mos. old but she still has some feral behaviors mostly related to hiding when the doorbell rings and not wanting to get in her carry box to go to the vet. She'd never allow me to put on a collar or harness and leash. It's fine, though. We get along just fine until it's vet time.

Welp, I really wish I knew what I was getting into when I befriended 3 of our neighborhood ferals! My intention in the beginning was to get them comfortable enough to take advantage of the TNR program we have in our county. However, I wasn't quite fast enough and one of the females ended up pregnant. During her pregnancy, she started warming up to me very quickly- to the point that she would come around just for pets! So when she went into labor, she came to ME for comfort and security!🥰 I set up a makeshift shelter on my patio and hoped she would take advantage of it and have her kittens there, but that night there was a huge wind storm and my shelter was destroyed. I didn't see her for a few days afterward until I was taking out the trash one night and she came bounding up to me meowing and basically tossed one of her babies to me! I picked the tiny kitten up and noticed momma had disappeared... she was bringing me her other 3 kittens as well! I can't tell you how absolutely HONORED I felt! So, we ended up with a feral cat and 4 kittens in our basement 😄 At 12 weeks, we were able to place the 3 males of the litter who were all black and tan tabbies, but we couldn't seem to find a good placement for the pure black female runt of the litter (who had quite a Napoleon complex!) So, I have a kitty now who is my actual sidekick that I never knew I needed😍🤗💜 Her mom still lives on my patio with her 2 friends and I was able to get all 3 of the ferals fixed eventually... so, goal accomplished and well rewarded! Just wish cat food was a little less expensive 😬 (these cats are very demanding and quite picky for being ferals) & I've learned to watch where I step when going out back- they like to leave me gifts of mice and small bunnies on my steps😖😆

So there’s this beautiful blonde cross eyed cat that lives in my neighborhood, i call him “blondie” I absolutely fell in love with him. I’m not even a cat person. But I was raised having a lot of dogs so I figured it was kind of the same thing 😂 (to gain loyalty) Blondie wouldn’t let me get near him at first- so I started by throwing some ham in front of him everyday when I came come from work. I did it for two days until one day there was another (bigger) cat out there, trying to intimidate my boy into giving him the food I supplied. When “blondie” noticed the bigger car was staring him down; I got up and stood in-between them. Staring the bigger cat down for a minute, then I started walking twards it to scare them off. The next day blondie let me pet him when I showed up with food. Since then I’ve been slowly gaining his trust and I’m now trying to work on him letting me pick him up.

I adopted a kitten who was part of a litter that was abandoned in a alley, she is now almost 16 years old, extremely beautiful calico with half her face orange tabby striped and the other solid black..she had adult cat sized ears when she was only 8 weeks which gave her a rabbit look...some at shelter literally made fun of her when I ask to see her, as she was the only kitten who wasn't trying to get attention and hiding aloan in the back...I thought her oversized ears were cute, and her body grew into her ears and she's always getting compliments now! 😻😻

A few weeks ago, I moved into a house I bought in a small town of 500ppl located in a rural area. Next door, I noticed the gentleman has 15 or 17 cats. When I spoke to my new neighbor, he said he didn't own the cats and that they were always just around. He feeds them hard food and has supplied some shelter. Four of them have made moves to befriend me and have become semi permanent fixtures on my back step. I have been working for about a week and a half to gain their trust and the closest I got to them was handing one some food out of my own hand right to mouth, if one gets brave enough to eat from my hand it's like the others instinctually get jealous and try to outdo the other cat by also approaching. I have made sure to move slowly, I slow blink at them and also coo and meow a bit to show I'm submissive and pose no threat. KZbin is helpful as I play sounds of cats cooing (like a purr and a meow mixed together that is cute) they really show interest when I play that. So I'm interested to see how much longer it's going to take for me to be able to pet the cats. I give it less than 10 days.

Thank you! It is my intention when I see a stray cat (or dog) to provide for them, and then hopefully get them to trust me enough that I can at least see what physical condition they are really in. I successfully wooed a 6- 8 month old semi feral male ginger cat about 15 years ago. Turned out he like being a house kitty after awhile (and a desperately needed flea bath!) and was surprisingly gentle when I was getting the fleas out of his hair. We named him Bart - because we had been watching Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles when I dogs started barking. He lived with us for the rest of his life! About 20 years ago, I tried saving a starving black cat during one of the coldest winters in western NY. I tried so hard, I made sure to put food on my back patio every day. I found out one of the maintenance men who worked at my apartment complex was trying to help this same kitty. He would not allow either of us within 6 ft of him. Sadly, the maintenance man found him curled, frozen to death inside a boat one of the residents owned and had covered for the winter. This failure to save him still haunts me. The maintenance man, it turns out, was fostering about 10 cats that people had just left and abandoned when they moved. He and his wife were good people.

