attending to Toyota, you have to unlock the system before tightening or loosing the main bolt. Otherwise you can get the vvt valve damaged.

If the camshaft is off the engine and you put the wrench on the camshaft and the other key on the central screw, you apply force on that conical pin only if you apply force on the sprocket (like was the case in this video). If you isolate the sprocket, and apply force only on the camshaft that is put onto something like wood or rubber, my oppinion is that you won't damage the pin valve. +Peter Finn I have an 1.4 l vvti corolla that has a strange knocking sound comming from the vvti system in idle rotational speed only. What is your oppinion? It's 100% the valve pin damaged? If it is, how serios is this problem? Can the engine run with this problem for a long period? It has now 140000 km. Thank you.

I love your videos. They're actually what we call jua Kali in Kenya and excellent for learning new skills and mechanical concepts. However I have question about vvti system; what would happen if one did not insert the spring in the sprocket gear? Any danger or how would the car behave?

I changed the vvti system and since the car has been having check engine light on. I have tried different vvti system but persistent with error code 1439. I changed the vvti solenoid and camshaft position sensor,redone the timing and changed the timing chain but has not been successful. The car has not misfire, starts normally,power normal. I change ECM Nothing changed. The check engine light lights on only after warming up and car driven about 4 miles. Otherwise at idling even after engine warming up it doesn't light What could be amis.

Yup I read you have to unlock system before you take out center bolt.And has to be unlocked when before tighten center bolt.Then you turn to lock. There is more videos on how to unlock system

Yes! Unlock VVTi gear before tightening the center bolt to its full torque and ensure the VVTi gear moves smoothly within its range when you rotate to and fro before it locks.

Glad I came across this. I have to take mine apart to clean it because it came from an burnt out engine running without oil before blowing a rod, I have the head tested, rectified and washed at the machine shop together with all the rest of its parts but this one came clean on the outside from the hot bath with the solvent but I still can see chunks of oils and couple holes clogged on the shaft so need to take it apart to clean good an assemble again; maybe the engine burnt in the first place because the oil in here was burnt and poor oil circulation kept contributing to the total demise?

Hello Mr.Peter, What is the cause of a new vvti cam rattle at start up? And please how can I make it go away? I put on new timing chain, new exhaust an intake cams, new timing chain guides, new timing chain tensioner, new vvt actuators exhaust an intake and all new orings and seals on timing chain cover. And this is on a 2010 Toyota Corolla 1.8l LE. Thanks your videos are Great!!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi, maybe your engine valves needs adjusting? Too big valve tolerance.

peter finn. hi.. im installing the cam shafts n the sprockets poits don't match.. (the ex with the intake) am i supposed to install it unlocked and then lock it or leave it unlocked?????

confuses the crap out of me as, pete! journeyman shade tree guy here. i accidentally posted on your timing chain vid. i guess all i'm wondering about is if it's for sure okay if (a) all surfaces mate cleanly and (b) the mechanic is SURE he has the (extended out) pin in the proper slot. torked bolt to 40 cleanly. all i'm worried about is if whether i'm screwing up installing it in the "locked" position. sorry for the density between my ears lol

Hi Peter. In this video you show us how working first vvt-i coupling. Can you show us how working second vvt-i coupling? Maybe this second coupling too have valve for fixing? How it working?

If I have a VVT-I rattle because of a faulty gear, can I just change the VVT-i gear from the camshaft instead of disassembling it like you did? Is the big screw the only thing holding it on to the camshaft?

Yes, you can only replace.

In your experience is it the intake or exhaust vvtis that go bad? I read the intake vvtis sometimes become faulty and fail to close an oil valve when the car shuts down. Because of this the gears rattle because they don't have oil.

Hi peter, I hope you see this message. I am rebuilding my son’s Camry engine but this camshaft gear leaks oil and when I install the timing and every mark matches and I turn the shaft a few turns this camshaft gear clicks and the engine goes off timing and after I turn the engine 5 times by hand it won’t turn anymore because the timing is bad. Please help me, what is wrong here?

Peter Finn the Car Doctor // Hi Peter , thank you sooooo much and god bless you because we are stuck. I have watched 100s of videos but yours is the best so we are rebuilding this engine base on your videos and so far it has been great till we hit this problem and now we are stuck The engine is a 2.4 L engine . I installed the timing chain based on your video and the marks on the chain matched the marks on the head and then as you said my son turned the engine twice while I was holding the tensioner ( the one which has one screw) and as he turned the engine the tensioner felt like it hit a bump on the road two or three times and after we turned the engine twice the timing marks on the chain didn’t match the marks on the sprocket and after 5 times the engine wouldn’t turn. Also I think that the oil leak is from the camshafts itself where the cam cap bearing is because it has oil on both sides of the camshaft cap with the bearings. when I took the cam out there was a small puddle of oil on the bearing. My son said that we didn’t buy a car, we bought a teacher. Me and my son truly appreciate you and your videos and doing this video because we are almost finished and all we have to do is instal this timing chain and put the covers on and install the engine . Also, after years of working on the engines We saw your hands and my son said “ my god look at his hands, it looks like a doctor’s hands . Ours look like a Mexican mechanic’s hands who opens the screws with his teeth.” He is right. 😂
