Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. I found a blind toad that looked like he escaped an attack from another animal. He is healing but won't eat because he is not sure what is touching him. I've raised many animals and nursed some back to health. Those are usually mammals or birds but amphibians are way different.

Instead of googling how long a toad can go without food, I instead made the rooky mistake of looking up stuff like this, (watched 3 different vids) as good as the vids are, I don't recall anyone saying how long a toad can go without food, if I'd have known they could go without food for about 2-3 weeks, I wouldn't have disturbed the little fella to try to assist feed him. I recently got 2 baby chubby frogs about a week ago. I’ve fed regularly (every other day) but I don’t see them eating any of the food. I’ve provided dried grasshoppers, dried and alive crickets, and dried mealworms and they haven’t taken any of it. I’m getting a little bit worried because they keep refusing food. I know it can be stress from a new environment and all of that but im just wondering how long will it take for them to finally eat something?
@BenjaminsExotics2 жыл бұрын
@Abbie Johnson, Almost all frogs are attracted to movement and won't accept dead insect feeders. Plus dried insects have greatly diminished nutritional value when compared to normal live feeders. I'd put in about two dozen appropriately sized crickets and count how many are left after a few days. Chubby Frogs are normally great eaters, but quite shy and don't really like to be watched at first.

@Holypikemanz2 жыл бұрын
@Benjamin's Exotics Captured some american toads, i think are both female (chin same color as belly, no chirping). One seems very stressed and doesnt leave the toad house I made for her, unless its night time and I have a blanket over the large bin I have them in (coir for ground). Is there a way to build comfort with the toads, other than time and being gentle with them? They are both eating and have easy access to filtered water. Is there some kind of entertainment or exercise for toads? like the toad version of a hamster wheel?
@jshparker28012 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I rescued an american toad too. Mine's a male. coconut coir is great, my toad seems to absolutely love it. Just make sure to keep it moist. I spray mine with a spray bottle every day (it's okay if you miss a day or two). One thing I've noticed is that they really want places to hide. Not just to burrow in the coir. If you can put some things like dry leaves, small branches, or things like that, it may help them feel more comfortable. Toads are pretty much the definition of chill. They don't do a whole lot, and they're not the most active animals. But my toad will sometimes go into what I call his 'hunter mode', when he'll see a mealworm that's crawling away and his vision is locked onto it, and he'll bend down and stalk it, wait for the right time and position, then strike. lol. It's pretty cute, imo. He also seems to love crickets. I personally don't enjoy crickets... But yeah, if you have an enclosure where the crickets won't escape, that might get your toads excited, possibly. Yeah... As far as 'entertainment' goes, I really think just having enough hiding places, and giving them varied food options is pretty much all they could ever ask for. :) good luck!
@Holypikemanz2 жыл бұрын
@@jshparker2801 was going to order them each a male counterpart, ive got an american toad and a southern toad, females as I said. I guess online businesses dont ship in the winter (oct-january?) time because it might hurt the animal? local pet stores dont have any of the that type. I made them a little swimming pool (not too deep) and two soap dishes with filtered water, 4 upside down flower pots with an entrance hole burned into them.
@wolf-kissedrosie692 жыл бұрын
My toad is a lot smaller than that. I have an American toadlet and the only thing Roach will is are ants. The ants are really easy to collect in my yard thanks to my dogs bone, and Roach will eat them on their own but I'm worried because winter is coming soon and I'll have to switch to buying the food. I have heard that Pinhead crickets and wingless fruit flies are really small but I don't wanna get them if Roach won't eat them. I feed Roach every other day or every 2 days and they eat all the ants I provide. Little piggy. I have tried other bugs that were Roach's size and Roach should have been able to eat but Roach either ignores them or tries for them and then spits them out. Like baby pill bugs. Spits them right out. I've never had such a picky American toad before. Is it because of Roach being small? Roach is going on their first winter I believe. It was originally a wild toad and I caught it a few weeks ago. I will probably need to force feed it eventually. At least until it's a lot bigger.
@BenjaminsExotics2 жыл бұрын
@Wolf-Kissed (Rosie), If he/she is consistently eating smaller prey items then I would not suggest assist feeding, which is mainly for frogs that refuse to feed entirely. It may be that the pill bugs or other feeders you have tried are too large, as American Toads normally love pill bugs, beetles, worms, ants, centipedes, and all sorts of other small invertebrates that are common in your area.
@barryturner2802 Жыл бұрын
Hi what do you do if after you do all that and it just keeps spitting it out

@Tingles From Pringles, Distilled water is not a good source for frogs and may be what is causing this problem if you are using it exclusively. Treated tap water or spring water work best 90% of the time. If your WTF is captive bred and lives in a proper clean environment it is unlikely that the problem is a fungal infection.

@Benjamin's Exotics rewatched this video to finally get toad mouth access. The part i was missing was aiming the non sharp syringe at underneath their top jaw and letting them relax after a few seconds and stop bracing their jaw, so then mouth access got much easier. I gave my little toad who is having gas and poor eating, first yesterday some fendbenazole, then today some small calcium powder in water, since I hadnt been the best with keeping track on how much "dusted" cricket he was getting. @Jake Miller, What species of frog are you trying this technique on?

Anyone know how long a tree frog can go without eating?? , found a injured tree frog blind both eyes are not there "( and lost a froggy foot .. to my Suprise he is still alive 3 weeks later , i bought meal worms and now small crickets. but not sure he~s eaten anything. can they eat without seeing? froggy sense's? anyone?

@Lanni, It all depends on the species and age of the frog. Some species like adult American Green Tree Frogs can potentially go months without food and still survive.

surprised to see toads need assist feeding as well , guess it happen to all genus

@ sdq sdq, Yes normally most Toad species are great eaters, but you do get a few here and there than can be a pain to feed.

Bro just saved my toad that hadn't ate in 2 days-

I hadn't got the stuff for it since, I just rescued it because it was caught and injured on its left eye, so I had to do this procedure carefully and it worked!!

@@BenjaminsExotics just saying saw only a toad....not dumb I've had both and they are similar in ways. Also never had this issue. Just stumbled upon your vid. As I've raised tadpoles to toads and frogs....I like frogs more
@BenjaminsExotics2 жыл бұрын
@@91talonboostbuddy The same assist feeding method shown in this video will apply to most species of frogs and toads. Generally this technique is only necessary for adult wild caught individuals, and is very rarely ever needed in either captive raised or captive bred specimens that are kept properly.

Toads are actually frogs 🐸
@91talonboostbuddy2 жыл бұрын
@@dianaross2070 hmm so toads stay in water like frogs? Toads breathe through thier skin and lungs? Toads live on land and don't need water like a frog does. If a frog gets to far from its water source it dries and dies