My younger cat never lived in the street, but I started out as an occasional babysitter. I couldn’t get too close other than maybe a quick pat on the head without him trying to scratch or bite. Maybe the third time I babysat him, he jumped on the bed and curled up next to me. Apparently he realized he liked me better than his owner, who called one day and said I needed to take him or he’d go to the shelter. He’ll give a playful swat every now and then, but he saves his hostility for his fights with the other cat. They’re frenemies.

We have several shelters outside on our porches that they use. We've named them Peaches, Marbles, Kit Kat and Hoot Hoot. There are 3 others that come along with them about 1/2 the time that still shy away from us but will eat. One is a Tuxedo and I think one is a Maine Coon! A few have been Spayed or Neutered as you can see their Ears are clipped.

Found a propper spicy feral thing In the garden last year, plus a kitten. The kitten ninja'd himself right in at home, belending in with our own. (looks and behaviour). Worked hard with the feral over winter, as I didn't see him surviving another alone. He's had many challenges , mostly fear of enclosed spaces and terroitorial issues. With supervision, encouragement, praise, play and a full belly, he has the confidence to return to A welcoming home, daily and sleep at my feet. So I'm gonna have to officailly claim him, chipped n neuter like the rest.

Just be slow and give it time. Get down at the cats level the closest it will let you get and start tossing it some food. Show the cat your not a threat. It might take the food and run with it the first time but eventually it will eat the food right infront of you and want to walk up to you for the next piece. If the cat rubs against you your good! Reach out slowly and pet it:)

There's about 15 to 25 strays in an empty hospital block away. A female started staying under our shed last summer then had 3 kittens. Now they all come on porch each day. Sleep on it sometimes. Surprised not every day nite as it's Wisconsin and quite cold ATM. Lots snow! But now like 4 other strays show up and trying to eat. Which scares the originals to come. Idk if it's best to stop leaving food or not. Tho the runt of the litter comes to me closer and closer. Peeks inside house ALOT. Don't let me pet her but seems to want to be and be inside with us. Tho idk as I'm not a cat expert nor really had 1 so don't know much about em

When my 2nd cat was a stray in late September 1981. He was afraid of me and hid under the deck. He was meowing for a few minutes as I was talking him. He came out of hiding and started to cuddled with me. He instantly bonded with me. He also met my sister and even my parents. He was very sweet and friendly red tabby cat. His head was big for his body. We adopted him in mid November 1981. He even got along with our 1st cat, too. He was mostly my cat for the cuddles and even belly rubs. He was the sweetest cat that I ever had. I was 11 years old when I first met him. He was put down in March 1994. I named him Roughneck when he was a stray. It was shortened towards Ruffy by my mother. My 6th grade teacher told me to be very careful around a stray cat. I never thought of Ruffy hurting me at all. He was a very gentle cat. He even did cuddled with a 2 year old girl. He was a big cat that did weigh at 20 pounds for the longest time. The doctor kept saying that he needed to lose the weight. He did lost the weight near the end of his life. His weight was 13 pounds. I do missed his beautiful green eyes looking up at me. Even sitting next to me while I was eating my dinner. Even sitting next to me enjoying the nice warm weather outside. He was an indoor and outdoor cat. He just stayed in the yard to be close to his home. He was my special friend. He did cuddled with my sister and my parents. He did touch hearts with my mother’s mother. She hated cats but, she did fell in loved with Ruffy. He climbed on her lap to flossed his gums on a magazine. That was one thing he did that was odd for a cat.

I fed and eventually got to a petting relationship with a feral kitten. But he always stayed skittish until one day. I heard cats fighting out in my yard and saw a large adult cat was attacking the now adolescent cat I had been feeding and petting. I made a lot of noise and chased the adult cat away. I then walked over to my cat and scooped him up. He was bleeding. I nursed him back to health inside of my house, and after that, he always trusted me to do ANYTHING from that day forward, even lifting him. That was the day he became “my cat.” He lived a long and happy life with me and died when he was about 17 to 18 years old, I’m guessing, based on what I think his age was when we first met.

