For me, Simon is a CONSTANT, he was there in all decades, in all periods, in all times, like the big brother in music I never had, but still there! I saw him in TV, on videos, in workshops, had LP's, CD's, DVD's, now downloads. His soft warm voice, his cordial ironical and winkingly commentaries and the always great sounding BIG drum set is something familiar, just belongs to my live! Thank you Simon, thank you Mr. Phillips, God bless you!

Simon is the drummer reference and icon of other drummers that have been icons and have been extremely important in drumming history. But all of them have one thing in common: Their respect and admiration about Simon Phillips. The king of polirhythm, stick control and perfect (=equal) dynamic on every hand...🙌 a monster. An immense human and very humble artist and person. Simply marvellous.

Simon is awesome, I got to chat with him briefly at a clinic he did some time back in 2015/2016. Besides sharing some incredible playing, ideas and exercises he was just the most chill and down to earth guy to talk to afterwards; really took a moment to listen to people and connect with them. I think that really comes through in his playing and his general energy. What a great guy!

Simon Phillips open handed drumming is so cool. I’ve been building up my left hand/foot so I can play this same style. Ive also added 2nd hihat to my setup so can play open handed with my hihat on left or right side. I really like playing open handed especially when playing dance music. It also forces me to play different drum fills. It help keeps things fresh.
@MawcDrums2 жыл бұрын
Open handed player here from the start. It always felt super weird playing snare backbeat grooves with my left hand so playing the ride on the right was a challenge for me for anything involving lots of ghost notes on the left. The moment I found out I was allowed to have my ride on the left side of my kit my world completely changed lol. Now I've got more of an ambidextrous setup, two snares, two highhats, two rides, floor toms on both sides, and I've developed that left hand more to overcome that initial handicap.

Toto was and is my parents favorite band. Growing up aspiring to play like Simon was a great pleasure (and porcaro) - my dad is also a drummer so protocol was a big inspiration for me as well. And there was a couple drum nation album volumes that featured Simon, namely manganese and the barbarian were killer tracks! Simon has been my favorite drummer for my entire life. I’ll never forget the fill off totos falling in between album in “bottom of your soul” or the groove of “slipped away” from tambu. Simons playing are what make those songs so great imo - thank you Simon for all the amazing music in my life!

In the 70's I was studying tabla from a true master from India. I learned this trick I've tried to pass on... learn to count a half-beat. 5 becomes 2+1/2.. 7 becomes 3+1/2... 19 becomes 9+1/2. Once I caught that, improvising in 5, 7, 11, becomes really easy to "feel" and you no longer are "counting"

Probably 10-11 years ago bought a loop pack from Simon Phillips. He essentially played drums on my first solo effort/EP. Was certainly very basic time signatures, and I have so much more respect for him watching this. So zen, so in the zone. And I love that he doesn’t try to mystify it, and just says let’s break it down as if it’s 4/4 with cutoffs. Still don’t know a ton about who he is, or what he’s worked on… but I do know I thoroughly enjoyed writing several songs with his drums as my backing rhythm. Drumeo is such a great channel/idea and I’m primarily a guitar player, but I could watch drumeo all day.

I love playing in odd times but Simon's open-handed approach (part of his "secret sauce") is a bit challenging to adapt to after decades of the "conventional/classic" stick technique. I'd highly recommend trying to learn that as it offers many advantages (of course, you can often move the HH--Bruford's central placement obviously works).

I've been a fan of Simon's work for years now and always enjoy his precision, speed and smoothness in playing. I like the rock fusion music but am a much bigger fan of prog rock. My dream band would be one with Rick Wakeman on anything with keys, Steve Hackett on anything with strings, Alex. Lifeson on anything with strings that requires electricity, Geddy Lee on anything with thick strings and beefy pickups, Ray Cooper on anything...percussion, I haven't figured out who would be a suitable vocalist for such a band (Peter Gabriel?) and would like to hear suggestions (but they better be good!), and of course, Simon on anything that's cylindrical, hollow and has at least one head (even though he typically plays on one-head drums) and needs sticks. Bill Bruford can join in with the fancy electronic stuff.
