Hi Emma I would like to ask a basic grammar question. It is sometimes difficult for me to choose the right auxiliary verb. For example: Did you clean your car? or Have you cleaned your car? or Did you eat the pizza that I cooked? or Have you eaten the pizza that I cooked? Sometimes I can’t understand what is right and what is wrong or what is the difference. I would be really grateful if you could me give an explanation :-) Thank you very much, you are great!

Additions and clarifications: Where are they going football with? (Delete "with") Questions are not always inverted. (a) when the answer is obvious or it has already been given, a kind of a rhetoric question: "You are going? But you said you were staying." "I like eating snails? Did you say such a thing? The hell I do." "She said that? Don't believe a word of it." "You do like them? I thought you didn't." "You are my friend? Are you sure?" Of course, the intonation changes. Also, it is difficult to differentiate between who (sbj)and who(m) (obj), and which (subj) and which (obj). Make a video on that. (b) when "who/which" is the subject of the verb: "Who is coming tomorrow?" "Which pens are yours?" Adverbs and adverbial phrases: that's what you call "Additional Information". These are words or combinations of words which each answers one of the following questions: where? how? when? Those answering the When can also go to the beginning of the sentence followed by a comma: "I went TO LONDON/ BY TRAIN/ YESTERDAY." "LAST MONTH, nobody knew me at school. NOW, everybody does." "SOMETIMES, I feel like kicking myself." Comment: Your level of speech should match the level of English your viewers have. In this video, if one could understand you, they most likely have already been taught inversion in questions for five consecutive years at school. Your accent is perfect for a foreign student. Comment 2: Even if not blonde, you are still the prettiest thing in this universe - and I suspect the next too. Who am I? A Greek 70-year-old ex-teacher of English as a Foreign Language and now a pensioner. The above comment 2 was given with all good intentions as I am deeply religious. You do look like a beautiful flower. And very decent too.

The question was *Can I use your car tonight* , and my answer was "Would you mind if, I use your car tonight". So ma'am what I would like to ask was was my answer correct if not, could you please tell me why. Thank you in advance and I am looking forward to your response.

@mmmEnglish_Emma3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tella! How our message is received in English (respectfully, politely, aggressively rudely) often has more to do with our delivery of the message that the words themselves. Would you mind if I .. and Could I please.. are both polite, particularly when delivered in a polite tone. A less polite way to express these would be.. "Phone, thanks.. " or "Give me your phone.."

Hello teacher Emma, subtitles that appear word after word, instead of appearing the whole sentence at once before you speak, are not convenient because it does not give us time to think.