I have 3 stray kittys that a neighbor who has a farm took because they had no where else to go. They quickly moved from her property to mine and 2 of them worked their way into my garage. I don’t know if they don’t get along or what but the 3rd little kitty I do t believe sleeps in there with them. We have multiple cat houses outside for them, fully insulated of course so I have seen her in different boxes. I also have a heated box for her outside that I haven’t got her to use just yet. I have been feeding them for about a year but they seem feral. They come a lot closer now and don’t run out of the garage when I go in for something but they won’t let me get too close either they are always watching me. I don’t have a cat door in my garage so I made a big strip that covers the bottom of the garage door opening out of thick foam house installation all but a little square for them to come and go as they please. I have a table inside with cat boxes we made and straw inside. Just tonight ordered 2 more of the heated cat houses for the ones that sleep in the garage. Hopefully they can figure it out and go in. I really want to help them. I have 5 inside cats of my own. They don’t go outside. The one stray comes to my sliding glass door at night and rubs on door when my cats come to it. We have been working with her and now she will rub on my hand but only through the glass door when I tried opening the door a little and putting my hand out she wouldn’t come over to me. It’s like she wants so badly to be loved and have the attention but she is so afraid. Not sure what to do at this point but to keep trying. If anyone has advice I’d love to hear it. If you got to this point, thanks for taking the time to read this. ❤

When I was young I spent time on my Grandfather's farm. There was a stray/feral kitten living underneath their front porch. They were leaving little dishes of milk and some table scraps for it, but it would never show itself when they were out. I found by sitting on the front porch the kitten would eventually come out and approach me. By sitting still long enough it eventually started climbing on me. I was quite fond of it and it was something of a disappointment that my Grandparents wanted me to capture it. I did as they asked and the last I saw of it it was in a box heading to a farm down the road where they wanted to make it a part of their family. I still feel guilty that I betrayed its trust and I hope it learned to trust the new family, I never knew.

I’m currently feeding a stray out on my front porch. It honestly looks fairly healthy, but none of my neighbors have claimed him/her, and it always stays in this general area. Don’t know that I’ll ever let it inside since it’s been a stray since I moved in a couple months ago and because I’m only renting our current spot. Hope to create a friendship before my lease is up though :)

My family found a adorable cat, Today, June 17th 2024 we find 4 KITTENS with her now we did see nipples on her stomach and they were pretty big so, we suspected she was going to have kittens or she already did and our suspicions were true. from my research I think that they're 9 or 8 weeks we are going to keep one and find the rest and the mama homes and we are trying to get them to come to us they are hiding under something and it's really dark so we can't see them. Very sweet and adorable kittens they're so helpless if they were without a mom they would probably be dead by now.

4 months ago, 3 kittens came in our house. My mom threw the 2 aways, but the last one ran away. I thought to adopt it because it was gonna have a tough life without her siblings near, At first I was scared of cats so I had my sister give her food. Soon after I stopped getting scared. My mom tried to threw it many times..but it came back until..one day it never returned. She was my heart..Iam still waiting for her❤😢

So ive been feeding a stray for about 4-5 months now. The cat does approach me when i feed her. I tried taking her home but i also have 2 other cats that may fight. Im nervous about introducing them. She ended up jumping outta the car anyways. But now shes back in the area she's lived in. She seems happy and has places to go. Id love to make her a winterized shelter. Winters is coming and its already in the 40's at night. Im hoping to get this done by tomorrow. I wish I had money to just buy the one i want. I also bought her tick medicine, she had a couple on her. I took one off hopefully the right way. I just hate to see her cold 😢

I have the same situation. I bought a cheap, insulated, cat house from Walmart and also added a heated pad (which is very low cost on energy). I covered it with a tarp and put her food and water bowl under the make-shift awning. Best to you. =)

Hello Cat Lovers, I have some good news, and I still need some more help. OK, quickly I saw this cat in the back yard a few days before we were supposed to get an ice cold storm. She was pregnant oh she was! So I took pity on her knowing that I a few days she is going to be cold. I went to the store, and I bought her the cheapest dry cat food I could find, at the time I was not going to invest a lot of resources towards her. And as the video stated, just a helping hand to make sure she is warm and her pregnancy is not compromised. That was in January of 2024. Now, she has seen me multiple times placing the food near her shelter that I made for her to get out of the cold and wind and rain. Now that became “The Spot” I would place the food near the shelter and she would be happy. As the weather got better, I now see her waiting under a glass table in the back yard waiting for me to wake up and bring the food out to her. A couple of days ago, I had one slice of ham left and I cut it into small pieces and I was able to hand feed her! That was AFTER she had her wet food, and some of the dry food. I started hand feeding her every so often so that she knows all about me. Today after hand feeding her, and I’m being very careful not to be accidentally bitten by her, I am not sure what diseases or parasites she may have. I am planning a visit to the vet once she will allow me. And she seems to also be very gentle with me, her teeth are so sharp… so, today in the evening she was resting underneath the table in the back yard and I went outside to be with her, and she at first wanted to run away, but then she saw that I was going to sit at the table, she moved about 10 feet away. My question is how do I play with her? I have some feathery toys, it’s a colorful bunch if feathers on a string attached to kinda a small fishing rod. And I also have a laser pointer with different shapes. I want to be able to have her jump around a bit trying to catch this colorful feathers where I would have placed a treat for her to eat and enjoy kinda I got you sucker… I need some help in having her find that feathery thing and run after it, and then I’ll land next to the treats and that should be a good thing. Oh I forgot to say that today when she moved about 10 feet away from, me, she went back to sleep too! So that is a sign of more trust. I have not seen her hunt. I am thinking maybe she does not know how??? So, any ideas please… I need help BIG TIME with her… thanks in advance!

I'm trying to befriend a neighborhood stray. I first saw her a year and a half ago maybe when she and i assume a sibling were hiding under the hood of my car and made me late to work lol. Didn't know they were stray, figured they were someone's cats cause people are foolish and let their pets out a lot here. Found out recently that she's had two litters of kittens and my neighbor stole her most recent kittens from her without catching momma :/ Hoping I can befriend her, she's shy but seems like she wants to be friendly.

I have been feeding a stray cat about 8 months now. She walks laps of my yard with my Husky (makes no sense as my Husky wants to eat our indoor cats) and sleeps near by her. Each night I feed this stray (more feral) cat around 5:00pm and with out fail she is waiting for her food. She gets soft and dry food each night and sees me provide it for her. However she will not come anywhere close to me. I want pressure her and will stand my distance but she just stays back. If only she knew that I would take her in with my other 2 cats to get warm. Currently she fits the description of a ‘Freeloader’ perfectly 😂

I joke about it often enough, but there is a serious point in my joke: One has to do things with the cat on the cat’s schedule, not that of the person. That will build trustworthiness in the person, in the cat’s eyes. I do have a question: How do abandoned house cats survive in harsh weather? Do they hunker down, so to speak, and tough it out, letting their natural instincts take over?
@josie4peace
@josie4peace 6 ай бұрын
Winter is hard on them. They'll try to find a safe, dry spot to nestle down, but without warmth and bedding it's hard to survive. I have insulated cat houses for the strays (w/heated mats, food, and water).

This is a story about one day when I was a really bratty kid I was homeschooled my entire childhood, never stepped foot into a public school I was doing "homework" in our living room, and a cat came walking up to the sliding glass door to the porch The cat kept meowing to me and tapping on the glass I was sitting on the floor next to the glass, this cat kept meowing for over 2 hours, I was pissed (again, I was a bratty child) and kept pounding the window back and yelling to go away It wouldn't go away So, after a bit of arguing with this cat through the glass, I went out the back door, stood some distance away from it and asked "what the **** do you want?" (I was very unhappy with the homework, idek what the homework was anymore) The cat immediately meowed, walked up to me, and started rubbing up against my leg She was a short hair breed, looked about 4-5 years old, tabby So I ended up petting her, forgot all about my homework, and just chilled with the cat I ended up feeding her a can of refried beans, she loved that Spent weeks hanging out with her every night, never named her, and then one day, she disappeared Months later, my grandparents were moving in and we unloaded everything into the garage Some time later before unpacked all of the stuff, one of my sisters found her feeding an entire litter of 6 kittens that she moved into the boxes She was such a great cat, we ended up finally naming her mama bear Although she ended up disappearing to never be found again, she still gave us 6 great cats Everyone got a cat, I named mine Chloe and she was the runt Chloe lived the longest, and is still alive to this day Chloe disappears for weeks, months, and she would always come back when I was driving home from work She would come running towards me from about 200-250 yards out, meowing the entire way because she recognized the sound of my engine She wouldn't listen to anyone in the house but me, and I could tell her to follow me and she has up to about 8 miles away from the house I ended up moving out, couldn't take her with me to a different state I miss her so much, she meant so much to me

Its better to try to be friendly with them with some food and water, instead of the feral and stray cats becoming victims of the cat meat trade for their flesh/meat or fur. It's also becoming a very lucrative trade as well.
